Patrick Vieira is baffled by his omission from France's World Cup qualifying play-off squad.

Les Bleus are set to face Republic of Ireland in a two-legged contest this month to determine who will take their place in South Africa next summer.

Vieria, who tasted global glory on home soil in 1998, feels his experience could prove invaluable in such a fixture.

However, despite boasting 107 caps to his name, he has been overlooked by coach Raymond Domenech.

The Inter Milan ace has been struggling to hold down first-team football this season, but he insists he is sharp enough for international action.

He believes Domenech has made the wrong decision in leaving him out against the Irish, but has vowed to do all he can to force his way back into the fold should France book their safe passage to the finals.

Best around

"I know that, in my position, there is no one better than me in France at the moment," Vieira told L'Equipe.

"This could seem pretentious but I am sure of that.

"I have set myself the target of featuring in the next World Cup. What is certain is that I will do the maximum to be there. After that, there is a coach who will make his choices and take responsibility for them."

Vieira has seen his future at Inter called into question of late, with a lack of opportunities reported to be forcing him towards an exit.

The 33-year-old admits he must be a regular starter if he is to fulfil his World Cup dream, but claims he is capable of holding down a place in Jose Mourinho's plans.

He added: "I know my delicate situation in that I am not an unquestionable starter for my club. I am getting back to my top level, which is encouraging. I have overcome this stage.

"Now, I have to build up a run of matches and be a regular player."

Tough call

Should Vieria be able to demonstrate that he is back to his best over the coming months, Domenech has hinted that he would be willing to bring the former Arsenal man back into the national set-up.

"It has not been an easy call (leaving Vieira out)," he said.

"I am happy Pat is back playing at the highest level. But we had to weigh up the pros and cons, and there are many reasons behind the decision to leave him out.

"I just want him to go on improving and bring us his experience at the World Cup."
