Hungarian GP qualifying was red-flagged for a second time after Marcus Ericsson crashed his Sauber in Q1

The first part of a rain-affected Hungarian GP qualifying claimed three drivers, with Marcus Ericsson, Felipe Massa and Rio Haryanto all spinning into the wall.

Q1 was delayed by 20 minutes after a torrential downpour at the Hungaroring and drivers had been easing into the session for less than five minutes before Ericsson's crash at Turn 10 in his Sauber.

It was the Swede's second high-profile collision in two grands prix, with his British GP P3 incident ruling him out of Silverstone qualifying, and on this occasion he locked up at the left-hander on the wet tyre.

"It was difficult conditions for sure but it was same for everyone, you can not blame that," Ericsson told Sky F1. "It was a bad mistake which should not happened."

The opening qualifying session in the Hungarian Grand Prix was red-flagged for a third time after Felipe Massa put his Williams in the wall

Drivers soon switched to the intermediate tyre following the restart with the sun starting to peer out in Budapest, though there still seemed to be rivers on track with a possibility of aquaplaning.

One man on the green-marked compound was Massa but it was the experienced Williams driver who crashed out next, headbutting the barriers on his out-lap after touching the white line on the way out of Turn Four.

"It was like a river coming in the middle," said the Brazilian. "Every corner before that, I felt the intermediates were the quickest tyres."

Q1, usually a simple 18-minute session, had just over a minute remaining when it was Haryanto's turn -  a near carbon-copy of Ericsson's shunt at Turn 10.

Rio Haryanto crashed his Manor resulting in the fourth red flag of the Hungarian GP Q1 qualifying session, ending it prematurely

The hat-trick of collisions meant all three drivers exited Q1, along with Jolyon Palmer, Kevin Magnussen and Pascal Wehrlein - who were unable to complete final flying laps thanks to Haryanto.

One hour and 14 minutes after the session was due to start, it finally finished with a Mercedes one-two.
