Michael van Gerwen retained the Gibraltar Darts Trophy after a convincing 6-2 win over Dave Chisnall in the final.

The world No 1 had earlier survived a scare in his quarter-final victory over Gibraltar's Dyson Parody but was rarely troubled by Chisnall, reeling off four legs in a row to claim his third successive PDC European Tour title this year.

Van Gerwen started the final with checkouts of 82 and 107 to forge a 2-0 lead, sparking a brief fight back from Chisnall, who levelled with a 13-dart finish and 124 on the bull.

'Mighty Mike' swiftly regained the lead with an 11-darter and then added finishes of 106 and 124 before securing victory and the £25,000 top prize.

But Van Gerwen had been pushed to the brink of defeat in the quarters by Parody, who landed seven 180s but paid the price for three missed match darts as the reigning champion won 6-5.
