Jo's late strike ensured Man City got the point they needed to finish top of Europa League's Group A after a 1-1 draw with Juventus.

Blues come from behind to ensure seeding for knock-out stage

Jo's late strike ensured Manchester City got the point they needed to finish top of Group A and be seeded for the Europa League's last 32. The Brazilian missed a two-yard tap-in in just the second minute but made amends with a well-taken strike in the 76th minute to cancel out Nicolo Giannetti's opener for Juventus on the stroke of half-time. The game had been billed as a dead rubber with City having already booked their place in the knock-out stage while Juve were already out. But top spot was still up for grabs and Lech Poznan were set to be group winners until Jo struck to ensure City avoid the sides that come into the competition from the Champions League.

Nine changes

City manager Roberto Mancini made nine changes to his side, with only Jerome Boateng and Jo retaining their place following Saturday's 3-1 win at West Ham, while Micah Richards was handed the captain's armband. Jo was partnered up front by 19-year-old Alex Nimely, handed his first senior start by Mancini, and Jo should have given the visitors the lead when Richards raced forward and squared for the Brazilian, who failed to turn the ball into an open net as it went to safety off his left heel. Juve again found themselves on the back foot two minutes later when James Milner unsuccessfully appealed for a penalty for handball after his cross struck Alessandro Del Piero in the area. The Italian giants responded in the 11th minute when Del Piero broke into the area and young City defender Dedryck Boyata was perfectly positioned to make the clearance. The home side were anxious to finish the campaign with a victory after five successive draws and Del Piero cut inside in the 15th minute but his finish was poor, going high over the crossbar. City's 1,500 travelling fans were in good voice despite the game becoming scrappy, with passes going astray on both sides on a freezing night in Turin. City, however, were looking the more threatening going forward with both Adam Johnson and Milner seeing plenty of the ball.
Deadlock broken
Mancini then saw City go behind in the 43rd minute as Del Piero attacked right-back Richards and checked back on the byline to square for young striker partner Giannetti, who marked his first Juve start by nipping in front of Boyata to poke the ball past Shay Given from close range. City pushed forward at the start of the second half and Jo flicked in a header that went narrowly wide of the post in the 46th minute and although he found the net four minutes later from Johnson's through-ball, the flag went up for offside. Jo then returned the favour, crossing for Johnson to cut inside his man only to see his shot blocked by Zdenek Grygera. Juve continued to look dangerous on the counter-attack and Serbian winger Milos Krasic forced Given to tip over his 20-yard strike in the 56th minute, before making way moments later. Back came City and they had another appeal for a penalty turned down in the 58th minute when Giorgio Chiellini appeared to handle a shot from Nimely, who was also replaced shortly after by Pablo Zabaleta. The Argentina international played in a defensive midfield role with Milner told to push further on in support of Jo, and Milner raced forward in the 67th minute but sent his effort wide of the target from a good position. City created another half-chance in the 75th minute when Johnson skipped to the byline and picked out fellow England winger Wright-Phillips, who attempted an ambitious bicycle kick that went high over the crossbar. The Blues earned a deserved draw a minute later, though, with Johnson cutting in from the right and playing it into Jo's feet, with the Brazilian taking a touch and turning in the box before firing low past former Arsenal keeper Alex Manninger.
