Norman: 'Model professional'

We were all wondering who the star would be at the Open in the absence of Tiger Woods - but not many would have said that player would be 53-year-old Greg Norman.

Greg simply lit up the 137th playing of this grand championship with his charisma, class, natural talent and elegance.

Few have graced the fairways of the world as Norman has. He has suffered breaks against him, he has let majors slip by, but win or lose, Gregory John Norman has been the model professional golfer.

He learned to cope with success and failure. I have often said how fortunate we all are to be living in the era of Tiger, well, when I finish, I will be happy I lived my life alongside Norman.

When he hit the front at Birkdale on Friday, this Open became big news. By Saturday evening, the impossible was on the cards. On Sunday, the Australian got off to the start we hoped he wouldn't, yet it was the start we thought he would have.

A long time away from tournament golf told in the end, as did the advancing years, yet Norman as always, gave his best.

And in his victory speech, Padraig paid tribute to Norman. Those who played alongside Greg would expect that.

Great champion

Padraig is a great champion. I think when you hit the ball in the water twice at the 72nd hole and win, fortune is on your side. This time, Harrington had his wrist injury, although it did not seem to affect him greatly, and he won superbly well.

He has the ability to win when below his best. All of the great champions have had that ability. When their long game is less than average, their short game sharpens and Padraig never lost his belief or focus during the final round.

A run of bogeys were received in the same manner as the birdies and his patience was rewarded by playing the final four holes in text book fashion, in fact even better than that. Four under for the last six holes is champions golf of the highest order and his performances at Carnoustie and Southport deservedly give him his place in history.

What's more, the R&A have already said he has worn the title of champion so well during the past year. They can be assured he will do that again, all the way to Turnberry next year.

Progress

Ian Poulter moved his career up a notch and the performances of Henrik Stenson and the Open champion means it was a good week for Ryder Cup captain, Nick Faldo.

It looks like he will not have to give wild cards to any of these three. It means his side will have experience and he can use these two picks to give his side the correct balance when the time comes at the end of August.

Padraig has said Monty should be there to lead the side. Sergio has dropped out of the automatic places, Poulter on the fringes and Justin Rose hanging on. What else can we expect in Ryder year? What a change from twenty years ago when we had six top players and a struggle to find six others. Our Tour should be proud of their progress.

There was no Woods alongside the North Western coastline of England, but there was Chris Wood.

A few years back, Gordon Brand Jnr told me about a young lad in his junior class that would make the grade. He said Chris had a fine golf game along with all the other credentials to make it in the professional arena. On last week's show, Gordon was correct.

Many before him have struggled to make an immediate impact as a pro. It seems Chris might find it a little easier than some of them. His performance alongside the world's best was more than impressive and it added much to this year's championship.

Surprise

There were many who had their say on the withdrawal after nine holes of Sandy Lyle. I have to say, Sandy's actions surprised me. Having known him since a teenager, Sandy is no quitter and he has graced the game with his talent, etiquette, manners and all round decency. His decision also conveyed his honesty.

There are some I imagine who would have said they had a slight injury and that would have been the end of it. Sandy simply said his golf was awful and that he was holding back his playing partners.

Yes, it was wrong to walk off for that reason, for effectively, it stopped someone else playing in the game's greatest championship, in this case Mark Brown from New Zealand.

Sandy will be disappointed by his actions now the dust has settled, but many of his supporters will forgive him, and I think they should.

Vintage

Another week, another major and the Sky Sports team heads north of Hadrian's Wall to bring you the senior edition of the British Open. Royal Troon will be in showroom condition for four days of vintage golf from the stars of yesteryear.

Greg Norman will receive a tumultuous welcome, as will former major champions, Sandy Lyle, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Mark O'Meara, the evergreen Gary Player and the defending champion, Tom Watson, who returns to this Ayrshire links where he collected one of his five Opens. They will also be joined by an in form Jay Haas who leads the senior money list Stateside.

I hope the weather is a little kinder than it was at Royal Birkdale, because these enchanting links courses need a little defending, so a light breeze would be ideal.

Our coverage this week includes the action from Moscow as the Russian Open gets underway.

Call me a TV snob if you like, but the one thing I missed at the Open was high definition pictures. Our coverage from Royal Troon is in high definition and it's almost as if this technology was invented for golf. It offers a whole new viewing experience.

I can see it now, the clarity of the famous "postage stamp" the par three eighth, and the rugged run for home with the clubhouse a welcoming sight by the edge of the last green.

Two-time winner of this championship, Brian Barnes, joins our team this week and we look forward to your company from Thursday.

