All over, and City run out quite comfortable winners in the end. Everton faded in the second half after matching their opponents in the first. City well in control by the end.
Lovely interplay from Nasri and Toure sees the France midfielder in on goal, but Howard stays big and makes a good block.
Fernandinho loses the ball in midfield, but Everton can't capitalise as Kone drills his shot straight at Hart.
Getting silly now with these bookings. Run-of-the-mill foul by Fernandinho on Coleman in the centre circle leads to yet another caution.
Naismith hauls down the counter-attacking Toure and joins the lengthening list of names in Moss' notebook.
Nasri skips through a couple of challenges but then overhits an attempted pass for Negredo. Goal-kick.
Chance for Fernandinho to get a show away, but he takes an extra touch and allows the Everton defence to smother his shot.
Glorious move from City needed only a finishing touch. Negredo sends a raking left-to-right crossfield ball out to Silva on the right. He slips in Zabaleta, who fires the ball across goal. No-one there to finish it, but City starting to enjoy themselves now.
Surprisingly, given the chasing Man City had midweek, it's Everton who look the more weary side here. Negredo played in behind a square back four, and he hammers a shot goalwards that Howard parries.
Almost a booking per foul now as the indiscretions mount up. Coleman into the book now for a late foul on Silva.
Final change for City as Aguero makes way for Nasri. Will leave the field thinking he's got two goals, but will soon discover it's only one.
Free-kick is half-cleared, but McCarthy helps it back into the box. Distin gets his head to it, but there's no power on it and Hart makes a comfortable save.
Cards starting to mount up now as Zabaleta goes into the book for a late tackle on the overlapping Baines.
Everton have faded quite badly as an attacking force in this second half. Look short of ideas now as another break comes to nothing.
Negredo brilliantly picked out, and the Spain striker takes the ball down beautifully but is smartly tackled by McCarthy as he cuts back on to his right foot.
Lovely run from Coleman takes him past Toure and into the penalty area. Could go for goal himself, but squares it for Naismith who fluffs his shot.
The penalty came back off the post and went in off the back of Howard's head. Will go down as a Howard own goal.
OWN GOAL - HOWARD. Aguero's spot-kick almost kept out by Howard down low to his left, but the ball squirms inside the post and City have a two-goal cushion.
Coleman gives Zabaleta the faintest of touches in the penalty area, and the City man goes to ground. Moss points to the spot.
Zabaleta back on as Distin is almost embarrassed by Aguero before managing to get the ball away for a corner as his clearance ricochets off Baines.
Good tackle from Fernandinho denies Deulofeu the chance to break. City still down to 10 while Zabaleta gets a clean shirt.
Lovely cushioned pass from Silva sets Clichy away down the left, but his cross is turned behind for a corner.
Second half has just lacked the fizz and intensity of the first. City controlling things rather better as they look to protect or extend their 2-1 lead.
Jagielka does well again to stop Aguero spinning past him on the edge of the box as Toure plays yet another clever throughball in the final third.
Clichy preparing to come on, so it looks like Man City have lost a second member of their back four to injury in the game.
City down to 10 men temporarily as Kolarov receives treatment. Clichy warming up in case Kolarov is unable to continue.
A weak pass from Fernandinho put Kolarov in trouble. Naismith pushes him in the back, with the result a collision between Kolarov and his team-mate Nastasic. Both City players are down, with Kolarov coming off the worst after taking a whack on the face. There's plenty of blood from a wound just below his eye, and Kolarov is furious with Naismith, who has escaped any punishmen - even a free-kick - for the shove that led to that collision.
Everton again show the danger they pose on the break as Barkley plays in Mirallas who can't bring the ball under control with his first touch and the chance is gone. Great vision from Barkley to pick out the run of Mirallas.
Again the corner is aimed at Kolarov on the near post, but he can't get the right contact on his flick-on and Everton have a goal-kick.
City well on top at the start of this second half. Milner curls in a fine cross from the left, and Distin does well to stick out a leg and turn it behind for a corner.
Kolarov in space again down the left, but not for the first time today his wicked low cross whistles through the penalty area with no-one able to apply the final touch.
A throughball looks to have asked too much of Lukaku, but after Hart dallies the keeper almost allows the striker to get back and rob him before finally making the clearance.
Plenty of half-time Price Boosts from Sky Bet. You can get 8/1 for City to go on and win this 4-1, while an Everton 3-2 comeback win is 33s. Toure is 12/1 to score the next goal, with Mirallas 25/1.
Moss shows Milner a yellow card for that half-ending foul on McCarthy. Cracking first half here at the Etihad. Three superb finishes from Lukaku, Negredo and Aguero and plenty of other chances in a game featuring some slick passing and lightning counter-attacks. Superb entertainment.
City pressing again as the half comes to an end, with the final action a foul by Milner on McCarthy as Everton look to clear their lines.
Aguero almost through again as Toure plays a perfectly weighted ball over the Everton defence. Superb defending from Jagielka, though, getting back to Aguero and timing his slide tackle to perfection. Any error there would've been a red card and a penalty, but Jagielka took the ball clean as a whistle.
Just before that goal, Coleman and Negredo were in each other's faces. May have partly led to Everton's defence being so deep when Silva played in Aguero. Referee Jonathan Moss has a word with both players before the game restarts.
GOAL - AGUERO. He's missed a couple of glorious chances, but not this time, rifling the ball inside the far post after being superbly played in by Silva. Stunning end to a captivating half of football.
