Gomes will take part in his fifth major tournament in Austria and Switzerland and his form in front of goal could be crucial to Portugal's hopes.
Gomes has been an established member of the squad since being selected for Euro 2000, when he scored the winner as Portugal came from behind to beat England 3-2 and went on to net four goals.
He was hit with a seven-month international ban for pushing referee Gunter Benko following the semi-final defeat to France and then flitted between the starting line-up and the substitutes' bench in the early part of Scolari's reign.
Gomes has become the most senior striker in the Portugal setup since the retirement of Pauleta in 2006 and, now fourth on his country's all-time top goalscorers list, will be hoping to put his predatory instincts to good effect if, as expected, he is asked to play as a lone frontman with two wingers in support.
Gomes enjoyed two seasons at Fiorentina from 2000 but has spent most of his club career in his homeland, originally with Boavista and then with Benfica.
He has not been prolific over the last two seasons but his record stands up well and it is also difficult to quantify how helpful his renowned battling qualities are to his team-mates.
