Manchester City are grateful for a penalty save from Hart and goals from Yaya Toure and Tevez as a 2-0 win over Chelsea allows the defending Premier League champions to claw back some ground in the title race by reducing the gap at the top to Manchester United. Stay with us for the full match report and all the post-game reaction from players and managers.
Silva has also had a very good game and he is offered a late breather when being replaced by Lescott.
ADDED TIME: There will be a minimum of four minutes added time before the final whistle. Nasri comes on for the excellent Aguero.
Nastasic is down and receiving treatment after a collision with Ramires, who had clumsily overrun the ball.
City are now running down the clock. They are taking their time over any set-pieces. Chelsea look like they know they are beaten.
City will deserve this win. They have been the better side and could have taken the lead in the first half. Hart deserves credit, though. His penalty save after giving away the foul acted as a platform.
That should be enough for City unless something remarkable happens. Aguero carried the ball down the left and then, via Silva, it was played to Tevez around 25 yards from goal. With Cahill and Ivanovic standing off, Tevez took up the offer to smash a wonderful right-footed effort past Cech and into the top corner.
Chelsea have been disappointing as an attacking force today. Benitez's tactics have not been convincing.
Cech takes bit of a risk against Aguero with the ball at his feet after collecting a throw-in from Cahill before the goalkeeper then backheels the ball to his team-mate.
City look like they are happy to play a conservative game for the rest of the match and simply try to hit Chelsea on the counter-attack. They are in no hurry.
Nice build-up from Chelsea into the penalty area but then Mata uncharacteristically puts too much power on his first-time ball to Oscar and it rolls out for a goal-kick.
Chelsea suddenly have City pinned back. But Moses' attempted pass to Ivanovic is a bad decision and it goes out for a goal-kick.
Ivanovic cuts into the City box from the right but he is crowded out as he looks for room to shoot on his left foot.
Yaya Toure spreads the ball to the right and then looks for a give-and-go with Milner in the penalty area. But the African over hits his return pass and it is out for a goal-kick.
Luiz carries the ball over the halfway line but he has his arms outstretched and is asking for a pass option from his team-mates. As he hesitates, it allows Silva to get back and tackle.
City play another long pass down the inside channels towards Aguero. But the striker went too early and ran offside.
City, with their lead, look the more composed team on the ball as the game heads into the remaining 20 minutes. Chelsea have had problems getting the ball to Ba for the entire match.
Chelsea take their corner and Ivanovic competes to win the header. But the ball was always behind the centre-back and he cannot make a decent connection.
City's fans are now in full voice. If their team can hang on to this lead, they will reduce the deficit in the title race with Manchester United back to 12 points.
Yaya Toure breaks the deadlock. He cuts into from the left of the penalty area and goes past some very half-hearted defending from Mikel. Cahill then fails to close down Toure quickly enough and the City midfield's shot deflects off the defenders heel on its way inside the far post.
Chelsea break on City and have a two-on-one situation in Ivanovic and Ramires against Kolo Toure. But, having been played in by Ivanovic, Ramires checks his run and is then blocked by Toure before going to ground, dramatically looking for a penalty.
This is now developing into an end-to-end game. Both sides are opening up and looking for a winner in the remaining half-an-hour.
Mata wants a free-kick on the edge of the City box after skipping past Clichy with an excellent piece of skill. Mata had a case. Clichy was pulling him back.
Aguero again bursts through the middle of the pitch after losing Cahill. He collects Milner's pass but Cech is off his line quickly and forces the Argentine to take his shot quickly. Aguero lobs his shot over the crossbar and onto the roof of the netting.
Silva plays a long pass through to Aguero, who controls the ball superbly on his head. He loses Cahill temporarily but the Chelsea centre-back, who is having a good game, recovers to block Aguero's shot inside the penalty area.
Rodwell is off and is replaced by Tevez. It looks like Tevez is going up front by himself and Aguero is moving out to the left.
From the resulting corner, Hart is again forced to make a save. Could those two saves from their goalkeeper give City the inspiration to go forward and find a winner?
Brilliant save from Hart. He dives low to his bottom right-hand corner and deny Lampard's spot-kick. Fantastic stop from the City goalkeeper.
Kolo Toure was struggling to deal with Ba at a through ball and Hart rushed from his goal to bring down the Chelsea striker in a tangle of legs. Correct decision. Lampard to take the penalty.
Silva has room down the left as City continue to target their attacks against Ivanovic. Silva crosses and finds Aguero who is only just wide when reaching to volley.
Rodwell seems to be enjoying his position in a more advanced role since swapping with Yaya Toure. Cahill has to head clear from a cross which was heading for Rodwell.
Lampard sends a long ball bouncing forward towards Ba but Kolo Toure hooks a clearance away from goal.
