NGOG! Ngog gets a brace with a lovely finish at the Kop end. He just loves this competition, that's his fifth in the Europa League.
Ecclestone is pulled back by Eder who receives a caution. There will be three minutes of added time.
Eccleston does well with his first involvement but Steaua eventually clear the cross from Konchesky.
Babel finds himself in loads of space but he dawdles, before whipping in a really good cross towards Ngog. Steaua deal with it but it's a corner.
Space opens up for the dangerous Stancu but his shot from distance is a tame one and Reina makes a comfortable save.
By the way, prediction of the night goes to Adam Esposito who went for a 2-1 Liverpool win with Cole and Ngog scoring! Spot on so far Adam. Your prize is, er, well there is no prize - but it was a cracking prediction!
Maxi's corner is whipped in and Kyrgiakos causes havoc once more, but this time Steaua clear their lines without conceding a penalty.
Babel does well down the left this time but again his delivery isn't the best. Yet another back-heel - this time from Konchesky - doesn't quite come off. Liverpool well on top now.
Babel and Konchesky combine down the Liverpool left but the former's cross is a poor one despite him having bags of time.
Meireles chips a ball to Maxi who in turn chests one off to Babel. The Dutch player smashes a volley goalwards but it's blocked.
Cole does really well to fend of the attentions of several Steaua defenders and he spots Maxi in space on the right. The Argentine's delivery is too close to Tatarusanu though.
Cole and Babel combine on the left to set up a chance for Spearing but his shot is a weak one in front of the Kop end.
The referee blows his whistle to signal the start of the break and it's 1-1 at half-time thanks to Cole's first minute opener and Tanase's equaliser. Join us soon for the second half.
Cole gives away a free-kick near the Steaua penalty area. Just the one minute of added time at the end of the first half.
Maxi is almost through but Octavian Abruden makes sure that doesn't happen. Yellow card for the defender.
Liverpool keep the ball at the back as they look to mount another attack. Eventually Konchesky is set free down the left but he fails to keep the ball in play.
Meireles feeds Babel with a slick pass but the Dutch winger can only pass it into the keeper's arms.
Babel loses the ball but then works hard to get it back. Maxi comes off the right flank to offer support and the pair link well together. After a throw-in Maxi tests Tatarusanu with a long-range effort.
Nice build-up play from Liverpool with Cole doing well inside the Steaua box. It eventually falls for Babel who forces Steaua keeper Ciprian Tatarusanu into a save.
Kelly intercepts the ball on the edge of his own box and punts a clearance into the opposition half.
Maxi does well down the Liverpool right but Kelly's cross is blocked when the Reds had numbers in the box.
Steaua counter-attack with verve but Spearing halts them this time. The away side are looking dangerous whenever Liverpool lose the ball.
Meireles blocks another cross from Nikolita. It's a very even game now after Liverpool bossed the opening 10 minutes.
Reina is forced into a point-blank save after more great work from Stancu but the linesman's spotted an offside. It was, but Steaua are very much growing in confidence.
Steaua are offering a threat now they have confidence and Kyrgiakos is forced to block another effort from Tanese.
Agger brings the ball out of defence for Liverpool as the home team look to assert themselves quickly following the equaliser.
TANESE! Cristian Tanese latches on to a decent through ball from Bogdan Stancu and prods the ball past Reina. Nice finish. 1-1.
Raul Meireles is keeping things ticking along nicely. He shows a tidy touch inside the centre circle as Liverpool retain possession.
Nice build up play from Liverpool involving Spearing and Cole. Maxi tries to poke a ball over the top but Steaua deal with it well.
Jay Spearing collects the ball 25 yards out and lets fly, but it's just too high and over the goal at the Anfield Road end. Good strike though.
Daniel Agger with the header from the corner, but it's blocked by Steaua defenders and the Romanians clear their lines.
COLE! After 28 seconds Joe Cole gets free and steers it into the bottom corner. Lovely finish. What a start!
And they're off. Steaua Bucharest, playing in bright yellow with dark blue shoulder trim, get us under way.
You'll Never Walk Alone is played over the Anfield tannoy as the two teams appear from the tunnel. They'll be kicking off shortly...
Jorge Garcia: "Good idea to rest the two front men. I would like to see if we can get Pacheco in there aswell. I believe after this season with Roy, Babel should not be whining like a lil girl about him not getting any playing time. He gets to start today with a good partner in Ngog, so show the KOP the magic that you produced in the U17 World Cups in Peru."
Adam Esposito: "Totally agree with resting Torres and Gerrard. We need to start to learn to play without them. I think we have a strong team and at home will push for the win. Not sure about Steaua's form at the moment but i think it should be 2-0 or 2-1. Ngog and Cole to score! YNWA!"
Now a Liverpool fan enters the fray. I give you Stuart Morgan: "I think a big win would be great tonight to raise confidence for Sunday, I would like to see some of the new signings gelling a bit tonight and show us what they can do! Torres and Gerrard rested is a good idea on the whole they are both needed for Sunday."
Curiously, the first email to drop in tonight is from a Manchester United fan. Stefan says: "No Torres or Gerrard - 2-1 Steaua. Looking forward to the match on Sunday. Neither team in good form should be good. From An Optimistic Red Devil."
So Liverpool fans, what do you reckon? Happy with no Torres or Gerrard tonight? I guess there is a pretty big game over at Old Trafford on Sunday to consider.
If you fancy a flutter on tonight's game be sure to check out the team news below. Ryan Babel appears to be lining up as a conventional centre forward so you may be tempted by the 4/1 Sky Bet offer about him to open the scoring. The Leeds-based firm also go 4/11 Liverpool, 7/2 the draw and 8/1 Steaua.
And here's Steaua Bucharest: Tatarusanu, Emeghara, Abrudan, Geraldo, Latovlevici, Radut, Angelov, Bicfalvi, Tanase, Stancu, Kapetanos. Subs: Lungu, Gardos, Nicolita, Gomes, Surdu, Eder, Apostol.
First up here's the Liverpool side: Reina, Kelly, Kyrgiakos, Agger, Konchesky, Spearing, Meireles, Maxi, Cole, Babel, Ngog. Subs: Jones, Johnson, Pacheco, Lucas, Carragher, Shelvey, Eccleston.
