Everton v Wigan preview

Deadline day signing Royston Drenthe could make his first start for Everton against Wigan Athletic at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Drenthe in contention after reserves run-out

New signing Royston Drenthe could make his first start for Everton against Wigan Athletic at Goodison Park on Saturday. The Dutch winger joined the Merseyside club on deadline day in a season-long loan deal from Real Madrid. He made a brief cameo appearance in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa last weekend but played more than an hour for the Toffees' second string on Wednesday, meaning he could be in contention for a starting spot. David Moyes' men are aiming for their first home win of the season after being denied all three points last week against Villa thanks to a Gabriel Agbonlahor goal seven minutes from time. Moyes was keen to praise the impact of some of his young players after the game, which was preceded by a protest march by a section of fans unhappy with the lack of investment at the club. The Scot admitted it would be hard for the Toffees to break into the top six given the lack of cash at Goodison Park but maintained his belief that he could remodel the side using a number of young players coming through the ranks, including Seamus Coleman, Jack Rodwell, Ross Barkley, Magaye Gueye and Apostolos Velios.

Changes

Meanwhile Wigan boss Roberto Martinez is looking for a response from his side after they crashed out of the Carling Cup to Crystal Palace in midweek. Martinez did make a number of changes for the game at Selhurst Park, but with last Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Man City still fresh in the mind, it all adds up to a frustrating week for the Spaniard, who saw his side go unbeaten in their opening three league games. They make the short trip from the DW Stadium to Merseyside hoping to claim their first win on the road this season. Deadline day signing Shaun Maloney was one of four new players on show against Palace, but he has admitted the poor performance means a number of squad players have missed the chance to force their way into the manager's first-team plans.

Team news

Drenthe is in contention for a starting spot after scoring for the reserves in midweek. Gueye also played in that game and declared himself fully fit after recovering from a broken toe sustained in pre-season. Striker Victor Anichebe remains on the injury list with a groin strain. Wigan defender Emmerson Boyce is rated only 50-50 for the game as he recovers from a hamstring strain. Antolin Alcaraz (thigh) and Steven Gohouri (calf) are definitely out. Summer signings Albert Crusat, Maloney, David Jones and Patrick van Aanholt will hope they did enough against Palace in midweek to keep their place in the starting line-up.
Possible starting XIs:
Everton: Howard, Baines, Jagielka, Distin, Hibbert, Rodwell, Fellaini, Coleman, Osman, Drenthe, Cahill. Wigan: Al Habsi, Caldwell, Boyce, Lopez, Figueroa, Watson, Moses, McArthur, McCarthy, Di Santo, Rodallega.
