Danny Cipriani

Cipriani: answering Ashton's call

If you criticise Jonny Wilkinson you're seen as a heretic, but any regular rugby watcher would have to say that his omission from the England side to play Ireland was almost inevitable.

If you compare Danny Cipriani's recent performances with Wilkinson's lame displays then there was only one choice Brian Ashton should have made. Belatedly, he has made it.

Against Scotland, a schoolboy could have done better than Wilkinson with his positional kicking - never his best attribute, despite a phenomenal place-kicking record - and, despite a back-line featuring the likes of Paul Sackey and Lesley Vainikolo, we never asked the opposition any questions.

Not until Charlie Hodgson came on with 10 minutes left did we see a fly-half take the ball flat and get us over the gain line. In the modern game, if you stand deep and fail to deliver on your kicking, then you're out of the team. That's what has happened.

People will say: 'Wilkinson's the world-record points-holder'. I don't care about that. You have to select according to form, not reputation, and all I care about is watching an attractive England. At the moment...well...I can't say the words I want to use to describe them, and I would have been embarrassed to collect my wages after the nature of the defeat to Scotland.

Spark

You need a No 10 who has pace, who can have a go and spark a backline, and this guy Cipriani has been doing it week in-week out for Wasps.

He should have been in from the start and told he had five or six games to prove himself. It didn't happen after the World Cup, but it has happened now and he has to be given a run in the side.

There will be pressure on the 20-year-old - for the right or wrong reasons he has a profile almost as high as Wilkinson's already - but I think he will cope with it.

People say Cipriani is arrogant, but I don't care how arrogant he is as long as we have four or five tries to talk about on Saturday - regardless of the result.

And let's be clear, this is about the performance and not the result. We were led to believe after the World Cup that Brian Ashton would pursue a more performance-led agenda; that he would bring in new blood and aim to build a team for the 2011 World Cup.

He hasn't done that, and Brian and his coaches only have themselves to blame for the pressure they now find themselves under. I hope for Brian's sake he is given another go, but he has to take recent events as a kick up the backside, loosen up and be true to himself.

The England coaching team have been so obsessed with results and with smashing the opposition at the set-piece. It may have worked against a France side playing suicidal rugby, but ultimately it's come back to bite Brian on the backside.

One thing's for sure - the fans who trudged up to Murrayfield and will be there again at Twickenham on Sunday will not accept just a scrappy 12-9 win. I know because I get to hear their complaints every time I walk through the west car park at HQ.

Exhilarating

It has to be an exhilarating performance of free-flowing rugby, and I know we'll see that from Cipriani. He won't be standing back in the pocket, he'll be trying to make things happen. And if he makes a few mistakes, so what?

The England coaches have waited until the 11th hour to change things, and even then there are three or four others who can count themselves lucky still to be in the team.

Brian knows my views. I wouldn't have too much problem with the back-line because they're young and sparky, and having Cipriani at fly-half has to bring out something in them.

But you rely on the forwards to win you the ball, and there are other combinations he could have used. I would have Matt Stevens at tight head - Phil Vickery was made captain not on the basis of form, but because he was good to Brian at the World Cup.

Simon Shaw and Nick Easter are honest players, but there are better second-rows than Shaw. James Haskell should be starting - not on the bench.

Brian has probably taken the approach that this is the last throw of the dice and said to the players: 'I've stuck with you, now go out and stop my head rolling and your own heads rolling.'

If they don't perform against Ireland, it could be the last time some of these players pull on an England shirt.

I am not a big rugby fan and this is why i am probably saying this but just remember the last 2 world cups. we have been in both finalswith jonny in both and winning one for us. compare that to football and then you'll realise the football team is in a bigger crisis than the rugby team lets look for the positives rather than all the negatives i.e. the win against france on their own turf. I know there isnt many but if we higlighted these more maybe this would raise morale and in turn the performances of players in the team i.e Jonny. Why xant we accomodate both players. Even if Jonny is playing very well he is a leader who will motivate the younger inexperienced playes. Also, the team were obviously motivated to beat france but why not in other games like the Scotland match, surely it is Brian Ashtons job to do this and although he is doing a better job than past coaches, is he really the right man for the job, he doesn't seem very passionate and although he should stay calm he could show some emotion to prove that he really cares.

