Montgomerie: embarrassing
Ross of course will get over the incident and he will continue his chosen career as before. But what of Monty? His behaviour was beyond an apology. He let the game down badly.

Quotes of the week
It's always difficult to know how an event will go when it moves to a new venue, especially after 13 very successful years at the K Club. There was no need to worry however, as the European Open at the London Club was outstanding.
The European Tour's generous offer of free admission on Thursday was hugely popular and 23,800 descended on the course designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1994.
Ross Fisher's win was thrilling. His golf over the four days when he led from start to finish was exemplary and no player could have lived with the quality he produced. On Sunday, a tough golfing day with a strong breeze and rain, he hit 16 greens in regulation and no-one really got close.
Sergio Garcia is now producing the type of golf we always knew he was capable of. His pitching, approach work and chipping was so inventive, he restricted himself to just 21 putts in a best of the day final round of 66. I enjoyed his comment at the end when asked about his putting: "Now I know how Tiger feels every day on the greens".
An in-form Garcia, armed with a new putting confidence must surely be a factor at Royal Birkdale next week
And then there was South African David Frost. Forty-nine in a few weeks time, David rolled back the years with a vintage display of shot-making to take fourth place and a cheque for £120,000. On air, I thought it might be the biggest cheque of his career, but the $300,000 he won at Colonial beat Sunday's effort.
It must be said that he won the Million Dollar at Sun City three times, but that did not form part of either the European Tour or the PGA Tour. Nevertheless, it books David's passage in Europe next year as he waits until he is eligible for his new career as a senior. It will ensure he remains competitive.
Graeme McDowell earned valuable Ryder Cup points with a polished performance, but there was still no sign of top form from Ian Poulter and Justin Rose. Fortunately for them, there is still time to force their way into Nick's Ryder Cup team.
Your response to last week's column was immense and most of you agreed that the on-course behaviour of Colin Montgomerie was below the standard we expect in our sport. Little did I know what would happen on Friday at the London Club.
Having made an error at the short par four 13th to find water, what followed was the most embarrassing few minutes I have witnessed on a golf course.
Ross, our sound technician, was doing his job 40 yards away from Colin's third shot, ie, pointing the sound recorder in Monty's direction so you can hear the sound of the ball being struck through your TV sets.
Monty backed off and said to Ross: "Do you have a problem here?". The reply came: "No problem at all". What followed was the most sickening minute I have experienced on a golf course. The Scot replied: "You're here because of me ok, remember that".
If I had said that and my late professional golfer father was listening, it would have been at least a month before I could sit comfortably without any pain.
Ross is like you and I and he does his job professionally, as he has done for many years. His job pays his mortgage, no easy task in these tough times. Ross is fortunate. He not only enjoys his job, he loves the game of golf too. It was no surprise that when I saw him after the programme finished, he was a little hurt, even shell-shocked.
Ross of course will get over the incident and he will continue his chosen career as before. But what of Monty? His behaviour was beyond an apology. He let the game down badly. He let the European Tour down, as well as his friends, family, admirers, supporters, sponsors, and fellow professionals.
I know you read this column, Colin, and I'm sorry I have to write these words, but let me tell you, nobody is as important as you thought you were. Nobody.
On a brighter note, I was glad to see Rebecca Hudson win for the second time in three weeks. Her win at the Oxfordshire was "Ross Fisher-like". A final round 64 gave her victory in her homeland for the first time as a professional.
Rebecca has taken time to find her feet in the professional ranks after a glittering amateur career, but she now has the confidence and belief to take her game to the next level. With the next Ladies major at Sunningdale in just under a month, her time may well arrive over the famous old course.
The next two weeks are huge in terms of the shaping of the Ryder Cup side. Both tables, the European points list and the World Ranking list could see dramatic changes after Loch Lomond and Royal Birkdale.
For those who play below their best during that fortnight, they can look forward to the first two weeks of August when the world golf championships get underway again and that is followed by the year's final major.
The BBC will take care of the home events this year, while Sky Sports gets ready for a hectic end to the season. From the beginning of August, all of the top golf will be across our screens and the Jewel in the Crown will be Faldo v Azinger, USA v Europe from Valhalla, Louisville, Kentucky in September.
That extravaganza is now just 10 weeks away...

I was at the K club for Wednesday's practice day before last Ryder Cup - Monty was jovial, loving the attention. A lady heckled him and he invited her to come and play the shot for him - she took him up on it, he gave her one of his clubs, she hit the ball and was rewarded with the ball and a kiss - that was great to see, the Monty we would love to see all the time, instead of the sullen-faced grumpy, bad tempered version.

Whilst I agree Monty has been a great golfer over the years - I think the man is now a has been who seems to think that we owe him something. His record is out of this world although NEVER won a major, but that could be down to his whole attitude on course and the fact he thinks he is something he is not. He should take stock of where he now sits in the game - a long way behind the new breed - and enjoy his later years toherwise I feel he may end up a miserable ex golfer who nobody remebers for the good things he has done !!

