Nico Rosberg took his second pole of the season after Q3 was brought to an early end following a huge crash for Daniil Kvyat.
Further down the order, there was more pain for McLaren at Honda's home track with Fernando Alonso the slowest in Q2 and venting his frustrations over the radio, while Jenson Button also criticised the team after his Q1 exit.
