Hendriks, 18, is appearing for the first time in the event at Frimley Green and ensured it was a debut to remember as he held his nerve to secure a memorable 3-2 victory.
The Dutch youngster went 1-0 and 2-1 ahead only to be twice pegged back by his experienced opponent, but Adams' frailty on the doubles ultimately cost him in the decider as Hendriks recorded the biggest win of his fledgling career.
Defeat for Adams means that there will be a new name on the trophy this year with all previous champions, including last year's winner Christian Kist, having been knocked out.
The tournament's top seed, Stephen Bunting, progressed to round two following a hard-fought 3-2 triumph over Jamie Wilson.
Despite taking the opening set, Bunting found himself 2-1 down as Wilson hit back in impressive fashion.
But the Liverpudlian kept his composure and, having levelled, eventually hit double-one when it mattered to set up a second round clash with Darryl Fitton.
Steve Douglas is also through to the next round as he beat Scotland's Gary Stone 3-1 and will now take on Tony O'Shea.
In the evening session there were opening round wins for England's Scott Mitchell and Dutch duo Jan Dekker and Wesley Harms.
Bournemouth player Mitchell won his first ever match at the event after edging out Scottish opponent Mark Marilli 3-2, while Dekker produced a 150 checkout - the highest of the Championship to-date - on his way to victory via the same scoreline against fellow Dutchman Jeffrey de Graaf.
In the final match Harms, who reached the semi-finals 12 months ago, overcame excitable Norwegian debutant Rune David 3-1.
