Bordeaux moved up to second in Ligue 1 as Yoann Gouffran scored the only goal in the second half to sink title rivals Marseille.
Bordeaux had gone into the match in eighth but the win and three points moved them up to 24, one point behind leaders Lyon.
Defeat left Marseille fourth in the table, two points behind Lyon.
Marseille could have taken the lead after 14 minutes when Morgan Amalfitano drilled in a right-footed shot from distance.
The ball bounced awkwardly in front of Bordeaux keeper Cedric Carrasso and he was lucky to see his fumbled save send the ball just wide of the right upright.
Marseille continued to press the home side and when Andre Ayew's cross from the left was headed away by Benoit Tremolinas the ball fell to Charles Kabore on the edge of the area.
Kabore controlled the ball before firing in a shot which went just the wrong side of the post.
The home side went close to taking the lead with 10 minutes of the first half remaining when Henri Saivet beat Steve Mandanda to a corner from the right but his header was headed off the line by Jeremy Morel.
Five minutes later Marseille were denied when Morel passed to Ayew but his shot was saved by Carrasso to keep the game goalless at the break.
Eight minutes into the second half Tremolinas swung the ball in to the near post and Gouffran got ahead of his marker and slid in to knock the ball past Mandanda from close range for the only goal.
Marseille's Rod Fanni crossed from the right on the hour and Ayew headed the ball at goal but Carrasso was able to make a comfortable save.
Mariano then set up Gouffran with some good approach play but his team-mate completely missed his kick when going for an acrobatic shot.
To make matters worse for Marseille they were reduced to 10 men just before the end of the game when defender Lucas Mendes was dismissed for a professional foul.
Ludovic Obraniak was through on goal and when Mendes brought him down he was shown a straight red by the referee.
