Hatton v Malignaggi Ricky belts

Hatton: back in love with boxing

I have to say well done to my old mate Ricky Hatton.

I thought it was a good, concentrated performance in whch he looked solid, he looked fit and above all he looked rejuvenated.

In terms of style I don't think it was vastly different to what he's always done but what I liked was the renewed vigour and confidence Ricky showed.

Things must just have gone flat for him since that defeat by Floyd Mayweather Jnr and you have to give the guy credit for going out there, trying to do something different to change all that.

Whatever he and Floyd Snr have been up to it has clearly given him a new lease of life. We saw a similar thing with Matthew Hatton in his fight with Ben Tackie, where he looked energetic and buzing and the decision to change trainers has clearly paid off.

Ricky still went out there and got hit with every punch in the book in the first round, so I am not exactly sure what defensive work they did, but he seemed sharp and was right on his game which was good.

But as good as Ricky was, I have to say I was disappointed in Paulie Malignaggi. For all my worrying on these pages in the run-up to the fight, by the time it had arrived I had come to the conclusion that Malignaggi had done nothing to suggest he could beat Ricky Hatton - even a poor Ricky Hatton.

And he did go straight into defensive mode as soon as he got hit, but that usually makes fights terrible for the guy who is on top.

To be fair to Ricky, he did his best to unravel him, although from about the second round onwards when he went back to his corner, he looked like he'd rather be anywhere else in the world than trying to fathom a guy who was running, ducking, holding and clinching for nine rounds.

But he stuck at it and did show a lot more patience. He also used that jab a lot more and threw the long jab that almost becomes an uppercut, which is so hard to defend against.

Like I say though, on the whole it wasn't like Ricky was doing things we hadn't seen before. But he was much cooler, much more laid-back and it seems that has been the biggest change brought about by Mayweather.

And listening to him afterwards, he just seemed a much older and wiser man. In the past his fighting and his interviews have been a little gung-ho and he's just rushed in, but this time he fought and talked like the intelligent boxing man we all know he is.

That bodes well for the future, wherever that may be. He could stay at light-welterweight and make more defences and stay on top of his game for another two years, but boxing is about challenges - and that means Oscar de la Hoya.

That is a fight I think Ricky can win. I said before the Floyd Mayweather fight I would rather see him in with de la Hoya for one simple reason: Oscar isn't as mobile. He stands in front of you and although he is the bigger guy, that will suit Ricky far better.

And don't forget, Oscar is no spring chicken anymore.

That is going to be one megafight for megabucks if it does come off and much like Mayweather, there's no disrespect in it if Ricky does get beaten by the Golden Boy. He'd be mad not to jump at the chance!

But in the meantime, I am just glad we saw Ricky Hatton, at this stage of his career, looking refreshed, full of enthusiasm and back in love with the sport.

I admire and respect him for taking himself off and doing something different and although it was a gamble, you have to say it worked well. He has outclassed the next best guy in the division, he has got his hunger back and he has silenced the doubters.

Hat's off to Hatton!

Here Here to Ben Thomsons comments i agree entirely, WHAT A PERFORMANCE. I must admit i was a little worried that hatton style 2 much and not be the same, for me there were positives and negatives from rickys performance for example i did not see one hatton trade mark "body punch" however that did not seem to matter as hatton beat mallinaggi at his own game, i dont agree with glen's comments about his deffence, fair enough first round yes hatton did walk through a few shots but you have to remember this guy is very fast, yet after the 2nd round hatton barely got hit, now to say that in a hatton fight is unheard off epecially when the man he is fighting is know as one of the fastest pound for pound boxers in the world that speaks volumes. What was the most impressive for me on the night was how he broke mallinaggi's heart, in only the second round, cotto could not do that and everyone knows he got battered in that fight, yet his sprit was still there and he gained alot of respect in the boxing world for the heart he showed, it took hatton not even 6 minuties to break that famous heart and put mallinaggi into his shell, i have watched several times now and i believe this was hattons best performance for many many year, maybe even his best ever. One more thing i would like to say is to the doubters, i agree hattons last performance prior to this was not to par but i think that is mainly due to bad press people saying he is washed up 2 old and the rest of it. If you ask hatton honestly now his confidence is back, was he ever really concidering retirement, he would say no, and he only said that so the press would not talk about his lack of long jevity in the sport. The ring entrance was good, the look on Michael Buffer after hatton got into the ring with the fatton suit on was a picture, And all round excellent performance WELL DONE HATTON BRITAIN IS PROUD OF YOU!