It has been two closely-matched teams but City have had the better chances. Rodwell and Nastasic forced saves from Cech at corners. But a draw will be no good for the home team, who want to defend their title. Chelsea need to get better service to Ba. Hazard has been particularly disappointing.
Chelsea burst into the City box through Ramires down the right but Clichy holds him up before tackling in a slightly messy fashion, however, it got the job done.
Hazard's free-kick is miserable. He scuffs the ball and it is whacked clear by the first line of City defenders. There are then ironic cheers from the City fans as Ba is adjudged to have fouled Milner at the City byline.
Zabaleta pays the price for repeated foul play when earning a booking for a mistimed sliding challenge on Cole. Free-kick to Chelsea on the left and close to the penalty area.
Corner to City on the right after Cech takes no chances in tipping a Rodwell 25-yarder over the crossbar. Silva's corners have been fantastic and again he finds a team-mate in the six-yard box. Rodwell jumps above Mikel but heads straight at Cech.
Corner to Chelsea on the right but it is wasted in what is a set-piece that really epitomises the first half.
Kolo Toure rightfully booked for a trip on Mata, who had played a pass and was looking to spin in behind the City centre-back.
With good timing, City again get in down the left. Aguero's cross drops deep to Zabaleta on the edge of the box. The City captain takes on a first-time volley and Cahill bravely heads the ball away.
This has been a scrappy game. Neither side have been able to find any real momentum in their passing. City have looked the most dangerous when attacking on the left.
Ramires collects his eighth booking of the season for a blatant trip on Yaya Toure. Ramires knew what he was doing and caught Toure on the knee. Toure is hobbling as a result.
Milner attempts to play a through ball to Aguero but Cole intercepts. Chelsea move forward and Mata attempts to skip his way past Kolo Toure. But the centre-back blocks the ball.
Chelsea have really struggled to get Ba in to the game. He has looked an isolated figure at times and has been forced to work on long balls, which he has done his best to hold up.
It looks like Rodwell and Yaya Toure have swapped roles for a bit. Rodwell is now in a more advanced position and Toure has dropped a bit deeper.
Silva's corner is again excellent and is taken just off the head of Rodwell, who would sure have scored from six yards.
Yaya Toure wins a corner from Cole after carrying the ball up City's right side. That was a mismatch in power but a good battle for pace.
Clichy teases a good cross from the left to the edge of the six-yard box. Rodwell heads over the bar after having the advantage of a run up against Luiz, who is left in a heap on the floor.
Possession has be 50-50 after half-an-hour in a reflection of what is a very even game between two very similar teams.
City fans do no think they are getting the rub of the green from referee Marriner as Nastasic is adjudged to have climbed over Ba at a header.
After Yaya Toure went in a little too strongly on Ramires, Benitez tales on a ludicrously ambitious free-kick from at least 35 yards. He blazes the ball high over the crossbar.
Mata's free-kick is a waste. He attempts to lob the ball into the City box but it is headed away by the first line of defenders on the 18-yard line.
Free-kick to Chelsea wide on the left after Zabaleta is adjudged to have fouled Hazard. Replays show there was not contact between Zabaleta and Hazard before the Chelsea player went to ground.
In a reverse of rolls, Silva is back in his own penalty area to tackle and clear against Cahill, who found himself up the field in a Chelsea attack.
This has been a good spell for City. Yaya Toure is playing in his more traditional, advanced position and is looking a threat whenever the ball comes forward in central areas.
Again City come down the left. But Silva is off balance when he attempts to cross on the swivel and his delivery into the box drifts behind for a goal-kick.
City are having a lot of joy when attacking down the left. Aguero is drifting out to that side of the pitch and is causing problems. Clichy is also attacking with freedom down that flank.
Rodwell leaves Ramires in a heap with a wild challenge inside the City half. Rodwell took the ball but his sliding tackle was with too much force for the liking of referee Marriner.
Cahill makes another great block from the corner. City took the corner short and Rodwell's shot on the turn was blocked by Cahill from eight yards out. But Chelsea then give the ball away in midfield and City break. Silva plays in Aguero but the Argentine overruns the ball in his one-on-one with Cech and it is out for a goal-kick.
Cahill makes a vital interception as he loops a Yaya Toure shot over the crossbar for a corner. Silva had found Toure with a superb pass.
Zabaleta is lucky to get away with a poor cross-field ball, which goes straight to Ramires but the Brazilian heads the ball back to City.
Silva's delivery is perfectly to the edge of the six-yard box. Nastasic meets the ball but gets his timing a little bit wrong and he heads the ball into the ground before Cech can palm away. Comfortable save.
