Chairboys leave Pools' standing

Hartlepool remain without a win in League Two this season after a 2-1 home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

Substitute Max Kretzschmar scored two second-half goals at the Chairboys enjoyed their first away win of the campaign. Home sub James Poole netted Pools' first league goal of the season but it was too little, too late. Hartlepool, who scored five in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in midweek against Bradford, had the first chance after 17 minutes when Andy Monkhouse's shot was blocked. They went close again 10 minutes later from a frantic goalmouth scramble as midfielder Billy Knott cleared a Christian Burgess shot off the line. Wycombe's first opening came after 40 minutes when a teasing ball from the left by Sam Wood evaded the on-rushing Steven Craig. But the half-time introduction of Kretzschmar changed the game. He sent over a corner after 47 minutes which Craig headed over before opening the scoring himself two minutes later - the midfielder cracking a fine low finish into the bottom corner of the net from 25 yards. Home goalkeeper Scott Flinders saved well from Stuart Lewis before Kretzschmar struck again. This time, after Pools lost possession, the Chairboys broke away and the substitute took Knott's pass and confidently clipped his finish past Flinders. Hartlepool finally got on the scoresheet when Poole headed in from close range.
