David Garrard: Big 4th and 2
The 2007/8 NFL season is nearing its climax with Super Bowl XLII less than a month away.
The wildcard games took place last week and Kevin Cadle chaired the proceedings here on Sky Sports as Jacksonville, Seattle, New York Giants and San Diego kept their seasons alive... for one more week at least.
Here on skysports.com KC picks his highlights of the weekend...
Jacksonville would have to be the team of the week because they won by far the best game.
To be able to go back to Pittsburgh and get the job done again, in dramatic form, was a great effort.
They had some big games from the big players; Maurice Jones-Drew did his thing and David Garrard came through when they needed him too but you'd have to say that it was an overall team effort.
Different players stood up at different times when Jacksonville needed them to and they did enough, just, to win the trip to New England.
Now the Jags will be hoping that they have got the mistakes out of their system last week because if they make the same ones again... they will get beaten by the Patriots.
After a slow start by the Giants, Eli played a solid ball game for New York in Tampa Bay, looking after the ball and finally delivering the post-season win for Tom Coughlin.
Eli won the battle against Jeff Garcia but you also have to give credit to Kevin Gilbride, New York's offensive coordinator. They made the right adjustments to win the game because they went out there with the plan to win the game, with their 15 plays, but those 15 plays just weren't working. So they changed it and they are still in it.
It has to be Garrard and his run on 4th and 2 at the end of the fourth quarter. If he doesn't make that run, their season is over, simple as that.
But he makes more than two yards and takes the Jaguars deep in to Pittsburgh territory, from where Josh Scobee kicked the all-important field goal.
Cam Cameron was finally axed as Miami Dolphins head coach this week and after their 1-15 season, are you really that surprised?
But it is not Cameron who is the villain of the piece down in Miami, but another man shown the door this week by the Fish. That man is Randy Mueller, the fired general manager, because as he walks out the door he leaves a team in disarray.
Miami fans can watch Chris Chambers playing in the playoffs with the Chargers and Wes Welker doing the same thing with the Patriots. Both of these are men the Dolphins have let go this year. There is no defense to speak of down there, yet Joey Porter has been brought in on big money, and you have to wonder how they are going to inspire all the young players in Miami next season.
At least the season is over.
The New York Giants will have star running back Brandon Jacobs fit and raring to go against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
Drew Brees has won the Associated Press offensive player of the year award.
Bruce Smith and Ron Woodson are among 17 finalists in the voting for the 2009 Hall of Fame induction class.
San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
San Diego running back LaDainian Tomlinson's groin injury makes him doubtful for the play-off match at Pittsburgh.
