Jenson Button admitted while McLaren could be pleased with making a two-stop strategy work to finish fifth in the Chinese GP the necessity of the ploy only served to underline the MP4-28's lack of fundamental pace.

"So we take away positives but we know we've now quick enough and we need to improve." Team-mate Sergio Perez, meanwhile, endured a trying afternoon and finished one place outside the points in 11th place. The Mexican employed the same strategy as Button but finished the best part of half a minute behind the sister car and afterwards hinted at underlying problems with his MP4-28. "Very disappointed," was Perez's blunt assessment of his emotions. "It's been a very difficult race. [I was] lacking so much pace and I think there is a lot to be analysed for us and to be learned because it's been the worst weekend for us in terms of pace."
