Roberto Martinez has championed the idea of Charles N'Zogbia playing for England after it emerged the Wigan winger is eligible to represent Fabio Capello's side.
Despite having represented France at Under 21 level N'Zogbia has the required residential credentials to play for England.
It has always been thought the former Newcastle man wanted to play for his native France but Martinez has now revealed he is open to switching allegiance.
N'Zogbia has established himself as a key player at the DW Stadium this season and has added a consistency to the promise he showed in his early days at Newcastle.
Alternative
With England light of left-sided options given Ashley Cole's injury and Wayne Bridge's self-imposed exile, Martinez feels N'Zogbia - who has experience of playing at left-back - is a viable alternative for Capello.
"I asked Charles the other day about England and he said he was hoping. I think he is definitely open to playing for England," said Martinez.
"I thought he wanted to play for France but he's been living in England so long now he's ready to represent whichever country asks him.
"He's only 23 and hasn't peaked yet - he's certainly got the potential to get into the England squad.
"Charles is a left-footed player playing on the right side and is a great option for any squad. He relies on his streetwise ability. He's very tactically aware.
"Leighton Baines is proving that you don't need size to play left-back, but I think Charlie has a lot more to offer in the last third than in the defensive third."
