It's all over! Argentina have laid down a marker of sorts here. Their attacking play was scintillating at times and they are comfortable winners against an unadventurous Greece. Samaras missed a guilt-edge chance early in the second half and the 2004 European champions are heading home. Mexico await Maradona's men in Jo'burg. Keep it here for reports and reaction!
You can say what you want about Maradona but one thing is for sure, he knows how to celebrate! Just imagine if they win the whole thing!
Messi's fierce shot was saved well by Tzorvas but the rebound fell straight to Palermo who calmly slotted home. Maradona is delighted!!
Despite the barrage of Argentina pressure, Greece have defended fantastically well here to keep it at 1-0
Brilliant from Messi and Argentina! Quick one-touch passing and a turn of pace saw the Barcelona superstar bear down on goal. He jinked inside the area and unleashed a ferocious left-footed shot. The keeper was beaten but his effort cannoned back off the post. So, so unlucky.
Messi thinks he's through but a wonderful last-gasp tackle by Spyropoulos saves an almost certain goal
Well i'd be lying if I said it hasn't been coming. Demichelis met a dangerous corner, his initial header was blocked by team-mate Milito but he lashed in the rebound emphatically!
Greece are trying to soak up the pressure and play on the break. It's a dangerous game though and a mix-up in the box between keeper and defender gifts Argentina a corner...
Another double save from Tzorvas! Messi's free-kick sent him sprawling across his goal and from the resulting corner Bolatti headed straight at him from close range!
I would like to think Maradona is thinking about resting some of his stars now... Greece are very physical and the last thing Argentina will want is a serious injury when they are virtually through
Di Maria has been bright since coming on some five minutes ago. Heard some rave reviews about him also...
Huge appeals for a penalty from Argentina are waved away. Kyrgiakos had a huge chunk of Milito's shirt inside the box and went down - remarkably the decision went against the Inter frontman!
All Argentina now. Maxi turns his man and shoots from distance. It was heading goalwards before cannoning into a white shirt
We need a bit more ambition from Greece now. Their gamplan worked fine for the first half but they must up the ante now. Unfortunately it's hard when your striker can't shoot for toffee though!
More good work from Rodriguez. This time he charges forward and lets fly with a fizzing right-footed drive which skims wide
Half chance for Argentina and Milito. The impressive Rodriguez cut inside and delivered a curling cross which was just too high for the onrushing Milito. Dangerous move
Double change for Greece, and it looks like both are enforced due to injuries. Ninis is on for Katsouranis and Patsatzoglou replaces Torosidis
Pretty scrappy here at the moment - both side's giving the ball away far too easily. Tevez is warming up...
As impressive as Argentina have been on the ball and going forward, they have looked pretty shaky in defence
Huge chance goes begging for Greece!! Samaras could be left to rue this. A quick break leaves him one-on-one with Demichelis. He shoots but it is blocked straight back to him. He tries again, this time with keeper Romero on the floor, however he drags his shot wide when perhaps it was easier to score. Huge moment.
Surprise change from Greece coach Otto Rehhagel at half-time as playmaker Karagounis is replaced by left-back Spyropoulos...
It will be interesting to see if either side make any changes at the break. Argentina have plenty of firepower with Tevez, Higuain et al...
It's been a lively half, Greece have spoilt it a little with their theatrics though. Keep it here for second half updates...
Nothing materialises from the set-piece and we are all-square at the break. Greece need a goal in the next 45 to progress while Argentina are playing Mexico in the last 16 as it stands
Fine double save from Tzorvas keeps Greece level. First the Greek stopper keeps out Maxi and then Messi brings the best out of him with a dipping, curling effort from distance. Corner...
Argentina bomb forward in numbers looking for an opener before half-time. Maxi slips in Aguero but he is hounded out just before he can get a shot away
Superb delivery from Karagounis but goalkeeper Romero dives out with a brave two-fisted punch to clear
Little to report this end. Messi went on a mazy dribble but nothing developed. Elsewhere, Greece continue to roll around on the floor under minimal contact
An Argentina corner causes chaos in the Greece box before they scramble it clear. Half time can't come soon enough!!
Slight delay in play after Papadopoulos feigns an injury. Not cool tactics, but completely expected by the Greeks
Fantastic last-ditch block saves Greece! Milito's low cross was only palmed away by Tzorvas straight into the path of Aguero, who's shot was sailing in but Tziolis stuck out a leg and made a goal-saving block
Ohh so close for Greece. Karagounis' chipped throughball was almost latched onto by Samaras who would have been clean through
Greece will need a lot of luck if they are to escape from here with a draw. Argentina have been camped inside their half and, despite not creating too many clear cut chances as yet, i'm sure they will.
Papastathopoulos is fortunate not to receive a caution when he cynically chops down Messi. The Argentina players surround the referee gesturing for him to produce a card. He deserved one, but I don't like to see that
It's hard to tell whether news of Nigeria's goal has filtered through to the Greek playing and coaching staff. Would they want to know it would it make them more nervous??
Veron lets fly from the edge of the box after the resulting corner. Plenty of power and Tzorvas has to palm it over
First shot on goal arrives and great play by Aguero! He weaves through the Greek defence and his left-footed effort is beaten away for a corner by a diving Tzorvas
Drama on the pitch as Demichelis and Samaras both hit the deck after a 50-50. Play stops with Samaras penalised. A bit of handbags follows but the referee is in quickly to stop anything materialising
A decent break from Greece back here. Samaras sprints into the box and only a sliding tackle stops him striking towards goal
Nigeria 1-0 South Korea!! A lifeline for Greece over in Durban as Kalu Uche puts Nigeria ahead. If it stays like this Greece are through!!
Papastathopoulos, unfortunately for me and my fingers, is man-marking Messi tonight by the looks of it. All the best my son...
Messi bursts into life for the first time tonight - sharing a one-two with Aguero and driving towards the box. Only a well-timed tackle by Papastathopoulos stopped him
Veron is perplexed when referee Irmatov penalises him in midfield. It was a bit of a 'stamp tackle' and I can see why he gave it
The training match continues... I'm looking forward to watching a bit of Aguero tonight. Not seen much of him but he is some talent by all accounts
Liam Ferguson has been in touch. He says: "Hi Joe, I would like to see an upset here but I think Maradona & co will be too strong for them, I am expecting Argentina to cruise this 4-0 or 5-0 and Messi to show why he is the worlds greatest player."
The Argies have been one of if not the strongest team i've seen in the competition so far. Bad news for backers of Higuain for the Golden Boot though as he is on the bench
The players are going through their last-minute warm-ups out on the pitch. We are around 10 minutes from kick-off ladies and gents
Argentina need just one point to top Group B while Greece, well, they can progress with a draw should Nigeria beat South Korea
Lionel Messi will become Argentina's youngest World Cup captain after Maradona handed him the responsibility of leading his country for the first time two days before his 23rd birthday.

They are in. And the maverick that is Maradona has not been afraid to ring the changes to his virtually-qualified side.
