Chris Harris: Surprise winner in 2007
Cardiff is, without question, the most high-profile meeting in the calendar. The noise, the atmosphere - you can almost touch it. And the riders respond to that.

Quotes of the week
It's an exciting time of the year - the countdown to the British Grand Prix. Cardiff is always extra special and I'm really looking forward to it.
The Cardiff track is quite similar to Copenhagen but, without question, it is the most high-profile meeting in the calendar.
The Millennium Stadium has a large part to play in the atmosphere of the night. It's quite a cosy stadium, it holds a decent capacity and the design of it, with its steep side terracing, means that you feel close to the action and you get an excellent view of the track.
The noise, the atmosphere - you can almost touch it. And the riders respond to that. They get very motivated.
The media attention on this meeting is huge, too. It's certainly the jewel in the speedway crown for us here at Sky Sports, and that attention all adds to the occasion and gives it an extra-special significance.
More and more people are becoming aware of the British Grand Prix and the television audiences are ever-increasing - anyone who goes to Cardiff can't fail to enjoy it.
It's nice to be able to say that our grand prix is at the Millennium Stadium because before the rebirth of Wembley, it was the number one stadium in the UK. It's a fantastic venue and it has helped bring the sport to a wider audience.
The riders will have their own routines in the run-up to a meeting like this. Some tend to go off and do something completely different like play nine holes of golf in the morning!
You have to wait until the end of the day to race so you've got time to kill. The mechanics will obviously be busy cleaning up from the practice the day before but the riders have to try and keep themselves occupied.
You don't want to be kicking your heels all day worrying about the meeting. You will have done the testing the day before and you will have decided which bike you want to start the meeting on, and which is going to be your spare one.
After those decisions have been made, up until the middle of the afternoon when you have to be back at the track, you don't want to be dwelling on the meeting too much.
If you allow your mind to run riot, it can become more difficult than it needs to be.
Chris Harris triumphed here in a nail-biting finale last year but unfortunately for him, he hasn't been in the same form this season.
That's understandable to a degree because the weight of expectation on him has been significantly heavier since he won his home grand prix.
I'd love it if he could manage to do the same again but the reality is that he'll be better off once this meeting is over because the question of whether can he do it again will have gone. If he doesn't, then he can focus on the rest of the season.
Obviously Nicki Pedersen will be lurking but I do like the way Jason Crump is riding at the moment. Talking to him on Monday night at Belle Vue, he definitely seems to have found some renewed confidence.
He's had four maximums on the spin at home at Belle Vue and he won a big meeting - the Jancarz Memorial - last Saturday in Poland against a lot of the grand prix riders, including Pedersen.
Crump has gone back to basics a bit with his equipment and it seems to be working for him so he'll be right up for it.
Tomasz Gollob is very excited about his World Championship campaign after he unexpectedly won in Copenhagen last time out. He'll be charging hard, as will people like Greg Hancock, who has won previously in Cardiff.
But of course, we haven't got a runaway leader this year. Pedersen leads the Championship but he hasn't managed to win a grand prix so it only take a win or a big performance from one of those guys behind him and all of a sudden, the standings will change quite significantly.
Scott Nicholls has certainly been in good form. He's been scoring plenty of points and will be desperate to do well in Cardiff because he hasn't done well in a Grand Prix so far this year. I think he'll put on a good display.
He's been working very hard to try and turn his season around and he seems to have found some form recently - he's been boosted, I think, by winning the British Championship.
As for the wildcard entry, Edward Kennett, this is a wonderful opportunity for him to show his talent on the bigger stage and I think the track will suit his style.
Ace commander: I'm going with Jason Crump. He's a proven winner - twice World Champion - and, talking to him, he seems right up for trying to win back the title.
Coventry's Ben Barker claimed the New Year Classic at Poole.
Coventry Bees have confirmed the return of captain Chris Harris for their 2009 campaign.
Ipswich Witches have confirmed finalised their 2009 plans after confirming deals with five more riders.
Eastbourne Eagles have turned down a Coventry bid for British star Ed Kennett.
Swindon Robins have confirmed that Travis McGowan has signed on for the 2009 season.

For me the best moment of the night was when Bomber got up from a nasty crash and 40000+ people started to sing "Land of hope and Glory" How moving, it sent a shiver down my spine. The low point was quite simply the Ref... FIM please take note

I very much enjoyed the cardiff experience, great pre match entertainment, incredible atmosphere and dramatic racing on a difficult track however 1 thing dissapointed me,the un sportsmanlike booing of world champion nicki pedersen. What did he do wrong ? He was knocked off 3 times and although leigh adams and bjarne pedersen were unlucky to be excluded that was the referee's decision not nicki's. He showed what a great sportsman he is by getting his bike off the track in the final when in obvios discomfort. Nicki is a very worthy champion and i very much hope he retains the title again this year.

Well, I was nor far away when I said Gregg Hancock was I. What an ambassador to the sport and what an absolute gentleman. Fair play to Crumpy though. He rode well the hole night. Can I just say before I sign off............ Where the hell did they get that referee from!!! If I behaved like that at work, I'd have had the push by now. He should never referee another meeting.

