Inside insight

Team Sky sports director Dario Cioni gives his analysis of the route... First week
It's very important that in the first week that you don't make any mistakes. There are quite a few stages that could make you lose a bit of time. We actually think we might have two or three days of wind - so why not try to take advantage? Like with the team time trial, the goal would be to give Chris Froome some seconds' advantage before we hit the mountains. Second week
For the GC, the first week will be don't make mistakes where you could lose time, but the second week is where you need to be really good. You have got the individual time trial and then three consecutive mountain-top finishes. In the second week, the GC is going to be decided. It is probably the hardest block of all these three weeks. Third week
The final week, up in Galicia, again you still need good legs for the last mountain-top finish on the Saturday, but the other stages will be more about breakaways. If someone is struggling, they will look to the Saturday to gain some time back, but if everyone is happy with where they are at, it could be a quite controlled last few days of racing. Stage one's team time trial
With the team time trial straight away, we have an opportunity to give Chris a head start. We have got a strong team here, so why not aim to have a fast start and get a good result for the team? And a good result is going to be to try and win the stage. The stage 10 individual time trial
It's not a pure time trial, but you can divide it into three sectors. The first sector is 12km uphill and that is where Quintana, Rodriguez and Uran will try not to lose too much time. Then there's a more rolling, technical sector, where Chris can make a big difference. The last part is really fast going in - and that's another sector in favour of Chris. So overall, Chris must have the goal of putting in some time between himself and the others. How much that time is going to be is hard to say because it depends on how he's climbing and how the others are climbing. But, for sure, it's one of the stages where we look at gaining time on the opponents. Dario Cioni was speaking to Peter Smith

Key stages

Stage 10: The longest of the two individual time trials has plenty of potential to create significant gaps between the general classification contenders.
Stage 14: Although not the first summit finish of the race, the climb to La Camperona is the hardest so far and could well eliminate from contention any rider not in peak condition.
Stage 16: The last of three successive summit finishes has a tough final few kilometres and could well decide who wears the red jersey heading into the final week.
