All-time Greats header

You have voted in your thousands for the best player to wear a St Mirren shirt and the winners are .... Tony Fitzpatrick and Frank McAvennie.

We asked fans of each of the 92 English League teams and Scottish Premier League sides to nominate their all-time favourite footballers and there was a tie between two St Mirren favourites.

Club stalwart Tony Fitzpatrick polled the same number of votes as the flamboyant Frank McAvennie, while Mark Yardley took third spot.

Tony Fitzpatrick

The holder of most league appearances for St Mirren, Fitzpatrick played 351 games for the club over a 15-year period.

Fitzpatrick made his St Mirren debut in 1973 and returned for his second stint at the club in 1981 after spending two seasons with Bristol City.

The whole-hearted midfielder was an inspirational figure for the club and had the honour of being captain when St Mirren won the 1987 Scottish Cup final against Dundee United, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 1-0 success.

He has also had two spells as St Mirren manager, being thrust into the job for the first time in 1988 towards the end of his playing days.

Fitzpatrick's first stint at the St Mirren helm ended in 1991, but he returned for another stab at the job between 1996 and 1998.

Frank McAvennie

Tying for top spot in the poll to find St Mirren's all-time greatest player is the colourful McAvennie, who was a popular character at the club in the early 1980s.

Supremely gifted on the ball, McAvennie started out as a midfielder before going on to prove himself one of the classiest strikers in both the English and Scottish game.

He scored 70 goals in 207 appearances for St Mirren between 1980 and 1985, with many of his efforts coming from a midfield position.

McAvennie also notched the goal that earned St Mirren a Uefa Cup spot in 1984/85 and that proved to be his last contribution to the club.

In the summer of 1985, McAvennie joined West Ham United after struggling to get on with St Mirren manager Alex Miller.

Mark Yardley

Nicknamed 'The Pieman', Yardley spent a productive eight seasons with St Mirren after joining the club from Cowdenbeath in 1995.

Known for his bulky frame, Yardley also knew where the net was and his committed approach made him a firm favourite with the fans.
