Gills keep Rovers in the mire

Image: Cody McDonald: Bagged Gillingham's second goal

Bradley Dack and Cody McDonald found the net as Gillingham beat fellow stragglers Tranmere 2-0 to ease their relegation fears.

Dack got the ball rolling as he fired home a brilliant volley from a deep Joe Martin cross 12 minutes after coming on as a substitute in the 66th minute before McDonald sealed the victory in stoppage time. McDonald's effort came in fortuitous circumstances after Tranmere goalkeeper Owain Fon Williams was caught out after coming forward for a corner, which was quickly cleared by the Gills. Fon Williams had earlier looked like earning Tranmere, still outside the relegation places by just two points, a draw as he produced several good saves to keep the Gills at bay. He thwarted McDonald on three occasions and tipped Adebayo Akinfenwa's powerful header over the crossbar, while Jake Cassidy fired wide in what was Rovers' best chance of the first half. Tranmere dominated after the break and Gills goalkeeper Stuart Nelson did well to save Jason Koumas' 20-yard volley and was tested by John-Louis Akpa Akpro's curling shot. Cassidy had gone close to opening the scoring for Tranmere with a brilliant solo effort before Gillingham hit Rovers through Dack and then McDonald.
