Jewell facing increased pressure following Barnsley defeat

Derby manager Paul Jewel is under increased pressure as his side slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Barnsley at Oakwell. Iain Hume set Barnsley on their way and Stephen Foster added a second to secure the points for the home side. Having been relegated as the worst team in the history of the Premier League last season, another defeat leaves Jewell facing increased criticism. Derby, whose last league win on the road came way back in 2007, were the more threatening side throughout and looked the most likely to break the deadlock before Hume's stunning volley. Jewell will be cursing his side after they failed to take advantage of their second half dominance where Rob Hulse and Paul Green in particular wasted good chances.

Future

The former Wigan chief's future at Pride Park could come under further scrutiny after his winless league run at the club was extended to 28 matches. Barnsley started the match in the ascendancy with Diego Leon dictating most of the early play from the centre of the park. But it was Derby who had the first shot in earnest with Addison sending a long-range effort well wide of Luke Steele's post.
Deadlock
Reds skipper Brian Howard had a chance to break the deadlock in the second half when he shot over from close range. The visitors then took the game by the scruff of the neck and Hulse, who had done little in the first half, created two great chances within five minutes. He then forced a good save from Steele with a shot from way outside the area before Hume stuck 18 minutes from time. The goal deflated the visitors and they went further behind in the 83rd minute when Foster rose the highest to head home Hume's centre.
