Nairo Quintana has abandoned the Vuelta a Espana after crashing for the second day in succession.
Less than 24 hours on from a spectacular fall during stage ten’s individual time trial, the Movistar rider crashed again around 20km into Wednesday's 11th stage.
The 24-year-old Colombian was brought down in a pile-up in the peloton and subsequent X-rays at a hospital in Pamplona showed he had suffered a fracture to his right shoulder blade.
Movistar tweeted: "Confirmation: @NairoQuinCo has suffered a displaced fracture in his right-hand scapula, will undergo surgery on Thursday (10am)."
Quintana had been the pre-race favourite for overall victory and led the general classification after nine stages. However, his crash on stage ten saw him drop to 11th overall, 3min 25sec off leader Alberto Contador.
Maxime Bouet (Ag2r-La Mondiale), Steve Morabito (BMC Racing) and Thibaut Pinot (FDJ.fr) also abandoned the Vuelta on stage 11.
