Bobby George made the final on his debut, and his 23-year-old son could repeat the trick if he can beat Scott Waites and win a place in the Lakeside final on his first appearance in the event.
George slipped 3-1 behind against Dekker after the Dutchman won nine legs out of 11, but George responded with a run of form of his own as six legs out of seven tied it up at 3-3.
George then led 4-3 before a ding-dong battle went back Dekker's way as he forced a final set, but the man from Essex hit the shots just when needed to make it into the last four.
"I played well when I had to play well," said George. "And when I didn't have to play well I played terrible. I took the finishes out when I had to but again when I wasn't playing well I was terrible.
"Jan played well, he played similar to me and played well at times and I just had that little bit of luck and when I had my shots I took them.
"I'm happy to have made the semi-finals, but all I wanted to do was come here and play my best darts and I've still not done that yet, so hopefully in the next round."
Waites also made the semi-finals for the first time after he survived a bit of a wobble to beat Paul Jennings 5-2, after leading 4-0 at one stage but taking his foot off the gas.
In the women's event, reigning champion Anastasia Dobromyslova came from a set down to beat Trina Gulliver in the semi-final and she will now face Lisa Ashton as the Russian bids for a third world title.
