Evian slipped to the bottom of the Ligue 1 table as a Nelson Oliveira brace sealed a 2-1 win for Rennes.
The Portuguese netted from the penalty spot after 11 minutes and doubled the visitors' lead 11 minutes before the break.
Kevin Berigaud got a goal back for Evian four minutes into the second half but they could not get the equaliser that would have kept them off the foot of the table.
Oliveira had his first after Youssouf Sabaly fouled Jonathan Pitroipa in the penalty area and the Benfica loanee sent Bertrand Laquait the wrong way with his spot kick.
Evian could have been level just four minutes later as Berigaud surged down the left and found Marco Ruben but his shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Benoit Costil.
Jean Makoun then found Mevlut Erding and he should have grabbed a second for Rennes but he fired his shot wide.
Rennes were well on top and just before the half time Julien Feret's free-kick picked out Kevin Theophile-Catherine who hit a sweet volley but saw it come back off the crossbar.
In the 34th minute the visitors had the second goal their dominance deserved as Feret set off on a mazy run and found Oliveira who drilled home from the edge of the penalty area with the help of a small deflection.
But the deficit was reduced shortly after the break as Modou Sougou crossed the ball to Berigaud who fired home an unstoppable volley.
And just four minutes later the home side were almost level with Sougou finding space in the box but Costil was equal to his effort.
The Senegalese was causing all sorts of trouble for Rennes and brought a brilliant save from Costil as he got his head on a Cedric Barbosa cross but the equaliser was not to come.