Milner does get to the byline this time and stands up a cross to the back post where Aguero mistimes his leap and is already on the way down when he tries to head the ball back across goal. Gets nothing on it and Everton clear.
Aguero sends a shot wide but can't believe he hasn't been given a corner. Looked like there was a deflection, but goal-kick given.
Free-kick comes to nothing. Baines tries to play in Lukaku, who is bundled to the ground by Nastasic as the ball goes out of play for a goal-kick. Another penalty shout for Everton, and this one has a bit more going for it.
Another glorious chance for Aguero! He's clean through on Howards's goal after being played in by Negredo but then tries to shimmy and misses the ball completely.
Everton attack, City attack, Everton attack, City attack. City's turn now, with Silva's cross headed clear by Distin.
Everton counter-attack at great pace again, but Nastasic manages to emerge from a challenge with Barkley with the ball. He immediately gives it away, but Everton can't capitalise on the second chance.
Naismith cuts in on to his right foot inside the City penalty are and goes down. Some appeals for a penalty, but nothing given.
Sustained spell of possession for City in front of the Everton defence as they look to pick a way through. The ball is worked out to Kolarov on the left. Cross is whipped across the face of the goal, but no-one in light blue gambles and the ball runs away to safety.
Blow for Man City here, with Kompany down injured and looking far from impressed. Nastasic warming up, and City are going to lose their skipper here.
Mirallas just offside as he heads goalwards. Hart makes a decent save, which will boost his confidence even if the goal would not have stood in any case.
Naismith the target as the free-kick is raked crossfield, but Zabaleta is able to deal with the threat.
Game continues to flow one way then the other at breakneck pace. Free-kick for Everton just inside the City half.
What a chance! Brilliantly worked training-ground routine sees Fernandinho and Silva combine to play in Aguero. The striker opens his body and looks to bend the ball inside the far post. For all the world you expect the net to bulge, but Aguero puts it wide of the post. Would've been a glorious goal.
Kolarov wins a free-kick on the left-hand side after being caught by Mirallas as he tries to get back and deal with the situation.
Second corner comes to nothing. A fast-breaking Lukaku cynically brought down by Kompany who earns a booking for his efforts.
Corner taken short. Milner's attempt to stand up a cross spins off an Everton defender and behind for another corner off the post.
Mirallas plays in Coleman down the right, but his cross is just too far behind Lukaku, and then doesn't quite fall for Barkley. City launch a lightning break, but Distin keeps pace in a foot race with Kolarov and turns the ball behind for a corner.
GOAL - NEGREDO. City level within a minute. Beautiful goal - similar to Lukaku's, sliding the ball past the keeper after his run was superbly picked out by Toure's threaded pass.
GOAL - LUKAKU. Man City's offside trap fails as Lukaku is played through from deep. Lukaku skips past a weak challenge from Lescott and then slides the ball under Hart. Poor from City, but wonderful play again from Lukaku.
Free-kick taken quickly and Naismith is away. His attempt to find Lukaku looks over hit, but the striker gets to the ball just before Hart who does well in the end to smother the shot and divert the ball behind. Clear corner, but a goal-kick is given.
Neat football from City sets up a shooting chance for Milner. His effort is blocked, and Zabaleta is dispossessed as he looks to capitalise on the rebound.
Kolarov gets across his marker to meet the corner at the near post, but he sends his header over the bar.
Sweet strike from Kolarov that gets up and down over the wall but dips and bends just the wrong side of the post for the Man City man. Plenty of fans thought it was in as the net rippled.
Soft free-kick given against Jagielka for a foul on Aguero. Looked harsh, but it's a shooting chance for City.
Milner's corner is headed clear by Lukaku. Suddenly there's a break on for Everton but Mirallas makes a mess of it.
First meaningful Man City attack ends with Yaya Toure's shot from 20 yards being turned behind by Howard. Bounced just in front of the keeper who did well to deal with it.
Early evidence that part of Milner's job today will be tracking the forward runs of Baines. Does well too, preventing Naismith's pass finding the marauding left-back.
John Turner: "Everton to win 2-0, Distin and Osman to bag goals, and Lescott to get sent off. Man City are crumbling under the pressure at the moment Everton are on the up up up!"
Ian: "Warmest Greetings from Mallorca & hope you don't mind an exiled City fan dropping you a line or two. Pleased to see Lescott replacing the woeful Nastasic, good solid selection from Manuel. This is going to be a tough nut to crack, I can foresee 2-1 to my beloved City.
Daniel Covington: "Joe Hart has been under a lot of pressure, and needs to be given a break. He needs the support of his manager as well. Everton have started off fantastic but I reckon a tight scoreline 2-1 to City, City to score first through Aguero."
"This is Stewart MacLaren from a warm & windy Torrevieja in Spain saying that Everton will beat Manchester City 2-1 at The Etihad Stadium this afternoon with good goals from Leighton Baines & Romelu Lukaku."
Man City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Lescott, Kolarov, Toure, Fernandinho, Milner, Aguero, Silva, Negredo. Subs: Richards, Nasri, Dzeko, Jesus Navas, Clichy, Pantilimon, Nastasic
Everton: Howard, Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Baines, McCarthy, Osman, Mirallas, Barkley, Naismith, Lukaku. Subs: Robles, Gibson, Heitinga, Jelavic, Kone, Deulofeu, Stones
