Robbie Kruse gave Dusseldorf the lead after four minutes and Joselu equalised in the 39th minute.
The visitors then had saw Marvin Compper sent off in the 51st minute but held on for the draw.
Hoffenheim continued their recent good run by picking up at least a point in three of their last four games while Dusseldorf ended a four-match losing streak.
Dusseldorf grabbed the lead after just four minutes from a set piece as Hoffenheim keeper Tim Wiese misjudged Ronny Garbuschewski's free-kick from the right side and Kruse headed home from six yards out.
It was the 24th goal Wiese conceded this season in his eight appearances.
Dusseldorf were close to doubling the lead in the 33rd minute but Garbuschewski's long blast went just over the crossbar.
Hoffenheim equalised in the 39th minute when Andreas Beck's cross from the right reached the far post where Joselu's header hit Dusseldorf's Tobias Levels on the head and the ball went just inside the left post.
Hoffenheim saw a man sent off six minutes after the restart as Compper was booked for a second time within four minutes.
Hoffenheim had a counter-attack chance in the 61st minute when Joselu snatched the ball from Johannes van den Bergh and raced around two defenders before striking his shot against the post.
