Geovanni: Hero for Hull

Chris Kamara reveals his picks of the weekend from the Premier League.

There were some great performances this weekend including Gary Megson's side going to West Ham and winning.

It was Bolton's first away win of their campaign and you could see how delighted Megson was with their 3-1 win.

Gareth Southgate's Middlesbrough also got their first away win and goalkeeper Ross Turnbull was superb in giving Boro their first clean sheet of the season.

Hats off to Joe Kinnear too who watched his side battle down from two goals down to record a draw with Everton. Everyone expected Newcastle to get beat and the fact that they could and probably should have won that game bodes well for them.

But for the second week running Hull is the team that has impressed me the most - and yet again Geovanni was the hero. Last week he got the equaliser against Arsenal and this week his goal on just nine minutes was a match winning effort.

Phil Brown is just getting everything right and getting the most of his players when it matters the most. Hull are certainly not a team not to take lightly and I can't wait to see what they do next.

Kammy's picks of the weekend...

GAME - Tottenham 0 - 1 Hull
The comeback of the week was obviously Liverpool but for me Hull have done it again. I don't think many people expected them to do it two weeks on the bounce. It just goes to show that there was no fluke about their win at Arsenal. They are a well drilled team and have really got themselves going. Their start has been incredible really.

GOAL - Grant Leadbitter
It was the quality of the goal. It was a goal out of nothing and Arsenal did not expect it. Leadbitter has that in his locker now and he is a decent player. Peter Crouch's goal was spectacular as well, but I think that Leadbitter's goal just sneaks it.

SAVE - Ross Turnbull
He certainly had to work for Boro and actually did a double save when he slipped. It is Middlesbrough's first clean sheet of the season and their first away win of 2008, so the monkey is off their back and hopefully they can build on that.

PLAYER - Fernando Torres
I backed him to be the top goal scorer at the start of the season and after a few scoreless games I did not panic. In fact I went back and put even more money on him. He is playing catch-up but he will be close at the end. His two goals for Liverpool against Manchester City showed just how good he is.

GAFFER - Phil Brown
Once again I have gone for Browny! Yes there were some good performances, but to keep the players focused after last week's heroics is not easy. But once again he has got everything just spot on.

TEAM - Hull
They just seem to be getting better and better and are playing some superb football. With two wins on the bounce they once again showed some great maturity and experience. Against Spurs to score nine minutes into the game and then hold out was superb stuff.

GRIPE - Manchester United's first goal
You see goalkeepers get the benefit of the doubt all the time. Quite often it is not a foul, but in this instance I think it was. Manchester United would have probably still gone on to win the game, but to be given a helping hand a second week in a row is frustrating. Jason Brown is not the tallest of goalkeepers, but to be pinned down did not help him at all. It is a minor gripe but still irritating.

Kammy, good to see you are still offering some sound advice. Long time since we crossed paths at Valley Parade. Now living in Oz and enjoying the great lifestyle and watching live premier league, plus some championship every weekend. Hull remind me of Bfd City that first season they went up - but can they find enough stability - and strength in depth in winter - to stay up?

HULL HULL HULL!! 3rd I still can't believe it. Am so pleased but being a hull fan from league 2, we will have a terrible games at some point, last year we lost to lower table opponents such as sheff wednesday etc, so don't be suprised if when it come to home games against stoke etc we get stuffed. I have to say though you are spot on with your praise and acknowledgement of hull citys successes this week and last. But to be fair my game of the week as far as enjoyment would have to be the liverpool game and not the hull game, i was at the hull game and to be 1 nil up with the speed of lennon and the likes running into the box made it a tense final 80 mins.

Regarding what Adam Norris (Liverpool fan) said earlier: "but a bit too much focus on Hull and not enough on Liverpool for my liking" Liverpool have and always will be in the spotlight, Hull have just arrived on the scene after a phenomenal rise up through the leagues, and they undoubtedly worked their socks off to travel to north London twice in a week and come away with 6 points. Yes Liverpool came back from 2-0 down to win 2-3 but thats what people have come to expect from Liverpool, Man Utd and the like. So for once, dont u think the smaller team deserves more credit than the big guns?