Ewen, In a recent article you were somewhat critical of Padraig Harrington about being over analytical and too meticulous. I presume you have had time to reflect on this given his second Open win? I feel he should be the example for others. I think his decision to play a week of links golf in Ireland the week before the Open stood to him again, while others chased the cash on offer on a US style course in Loch Lomand. I think his preparations are spot on. Two wins in the last five majors and he has contended at the last two Masters as well. He can¿t be faulted.

Another Major goes by and Rose , Westwood , Casey etc are nowhere to be seen. How many times have we heard these guys along with Luke Donald standing in front of the cameras telling us how great they are swinging it ,how comfortable they feel with their game but when it comes to delivering they are simply not up to it. Is it them talking or is it their psychologist in disguise because it's getting very boring. Stenson will win a Major before any of these guys because not only is he a top class golfer but he has the temperment and bottle required to win a Major. I could be wrong but i don't see Rose , Donald or Poulter ever winning a Major - harsh words but only my opinion. Casey and Westwood have a better chance but i'm not sure if they have the bottle. Harrington showed class on Sunday but also a huge amount of bottle. With a fit Tiger back next year the Majors will be harder to win again. The time has come for Adam Scott to deliver. I feel he will go very close in the USPGA next month and if he doesnt win it , then next year will be his breakthrough year in the Majors because he is a real class act. Keep up the good work Ewen.

I was at Birkdale on Friday and Saturday and i have to say the atmosphere and the lay out of the course made for some excellent golf. The weather made for the course very tough but very fair. It tested the golfers patience skill desire and shot making.Birdies were very hard to come by but winning a major is not all about making birdies. I was very disspointed by the body language of the modern young generation who week in week out play on the US PGA Tour. The weather conditions were not that bad on Friday compared to Saturday but some of the manarisms and gesticulating of the modern young golfer leave a lot to be desired when it comes to playing in anything other than tropical temperatures.

Some wonderful european performances on Sunday, particularly Harrington´s, Poulter´s, Stenson´s and that of Chris Wood´s. Well done guys. By the way, can Ian Poulter drive home in that white tuned buggy of his?

Ewen, can a case be made to follow Padraigs lead of playing a links event in the week before the Open?. The excellent Scottish Open at Loch Lomond could be moved to a suitable date. Replace it with a new event on a links course. The players would welcome it. Sponsors would benefit from a first class field. Supporters would attend in numbers and watch it on television. Links golf is unique. Padraigs two Open wins owe much to his preparation at the Irish P.G.A. event on a tough links course at the European club, near Dublin. Indeed, the Irish Open, which has recently suffered from weak fields, could be a candidate for the week before the Open, if held at Portmarnock or similar links course.

Thanks, Ewen, for such a positive article. On the US golf blogs I have read over the past week there were some 120 posts on Michelle Wie's DQ and some 20 on The Open - mainly castigating Norman, so it was refreshing and cheering to read your article. I do agree with the only negative re the TV coverage. On many occasions one could see the ball strike and the landing, but nothing inbetween, which made the technology look very old hat.. Still, it was nailbiting stuff right to the end. Sorry - got a keyboard jump!

Chris Woods just missed out on a spot at Augusta when he took 5 at 18th hole sunday... just shows you the fine line that exists in golf. I hope they give him an invite, he derserved it. Better than Justin Rose's performance I thought. Hope he can build on this. Ewen, whats your thoughts on John Daly ? he shot 89 friday for lowest score all weekend I think... he seems to be in a public war of words with Butch Harmon. What a shame to see him at 500+ plus in the world. I had the pleasure of going to Augusta last year and saw him there... no not playing... he was judging a 'bikini contest' at Hooters bar just a wedge distance away from Augusta National ! ! I was shocked... worlds best players were 500yards away competing for green jacket and here was one of my fav golfers not taking part but instead swigging beer at some tacky bar. It made me feel sorry for him. I know he has had problems off the course and I really hope he can sort himself out as golf is quiet without him.

good article Ewen as always, the only thing i have to say is about HD i dont really see the difference to be honest??? anyway keep up the good work, and im glad you pulled Monty up on his awful behaviour, i had the pleasure of his tongue last summer at the Alfred Dunhill Links event at Kingsbarns i could see it coming i was doing a security job minding my own buisness next thing i know he is looking right at me saying have you got a problem??? i was baffled !!

Thanks again for another brilliant article Ewen. I have to say that the Open made for fantastic entertainment and I agree 100% with you that the high definition coverage was missed. Some of the golf coverage Sky has provided in High Definition is nothing short of breathtaking, e.g the Welsh open. On a local note I was disappointed that Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy weren't in the open but Padraig winning again more than made up for that! Cheers!
