Brad Inman is set to add to bottom club Crewe's injury misery for the Sky Bet League 1 visit of Sheffield United.
The Scotland Under-21 midfielder bruised a foot in last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Blackpool and heavy swelling means he is likely to miss the Blades' trip to Gresty Road.
Crewe have won only twice all season and vice-captain David Fox was this week ruled out for up to eight weeks with a cracked vertebrae sustained at Blackpool, while Harry Davis (knee) and Dave Richards (foot) are still a month away from fitness.
Fox was the stand-in skipper with Davis sidelined and Crewe boss Steve Davis says goalkeeper Ben Garratt and defenders Ollie Turton and Ben Nugent are under consideration to take the armband in the next few weeks.
Sheffield United midfielder Ryan Flynn is hoping to make his first start in six matches.
Flynn stepped off the bench in last week's home defeat to Millwall after recovering from a groin problem and has come through a further week of training unscathed.
Boss Nigel Adkins revealed he had 26 outfield players training on Thursday - his healthiest squad since he took charge in the summer - but despite no new injury or suspension problems several players remain sidelined.
Defenders Bob Harris (pelvis), John Brayford (knee), Craig Alcock (hip and ribs) and David Edgar (hamstring), plus midfielder James Wallace (thigh) are still out.
