Striker seals opening day win

A penalty from Adam Boyd on the stroke of half-time gave Leyton Orient the perfect start to the new season as they beat League One newcomers Hereford 2-1 at Brisbane Road. The Bulls broke the deadlock in the 14th minute when Dean Beckwith was the first to react to a left-wing corner from Simon Johnson and his effort took a deflection on its way past goalkeeper Glenn Morris. JJ Melligan was the catalyst to give the Os their half-time lead as his 22nd-minute cross from the right by-line eluded goalkeeper Darren Randolph under pressure from Boyd, allowing the ball to creep over the line. Then, with the clock running down, Melligan crossed from the right once more and Richard Rose was adjudged to have handled in the penalty area allowing Boyd to step forward and place the ball inside the left-hand post from the resulting spot-kick.
