Dundee United have moved level on points with Hibernian in the Scottish Championship after defeating Dunfermline 1-0 at Tannadice on Tuesday night.
Nathaniel Wedderburn was sent off for the visitors six minutes before the break but United had to wait until the 79th minute to make their numerical superiority count, when Simon Murray scored from a corner.
Dunfermline adopted a cautious approach in the opening stages having already been beaten by Ray McKinnon's side twice this season.
The Tangerines were limited to a Scott Fraser shot that went wide and a Murray effort that was kept out by Athletic goalkeeper Sean Murdoch in the early stages.
But the dismissal of Wedderburn for a two-footed lunge at Tony Andreu gave referee Don Robertson little option but to show him a red card and tipped the balance in the hosts' favour.
Dunfermline's response was to dig deep in a bid to frustrate their opponents and they almost snatched a goal when Kallum Higginbotham fired a shot across goal.
Their resolve was finally broken, however, when the ball came to Murray at the back post corner and he smashed home.
Dunfermline remain second-bottom of the Scottish Championship, five points above St Mirren, who they face in their next league game on November 19.
