The favourites

Men's road race Simon Gerrans: The Australian is in form after back-to-back wins at the GPs Quebec and Montreal last weekend, and the course suits him perfectly. Bookmakers' favourite.
Peter Sagan: The Slovakian should be able to get over the hills and the flat finish suits his style. Likely to be in the mix at the end.
Fabian Cancellara: The Swiss has opted out of the individual time trial to focus on the road race, which he would be unlikely to do if he didn't think he could win.
Alejandro Valverde: Third last year, the Spaniard will have no problems getting over the climbs and has a fast finish, but will need to make the race hard and drop the sprinters. Decent outside bets: Tony Gallopin, Alexander Kristoff, Vincenzo Nibali, Ben Swift. Women's road race Marianne Vos: The all-conquering Dutch rider is bidding for a third consecutive world road race title and will once again the woman to beat.
Lizzie Armitstead: The Briton is well suited to the course but it is just a question of whether she will be able to maintain her form after a long season.
Emma Johansson: Silver behind Vos last year, the talented Swede will be keen to go one better this time around. Men's elite time trial Tony Martin: The German has won the title for the last three years in succession and is favourite to make it four. He has won seven time trials this year, including one at the recent Vuelta a Espana, so has form.
Sir Bradley Wiggins: The world time trial title is one of the few accolades missing from Wiggins's palmares and this year could well be his last chance to claim it. Looks to have decent form.
Tom Dumoulin: The 23-year-old Dutchman is an up-and-coming force in time-trialling. Finished second behind Martin at the time trial in the Tour de France. Women's elite time trial Ellen van Dijk: The reigning champion from the Netherlands will once again be the rider to beat.
Linda Villumsen: The New Zealander won the Commonwealth title in July and will be keen to add the world title to her collection.
