Chesterfield were left stunned following Bury's first-half blitz that set up a convincing 3-1 win at Saltergate.
The visitors took a grip on the game in the fourth minute when Ben Futcher connected with an overhead kick from eight yards out.
Chesterfield's hopes took another blow when star striker Jack Lester went off injured in the 16th minute.
Bury were winning all the key battles and they got a second goal in the 27th minute when Efe Sodje burst clear on the right to fire a low shot past Tommy Lee.
Andy Morrell grabbed a third five minutes before the interval when he finished off a neat passing move, but Chesterfield hit back when Lloyd Kerry scored with a 12-yard shot in the 53rd minute.
Chesterfield never gave up but without Lester, lacked the firepower to really trouble Bury who held on to claim a deserved victory.
