AC Milan suffered a setback in their bid to qualify for the Europa League next season as they fell to a last-gasp 2-1 defeat to local rivals Atalanta. An own goal from Gianpaolo Bellini gave the Rossoneri the lead early in the second half, but a second-half penalty from German Denis brought the Nerazzurri level at the Stadio Atleti Azzurri D'Italia. Milan pushed for a winner, but it was Atalanta substitute Franco Brienza who found it for the Bergamo side with the last kick of the game. The result leaves Clarence Seedorf's men anxiously awaiting results elsewhere with the prospect of them falling four points behind sixth-placed Torino with only one game of the season to go. Atalanta may have had nothing but pride to play for, but they nevertheless looked keen to end their final home game of the season on a high note. Denis flicked a header wide before Carmona saw his shot saved by Marco Amelia after Denis touched the ball back for him. Atalanta increased the pressure and another header from Denis went just wide of the far post, where Giacomo Bonaventura only just failed to reach the ball. Just before half-time, Milan went closer still to scoring when Mario Balotelli curled a free-kick from left of the penalty area against the crossbar. Milan had the first chance of the second half too, and this time it resulted in a goal with Sulley Muntari's cross turned past Andrea Consigli by Bellini. With Stephan El Shaarawy on the field celebrating his return from injury, Milan's attack started to take control of the game, but a defensive mistake gifted Atalanta an equaliser. Kevin Constant fouled Carlos Carmona in the area and Denis stepped up to beat Amelia from the spot. The game opened up, but it was Milan who wanted to win the game more, Atalanta just waiting for chances on the break. Balotelli hit the woodwork again with a speculative shot from the corner of the penalty area before Giuseppe De Luca wasted a great chance to snatch victory in the final minute, but El Shaarawy tracked back to tackle him inside his own penalty area. There was to be one final twist, though, with Giulio Migliaccio teeing up Brienza to curl in a spectacular 25-yard effort unstoppably into the top left-hand corner, sparking a pitch invasion of Atalanta substitutes and staff as the final whistle sounded.