Ewen, you have absolutely nothing to apologise about. I've just seen the footage for myself and even by Monty's standards with on-course behaviour, this is a stinker. He deserves all the critisism he gets as his arrogant, big-headed and downright rude attitude needs stamping out. Yes I wish he would have won a major by now to compliment his talent, but is this a good impression to give to the youngsters coming into the game? I think not - sort it out Monty, you make me cringe every time you 'blow up'. It definitely isn't too late to change your ways.

Monty, the jekyl & hyde of golf. He is not the only pro golfer to throw tantrums and be exceptionally rude on the course. Indeed some remain so off it as well. To be fair Monty nearly always recovers himself 15 minutes after he has finished. But, but, that does not excuse his behaviour. Golf even more than cricket and yes snooker, prides itself on manners during the game, and usually those three sports punish or at least reprimand behaviour below required standards. Sadly maybe Monty has never felt the iron fist inside the velvet glove of its ruling body, as he has deserved to. Why not ? I leave that with you. Lastly, some are motivated by bad manners, which I do not condone. They use them to up their performance (MacEnroe for example), but they do not improve Monty's game, so Colin, be a physician and examine thyself and STOP IT Please.

I recently had the fortune to watch Montie at the Telus World Skins inVernon, BC. He was a joy for the two days I watched him, interacting with the crowd brilliantly; head and shoulders above Couples, Norman and Wier. The highlight was losing a bet to one of the Amateurs in his group on who cold get closer from a similarly difficult chip and then reaching in his pocket for $10, great fun or all. Such a shame he has to do these other things.

Monty has to be the finest golfer we have produced behind Faldo in the last 30 years. If you wanted somebody to hole a putt to win the Ryder Cup, Monty would be your man, even this year. But his growling and seeming animosity to the gallerys in all competitions has to stop. He is holding himself up to ridicule and bringing a great game into disrepute. When we watch him we now know exactly what to expect, a bad shot is followed by a glare and or comment directed towards a poor soul who`s only crime is to pay a lot of money to watch a professional doing what we all wish we could do. Every golfer hits a bad shot, even Tiger. Monty, please, take each shot as it comes, good or bad. I for one want you at the Ryder cup this year. To paraphrase the words of Kipling, "Show us you can treat triumph and disaster just the same then you`ll be a man my son."

I did not hear about Montys outburst last week but why doesn't it surprise me. I am a great supporter of Colin but he has to be the most frustrating player I have ever watched. Over the years I have willed him to win only to be left exasperated when he inevitably blows up!! I agree with you he does seem to be a nice guy off the course but when things do not go his way on the course the red mist descends and he gets a torn face ( to quote a scottish saying). Clubs get thrown and he stomps around the place but the one thing that really annoys me is when he walks off the green to the next tee before his playing partner has holed out. That is poor, you would not do that in a Saturday medal never mind a professional tournament! After viewing todays round at loch lomond there were times when that Mr Hyde side of his character shone through. Lets hope tomorrows round is a bit better or old Mr happy will come out again!!

as a scot i have always hoped that colin montgomerie would realise his dream and win a major. this latest story is in my view a bit of a storm in a teacup. the facts of the matter are that for colin's entire career he has had some form of bottle problem at the highest level. anyone who waxes lyrical about his or her opponents in the manner he has done over the last 7/8 years is clearly showing a lack of belief somewhere. whether we like it or not, great britains greatest golfer still remains nick faldo. then gent sandy lyle can claim to have achieved more than colin montgomerie. lyle went about his business in a manner that everyone respected, i cant say the same now for colin montgomerie. there is a saying that colin has a face like a bulldog eating a thistle, it says it all really.

Monty (Mrs Doubtfire) your comment " Your'e only here because of me" , you should say that to yourself, you are only here because of us, the fans, who pay entrance fees to watch a overpaid, arrogant, spoilt, so called 'proffesional' golfer. Well done Ewan for speaking for us.

Ewan, I could not agree more with your commennts about Colin Montgomery. Colin should remember that a lot of the earnings he has picked up over the years is a direct result of people like me tuning into Sky sports coverage of great golfing events. Without the viewers Colin wouldn't be picking up the sums of money sky provides to the tour - Rember that Colin. On a brighter note. I have heard you compliment my golf club a number of times whilst commentating on Sky Sports. I am a member of Colville Park club in Motherwell (Stephen O'Hara home course). Over the last 5 years i have went from a first handicap of 14 down to 8. Work commitments prevent me from spending time getting it down further. So imagine my surprise when I got a hole in 1 at the 4th hole par 3 last week. This was on the same day Monty had his outburst at the sound technician. So it was a good day for me.