I went to the British GP last Saturday at Cardiff. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the meeting, but I have one issue. The PA system, music etc. was much too much. One of the most exiting time to me is when the boys are at the tape, and start revving up to go. This was drowned by the music, in fact the bikes were quieter that the PA system. I don't like moaning because the whole event was good. Maybe someone with influence could look at this problem regards Bob Godfrey (grumpy old man)

A great nights racing ruined by the referee. I just hope the FIM act after this latest debacle. I agree with the previous comment about the track whilst the ruts made it exciting it was boardering on dangerous and someone could have sufferd a serious injury. Look at the Danish track from the last GP great racing and a smooth racing surface.

What a Night !!! Our first time at Cardiff and won't be our last, we've been to many finals in football, motorsports and rugby to name but a few and have never ever seen a night so well presented, planned and executed as this, it really is a credit to all involved, shame no British winner but well done Jason and all without the help of the referee (unlike a certain Dane) The referee was unbelievably out of touch with reality but poor as he was contributed to the overall excitment (doubt mssrs B Pedersen or Adams agree) Hopefully he will not be in charge again but knowing speedways penchant for foot shooting I doubt it. Having over the years supported Halifax and Bradford it was nice to come back from tv watching to live speedway in such spectacular fashion, keep it up and make speedway the premier sport it should be...

What an excellent Grand Prix with I thought some very good racing but it is a shame about some of the decisions that that the ref made as b Perderson and Leigh Adams didnt deserve to be excluded. Just watched it back in HD and just WOW so clear and can really get the atmosphere of the night and you can really see how skiled the riders are and the sweat and blood of a nights racing, im looking forward to more Speedway in HD soon hopefully

The meeting had all the atmosphere one could wish for. But I cannot understand why the track was in such a bad state after heat one, Surely after laying it down since 2001 you would have thought they could get it better than that, it made for exciting racing but at the expense of the riders safety, I believe this was exploited by Nikki Pedersson, with some of the most diabolical referring of any speedway match i have witnessed. If imrovement cant be guarenteed another venue must be sought if the trend to put speedway on the map is to be continued. A true fan Since Tamworth Hounds Days starting in 1947. Come on you guys, this is the British GP and we should be behind our lads all the way. Saying Pederson will win or Crump will win may be right but that doesn't do any favours to Scotty, Chris or Ed. they will be riding their socks off for themselves and us so, please, lets be a bit more positive. Heres to a great nights speedway.

I'm not going to Cardiff this year due to price of fuel and going on holiday in 2 weeks but im looking fortward to watching it in HD at home again well done to Sky for showing speedway in HD for the first time and as Mr wilkinson said please lets have some elite League and worl team cup in HD. My prediction is for H Anderson to win and N Pederson 2nd and I hope F Lindgren has good round after his injury and the Brits too

I cant see any of the brits doing amything. They are just not doing it in the GP at all. Scott is flying in the league and Harris is struggling.I Don't even think its going to be one of the top 5 that win it.. I am looking at AJ, Lidgren or evn Hans Andersen. But I do Hope that Ed Kennet has a good GP as he has been riding well. Especially guesting for Wolves.

Please anybody but N Pederson, great rider but up to his usual tricks this season, ie diving off his bike a few gp's ago against crumpie and trying to fence crumpie last time out. I just hope the Brits can make a fight a fight of it.

I'm afraid your all barking up the wrong tree.......... Keep your eye's and money on Greg Hancock. He's been outstanding on that track every year. I think his names already on that winners rostrum this year. Come on you Heathens.....................

I fancy Leigh Adams to do well at Cardiff, he has a godo draw early in and has been in good form of late. You can never rule out the top 4 but as we saw in the last GP, Gollob when he wants it can and will beat anyone. Winner for me will be Adams.

I think Nicki Pedersen is going to take this one. He keeps grinding out the results in the Grand Prix's and finds himself 11 points clear at the top. As much as i'd like to see Bomber repeat last years success he is just not cutting it at Grand Prix level. As for Scott Nicholls, he's so often missing that killer touch and the "bit" that is required to take him to the next level above being a good heat leader in the leagues. Top 3 Prediction for Cardiff: 1. Nicki Pedersen 2. Hans Andersen 3. Jason Crump

Steve Hilliard says...
Cant see further than the usual contenders Nicki Pedersen, Hans Andersen, Jason Crump for this SGP. Poss if the track cuts up badly then could look further afield as riders may get caught out. However if the track is similar to Parken , I will go for Crump to win Pedersen and Andersen to be on the rostrum. As for the Brits, Scott Nicholls has been in decent form and scoring plenty of points and agreed will be desperate to do well in Cardiff. He has to do well in Cardiff or he can start waving his SGP hopes for 2009 goodbye. Chris Harris has struggled with machinery and would be a big surprise if Bomber reaches the semi-finals. What odds can we get for Edward Kennett being the first Brit to win a heat in the SGP's this season ?????
