Highlights from Thursday at the World Grand Prix

Van Gerwen and Suljovic might be the players who have impressed the most but, in a tournament full of shocks, will realise that their next opponents pose a significant threat.

Checking out on 160 to complete a 3-0 thrashing over Jamie Lewis on Thursday night, Van Gerwen has rarely looked troubled in Ireland despite the eliminations of his rivals Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis and co.

In Webster, he'll play a contender who proved his mettle in the last round by edging a nervy final set to beat Jelle Klaasen, having earlier conceded a 2-0 lead. Webster will need every bit of that fighting quality if he is to cope with darts' greatest thrower.

Suljovic, a long-time contender who may look back on this tournament as his rebirth as a top challenger, will aim to replicate Thursday's stunning finish against Thornton.

Against Vincent van der Voort, the Austrian finished the job with a stylish 170 checkout and while he has received great credit for his week in Dublin, Thornton has gone about his work quietly.

Thornton averaged 90 and hit 50 per cent of his doubles as he beat Ian White and the seventh seed will see Suljovic as a beatable target to win a place in the final.