I am sorry but I have to ask when are people going to stop fawning over Monty and making excuses for the man's arrogance and rudeness on course. This is not the first instance and probably not the last. It must gall the other top european players that there ia always so much media attention to Monty even when he is no longer a top 50 player

I think we have missed the point here, Although nobody can question Montys ability, this is one incident out of hundreds that could be highlighted. His general attitude on a golf course is to say the least appalling, i notice how, in many cases when he is applauded for a good shot he rarely acknowledges the applause and remains dour and aloof. I remember many years ago i watched him and Padraig playing a practice round at Mount Juliet, also in attendance walking around with them was Renton Laidlaw, following a stunning shot to much applause, i clearly heard Monty scarcastically say to Laidlaw, its a nice feeling people applauding you for doing your day job. He needs to realise that he has immense wealth due to talent he was born with, in my opinion he has that wealth because of the people who buy expensive equipment, and services that he endorses, together with people who pay entry fees to watch him and contribute to Sky TV. All in all a fantastic golfer, however if he was my son i dont think i would be that proud of him.

Like most golfers I love what Monty has done for the game but would I ever support him again, NO!!! A couple of years ago i travelled to the Dubai Desert Classic, a dream I had held for a long time. Very easy to ge nearer the players as the crowds are very small, especially in the 1st few days. I followed Colin on the Thursday, there were 8 fans, just 8 following his group. On the tee Monty claimed he heard me rustling a bag -which he did not. He walked over, berated me very angrily and then kicked a bottle of water in my direction. I was so embarrassed I had to walk away. later in the day I met him having a stroll. His round had finished and I asked if he would sign an autograph. He did not even have the manners to say no, he just waved me away like a naughty boy. Ernie Els could make the time but not Colin. It took me a months wages for the trip of a lifetime and the autograph was for my son, now a very promising young golfer and a member of his County set up. I told him about Monty. Colin, if you read these please understand you should be a legend yet my son does not think so!! That should mean more to you than it ever will. You hurt me & you hurt my son that day

I would like Colin to read this. I watched Tiger in Dubai this year and as he was walking between holes i said thanks for coming to dubai, to which he replied " Thank you sir for coming to watch me in Dubai". Now thats a class act from the best, who the hell do you think you are.

Typical Monty ,it really is time he grew up and realised that the reason he has wealth and privilige is directly related to his sponsors Logo,s being seen guess where?Yes you got it ,on the telly. He would do well to remember the old adage to judge a man by the way he treats the small man not by the way he treats his equal.Time for you to remember something Colin "Manners Maketh The Man"

I live in Spain, and when the end of season event is held at valderarma i am lucky enough to work for sky sports as a spotter, this is when you are given a group to follow and report to the producer the score and whos shot it is next and if the ball is in trouble etc. There is about 12 of us that do this job every year and we look forward to it as it is a great week that is untill one of us gets given Monty to follow, then thers people trying to swap groups because you know you will get a look from him or a comment, a couple of years ago i got his group on the last day and know one wanted to swap,so off i go, to be fair nothing really happend untill the 17th a great par five were you can go for the green in two or lay up to be safe, monty being two shots behind went for it and hit the green only to see his ball spin back of the green and into the water,he ended up with a six and he was out of contention, I was positiond on the 18th tee next to a lovely new volvo that was there as a promotion ,as monty came through the crowds and on to the tee you could see his anger, but you could not guess what happened next? well he punched the bonet of the volvo so hard it left a big dent in it , i could not belive my eyes, there was a few comments from the crowd but he just got on with his tee shot.He is been agreat golfer but im sure if he had not got so wound up with people around him he would have one more tourenments and may be a major

Ewen, I think you and many others here have misinterpreted what Colin said. By "your only here because of me", he surely meant "me" as in a professional golfer and not "me" Colin Montgomerie. Not that I think his attitude is often acceptable, he was stating that the cameraman was there to film him the goler, not that the only reason the tv cameras were there was because that Colin Montgomerie was present. I think this is a big misunderstanding

Although I am a huge Monty fan because of what he has done for the sport and also because I still believe he has more to win, I must admit his behaviour is embarrassing. Recently he seems to be making every aspect of his game much more complicated than it needs to be, his putting for example. If he'd just step up and have enough confidence in himself to say thats were the ball goes and sink it. However he does appear to be rediscovering his form of old and is even beginning to threaten the leaderboard. Thats why it disappoints me to see him acting so rudely to staff and the spectators when everybody knows that he's really much better than that. I'm sure most people have heard the commentators occassionally reminding the viewers at home about how great of a "pleasure" it is to be in his company off the course, which is why it beggers belief that he acts in such a manner on the course. Despite his attitude I still think some people's reactions are well out of proportion. Who needs Monty?.....WE DO!!!! The man's record in th Ryder Cup is phenomanol and personally I think he is one of the very few european golfers that would have the americans worried about September. Also, lets not forget about his incredible ability on the course and just what he is capable of doing because when Monty finds his rhythm its obvious why 1000's of people still follow him around golf courses.......oh and MONTY FOR THE SCOTTISH OPEN!!

it is a disgrace that someone of the grace and knowlodge of the game such as ewan feels he has to explain hiself. ewan you were correct to raise this unfortunate issue and by the response you have had you can see just how worrying the behaviour of monty has become.i do agree that at his best the golf is sublime and i joy to watch and i will still despretley want him to win next week at birkdale and make the ryder cup but mt affection for him is now turning to anger. ewan keep up the good work and if monty is half the man i used to think he was then he will approach you with a sincere apology.