I feel Johnny has been used as a scapegoat for what was a dreadful performance from the whole of the squad. Surely this would have been the time to blood all the younger players who will be Englands' future. I still feel Johnny is a part of the future and should be made skipper with the likes of Cipriani, flood, Allen, stevens, Hartley etc being part of the squad. If anyone should go it should be Brian Ashton, he must develop the game plan and tell themwhat he wants them to do, correct??

Cipriani has class but I worry about the lack of experience at 9 and 12 and fear he could be in for a rough ride. I'd have either barkley or flutey at 12. The latter would bring the club partnership that has blazed a trail for wasps this season. What has Tait done wrong? The so called future of english rugby is the unofficial bench warmer? Did anyone else see the worldcup he has flare, unadulterated pace and one of few centres in world rugby that has kept Mortlock quiet for 80mins of rugby. As for management Jake White as head honcho with Dean Ryan and Shaun Edwards as forwards/defence coasts respectively, no messing just a winning mentality.

Wilkinson should be at 10. Simple as that! He has carried our team on enough occasions and it's the pathetic pack that we have nowardays, with so much slow and turned over ball that is causing the problems for Johnny and the rest of the three-quarter line. Admittedly, Johnny has had a few poor games, by his standards, in this 6 nations, but is only 28 and is the lifeblood of the team. Have you seen the Aussies dropping Ricky Ponting when he can't buy a run recently? I don't think so! Don't hold your breath over Cipriani! Wait until we're in a world cup semi-final and 3 points behind with 10 to go......and see if he drags us into the final single-handedly! I doubt it... There are lots of players who look great in the decidedly average Guiness Premiership. We saw how good he is when he came on against Italy and immediately gave a try away! Bring back Johnny.....

I agree with Dewi in the calls for more changes. Although not just in the pack. Outside Wilkinson there was a clear lack of direction. The Balshaw question is old and tired now, but still why is he still in the team? This is not 2001, he doesn't provide any real attacking flair and at 15 you are just waiting for him to make costly mistakes. Also Noon, defensively he is immense, but how much does he offer when we go forward? If there was ever a time to bring in young talent on form this is it. I think England has the players and potential, the real trouble is that the top.

I am very glad that Brian Ashton has seen sense and selected Cipriani. England is in danger of flirting with an emotional love affair with certain players, including Jonny. If we are to stand any chance of competing against any side and building towards the next two world cups, there needs to be some serious spring cleaning. I do see Jonny bing involved in the World Cup in New Zealand, but in the same capacity that Mike Catt was used in 2003. Why not have a fit Ryan Lamb at fly half, Shane Geraghty and inside center, Toby Flood at outside, Sackey and Simpson-Daniel on the wings and Tait at full back. A potentially very exciting, pacey and imaginitive set of backs. As for the forwards, they have been playing well with some very solid scrummaging. It would be nice to see Matt Stevens starting with Mears and Sheridan. It has been unfortunate that injury has kept out Tom Rees, James Forrester and James Haskell. But what about the likes of Andy Hazell? Ring in the changes before English rugby stagnates and starts to necrose.

i don't think that when charlie hodgson came on he got over the gain line immensly he played very much the same game as jonny did jonny didn't have a good game we all have off days and he was not on top for but if he wasn't the best fly half in the world he would not have the record for points i agree at some point he will have to step down to upcoming talent such as danny cipriani although he is only 28 and has barely reached his prime without Jonny we would not have reached the world cup final. His dropping is out of order

cipriani is ok but he needs support. in football you'd never say 'we need to score goals' and then pick the strikers of a team wallowing in the depths of the prem. a tream who doesnt score many goals... cipriani is inspirational and works best with pace alongside - flood is a disaster and is lucky to stay in after being found out in all the games. can't wait for geraghty to be fit - and barkley the form inside centre in the prem should be playing - law case pending, whatever. he's not in jail yet.. do we want to win? through cipriani in with no support - hmm, nice. lets chuck ashton as a first, failed with ireland failed with england. cant make the grade
