Who is Rio Haryanto? Profiling the new Manor driver

Indonesian to make F1 debut in 2016 alongside Pascal Wehrlein

Rio Haryanto will make his F1 debut with Manor in 2016 as part of an all rookie line-up, but who is he?

Born on January 22 1993, Haryanto is from the Indonesian island of Central Java.

Haryanto's links to the Manor team can be traced back to 2010 when he drove for the team's GP3 squad. His prize for finishing as the top Manor driver that season was an outing with the F1 team, then called Virgin Racing, at the post-season young driver test in Abu Dhabi.

He continued with Manor in GP3 in 2011, before graduating to GP2 in 2012 with Carlin, who carried Marussia branding that season. He partnered Max Chilton that season and the pair both earned their super licences at the young driver test at Silverstone with Marussia. During the GP2 campaign, Haryanto was comprehensively outperformed by Chilton, finishing over 130 points behind his team-mate.

While Chilton graduated to F1, Haryanto continued in GP2 finishing 19th in the standings in 2013 with Addax, 15th in 2014 with Caterham and fourth in 2015 with Campos Racing.

Haryanto gained further F1 experience at the end of 2015 when he completed 56 laps at Pirelli's post-season tyre test in Abu Dhabi with Manor.

Prior to his association with Manor, Haryanto won the 2009 Formula BMW Pacific, a year after making his graduation to single-seater racing.
