Giorgia Bronzini timed her sprint to perfection to edge out Marianne Vos in the RideLondon Grand Prix.
The women’s criterium showcase was ridden at a furious pace with countless attacks adding up to an exciting race in the capital with the two-time world champion emerging victorious.
Bronzini (Wiggle-Honda), who travels directly from the finish of the race to the start of Sunday’s Route de France, made up for a disappointing race on the same roads during the 2012 Olympic Games with an impressive turn of speed.
Reigning world champion Vos (Rabobank-Liv) was highly active during the race and hit out early in the sprint on the iconic run up The Mall. The end result saw Bronzini sneak around the Dutch rider to take the win.
Lizzie Armitstead was the lone entrant of her Boels-Dolmans team and was forced to shut down breaks on the way to third place in front of a home crowd. The newly crowned Commonwealth road race champion attacked multiple times as the big names set about breaking down the sizeable 100-rider field.
Brit pair Eileen Roe and defending champion Laura Trott rounded out the top five on the day. Team-mate of Bronzini and Trott, Amy Roberts, saw her last lap attack reeled in on the famous finishing straight as the race was settled in an exciting sprint.
