Evian were unable to hold on to an early lead at the Parc des Sports as they drew their first Ligue 1 match of the season 1-1 against Sochaux.
Fabrice Ehret put the home side ahead in the fourth minute and Evian kept the visitors at bay for 50 minutes before Roy Contout netted the equaliser.
Evian, who had to fight to preserve their top-flight status last season, kicked off the new campaign in perfect style when Ehret put them ahead with less than five minutes on the clock.
Cedric Barbosa took a free-kick from just outside of the penalty area and sent the ball into the box, where Ehret headed past Sochaux goalkeeper Simon Pouplin.
The visitors almost equalised 10 minutes later but Bertrand Laquait kept them at bay with an excellent relfex save to deny Contout's close range header.
Ehret nearly added to his early score moments later but for a Pouplin save, before the Sochaux stopper denied Kevin Berigaud's volley from a corner in the 24th minute.
After the break, Sochaux defender Sebastien Corchia stopped another Evian chance when he raced back to clear Kevin Berigaud's shot on the line.
However, the visitors did not have to wait long for the equaliser, as Contout scored two minutes later when Ryad Boudebouz passed from the edge of the area to find the midfielder, who curled the ball past Laquait.
Both sides other chances to score after that but none clear-cut enough to prove decisive.