I'd have to disagree with you Chris. The gripe of the week was definately Arsenal's disallowed goal. The linesman had a good view and to rule that over the line was just disgraceful. United's first goal is debateable because of all the pushing and shoving that happens during set plays and I think Geovanni's goal should be goal of the week.

Nick Lynch (Manchester United fan) says...

Sorry, don't agree with the gripe. How can a team expect a free-kick with the pushing. If everyone looks again you can see Vidic is bundled into the goal keeper by Santa Cruz. And I must put a mention in for Rooney who was a different class, Rooney and Torres best players this weekend.

i was equally impressed by Hull and i think they still goin all the way and even cause mo upsets to bigger teams, hands up to Torres he is a magnificent striker, i lso think Man U dnt deserve their last two wins, they a just dubious

I think you are brilliant Kammi but Mr.Kamara,at the beginning of the season when all the Sky Sports Panel made their predictions, you ACTUALLY backed Alfonso Alves for the golden boot didn't you? And please tell me how Geovanni's hit against Spurs is not goal of the week? Granted, in terms of special/sentimental moments Leadbitter's goal was a deservedly beautiful moment for a true professional in English football and undoubtedly a great strike but honestly, have you seen many better freekicks than Geovannis?Gomes didn't move an inch for a shot that was all of 35 Yrds and with a wall!LOL...But on everything else you EVER say I completely agree!Haha

Daniel Mortensen (Arsenal fan) says...

I definitely agree that Man U's first goal was a foul, but I would also say that Arsenal's disallowed goal was also a error in decision. Why can't the refs seem to get it right this season?

Simon Nequest (Hull City fan) says...

I am glad that Hull are earning more respect from everyone in the country. I don't think anyone could have predicted such a start to the season but I think people were a bit harsh to say that Hull would go straight down. I think they need to perform against the lesser teams such as Bolton,Wba or Stoke. If they do so then I feel like we will stay up. I hope we can suprise more people with results against Chelsea Liverpool or even Man Utd. Although I am a bit upset that people seem to think that Hull are winning purely because the other team is playing badly. Keep it up!

Adam Norris (Liverpool fan) says...

Agree with most of what you're saying Kammy, but a bit too much focus on Hull and not enough on Liverpool for my liking.... Manager of the week should be Rafa. To come in at 0-2, playing awfully and inspire his side to a 3-2 win against a good side was exceptiona, he made all the right changes. Hulls performance was good, but not better than Liverpools.

Lee Ansell (West Bromwich Albion fan) says...

Hi Kammy, i dont see you talk much about the mighty superstars in stripes wba on here so i thought i'd ask you about this current team in comparison to the Cyrille Regis/Cunningham/Batson days. Do you think some of the players like Greening/Bednar/Zuiverloon will match up to them? and what do you think of the Miller man Ishmael Miller? Do you think he will find the form or the confidence to be a good Premiership striker? At Fulham he was pants!

Adam Ward (Hull City fan) says...

Hi Kammy Just like to say it's nice to see a pundit who actually has been giving us credit. There has been a lot said about playing Newcastle at the right time and Spurs cannot score, but at the game yesterday you can see the commitment of the City squad as all put in a 'shift' whether it be from the start or as a sub. Great credit has to go to the management for creating the belief and the team spirit. The player of the season so far has to be last seasons player of the year -- Michael Turner. He is forming a solid partnership with Zayatte at the minute and also had one with Gardner before he was unfortunatley injured. I just wondered if he continues to perform at such a high standard, could you see him in contention for a place in the sqaud of the England side? Also, where can you see us finishing this season? We are realistic and know that 4th bottom would be a massive acheivement.
