Hartlepool and Walsall shared the spoils following an entertaining 2-2 draw at Victoria Park in which both teams needed to stage fightbacks to earn a point in a game that could have gone either way.
Walsall took the lead with their first attack. Sofiene Zaaboub floated in a high cross from the left for Troy Deeney to meet the ball as it landed and plant a right-foot volley into the corner of the net from 10 yards.
The home team struggled to get back into the game and found it difficult to create chances as Walsall took a firm grip on things.
But Hartlepool got a break after 36 minutes when Matty Robson crossed low from the left and from almost on the goal-line defender Anthony Gerrard sliced his attempted clearance into the roof of his own net.
After a slow start to the second half, Hartlepool took the lead after 64 minutes, top scorer Joel Porter sliding his shot home after an awful goal-kick from Clayton Ince landed at his feet.
But Walsall levelled with eight minutes left, Alex Nicholls crossing high from the right for sub Sam Williams, on loan from Aston Villa, to head in from close range.