A Ramires cross from the right causes a bit of panic in the City box but it goes all the way to the far side of the penalty area, where Hazard collects the ball and the move eventually breaks down.
Aguero is not happy to have been adjudged to have jumped with an arm in to Ivanovic's head. Free-kick to Chelsea just inside the City half.
Mata brings Chelsea forward down the left. Ba's cross is then blocked by Rodwell. But Chelsea remain on the attack. Lampard's cross is dangerous and City do well to defend on the edge of their own six-yard box.
Yaya Toure has room to cross from the left but he does not really have any options and his whacked delivery misses any team-mates.
It has all been a bit cagey in these opening exchanges. These two teams are closely matched, as was the case in their 0-0 draw at Stamford Bridge in November.
Mata's delivery from the corner is very disappointing and Zabaleta, unchallenged, can head clear at the near post.
From a City attack, Aguero's cross is a bit aimless and Chelsea can counter-attack. Ba wins a corner on the left from Kolo Toure.
Chelsea build their first real attack when Cole carries the ball forward. But City are back and in a good shape to force their visitors back to Cech.
Given all the changes Benitez has made, it is perhaps understandable Chelsea are looking a little bit rusty in these opening minutes. Aguero goes on a run into the Chelsea box before Cech clears with a long kick down field.
Milner's inswinging corner is headed clear by Ba at the near post. City remain on the attack but Milner then runs the ball out for a throw-in to Chelsea.
Corner to City on the left as Ivanovic is forced to put the ball behind when defending against Aguero.
Yaya Toure had tried to place that effort with his side foot when he might have been better going for power.
Cech has to make an early save from a tame 20-yard Kolo Toure effort following City's build-up from a throw-in on the right.
Here come the teams. Captains Zabaleta and Lampard lead City and Chelsea out of the tunnel at the Etihad Stadium.
Kick-off is just minutes away. Anything less than a win today will surely leave City's hopes of defending their title in tatters. But Chelsea have eyes on second place and are putting Roberto Mancini's men under pressure.
City have won only one of their last four Premier League matches against Chelsea. Chelsea won 10 of their first 12 Premier League away games against City but have lost the last three in a row.
Khaled Barakat says: "'Frank Lampard has scored 11 goals in his 13 Premier League starts for Chelsea this season.' The reason Chelsea have been able to play with one up front for so many years is because they have a player who can score more goals form midfield than most strikers anyway."
If you have joined us late, here is a full round-up of all the team news. Torres and Terry are back on the bench as Chelsea meet champions City in a critical Premier League clash. Interim manager Benitez makes six changes in all with striker Ba, veteran Lampard and left-back Cole among those to return. Second-placed City - 15 points behind leaders Manchester United and just four ahead of Chelsea after a month without a league win - are again missing captain Kompany. Rodwell starts in midfield with Aguero alone up front.
Having been given the nod over Fernando Torres, Demba Ba is a 7/1 price boost with Sky Bet (from 13/2) to open the scoring against City, who are even money to take a much-needed win. Sergio Aguero could be the man to inspire them, and he is 35/1 to score first and lead his side to a 2-0 victory. You can back both Ba and Aguero to net at any time at 13/2.
Phil says: "Nice to see Benitez has dropped Fernando Torrid, despite saying what a wonderful job he does for the team!!"
Jack Evans says: What is Benitez doing playing Luiz at centre back? Should be in midfield next to Lampard, he's been solid there this season."
Duncan McNiven says: "I think we are for a cracker today with a few goals. I'm a neutral (Liverpool) but I fancy Chelsea to claim all points today and tighten it up in the battle for second spot. Man United uncatchable of course. Prediction? 3-2 Chelsea!"
Cole will play his 300th game for Chelsea today but, as he said he would, interim boss Rafa Benitez has made several changes to his team with Terry among the players back on the bench. What do you make of the line-ups? How will this game unfold?
Niall Griffiths says: "That Man City defence of Toure and Nastasic is there for the taking. If Hazard and Oscar turn up, it's gonna be tough for City."
Cech, Ivanovic, Cahill, Luiz, Cole, Mikel, Lampard (C), Ramirez, Mata, Hazard, Ba. Subs: Turnbull, Azpilicueta, Terry, Bertrand, Oscar, Moses, Torres.
Akshet Shetty says: "I think it will be a lot closer than people think. Oscar will be the man to watch. Ever since that England game, he has been on fire. City's threat will come through Yaya Toure and Silva. Chelsea's defence will struggle to keep a clean sheet here. 2-2."
Hart, Zabaleta (C), Kolo Toure, Nastasic, Clichy, Garcia, Milner, Rodwell, Silva, Yaya Toure, Aguero. Subs: Pantilimon, Lescott, Kolarov, Nasri, Sinclair, Tevez, Dzeko.