Ricky looked good but Malignaggi was plain awful. I have never seen someone use such negative tactics in a world title fight. He should never be allowed on as a main eventer in future. He held at every opportunity and didn't even look like he was trying to win, just going through the motions.

I have to say, unlike Glenn, that Ricky did look different from the Ricky I went to watch out in Vegas against PBF. Althought he was still very aggressive, I do think he's added a few strings to his bow, in the fact that he moved his head way, way more. He didn't look content with taking shots like Kostya Tszyu fight, where he took many a punch. After watching the replay again his movement and counter punch was fantastic, not something usually associated with Ricky. I also think that the next fight needs to Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao is a young fresh up and coming fighter. ODLH on the other hand is coming to the end of his career and Ricky doesn't want to be seen pick off teh older fighters. Pacquiao is a very, very good boxer with immense support and I think if they fight and Ricky beats him then he'll be where he was before the PBF defeat. Unlike one British boxer, Ricky's not all about the money, so if Manny wins then this should be the fight.

As always Ricky does his talking in the ring with his fists not outside of it. Ricky looked sharp and was always in controll of the fight. If Ricky had boxed with one hand behind his back i still think he would have beaten the outspoken Malignaggi. I would love to see Hatton have two more fights and then call it quits. His next fight should be against Del La Hoya i reckon he would beat him and then the grand finale a rematch against Mayweather. I reckon this would be the biggest ever staged boxing match and Hatton

I can't believe listening to all the experts how many thought Ricky would actually lose this fight - Malagnaggi has stopped a handful of opponents in 20 odd fights!! And then to cpmpare him to Mayweather was ridiculous, I just don't know where this comparison came from, he's only fought Cotto and although valiant in defeat he was comprehensively beaten. I can only presume people were doubting Hatton's conditioning more than his ability.

It would be nice to see someone for a change going on record admitting they got something wrong. Glenn McCrory didn't have a positive word to say about Hatton's hook-up with Mayweather beforehand, yet there's no acknowledgement of that here. As for Hatton - very well done but I think the idea that the woeful Malignaggi is the "next best fighter in the division" is a joke. Does anyone seriously think that phoney is in the same league as Timothy Bradley? Hatton's proposed fight with De La Hoya would make sense financially because for some reason he is still a big draw, despite clearly being over the hill. There's no way in a million years he is still a pound for pound top ten fighter, as Ricky suggests. There are a few of those operating in the 147 division, none of whom Ricky would dream of getting in with (Margarito, Cotto, Williams).

Murray Harper says...

What next for Ricky Hatton. If he moves up to Welterweight there is a lot more competition and some pretty tough competition. Margarito, Cotto, Williams would surely put up more resistance than Malignaggi but I don,t see them getting a mention as possible opponents.

Ricky Hatton emerged the winer after a week that had him threatining to retire after the constant abuse and undertones set by the press.Hatton tottaly outclassed a bloke who should not have been in the ring after the 8th round .Mallinagis speed is second to none but his power and inability to find the target let him down on several occassions .Malinaggi also took the liberty of trash talking all week to a man with superior knockout and stoppage ratio .the facts are simple ricky hatton now has to look up the ladder again to other weight divsions as the tottal domination and lack of worthy competiors could see one of the best british boxers of all time fade away because of the droght.

Two fingers up to all the doubters who never gave ricky a chance...people talked about him boxing like a wrestler but it was malignaggi who was constantly holding but more to the point he was hiding from hatton..personally im glad as malignaggi could talk the talk but couldnt walk the walk.....

wow! what a performance from the hitman! after all paulies talk the hitman completely outboxed him. i think you could really see what mayweather snr had been trying to teach him, so hats off to ricky but also to his trainer because there were a few questions asked about him before this fight, im sure you noticed the way ricky kept putting his arm around malignaggi's head to break up his attacks.....just like mayweather jnr did to him, wonder who tought him that? there truly is only one ricky hatton!!!

Steve Beattie says...

glad to see Ricky back on top, he's a fantastic boxer and figurehead for a wonderful sport! he showed the rest of the division that he is still the man to beat! a rematch with mayweather is not a good idea as i just think it will go the same way again! will be a good match up if he fights oscar or manny pacquaio. id also love it if he did fight that pretender khan as ricky would bring an end to that poor excuse for a boxer's career! my gran could knock that idiot out!
