Blues and Black Cats hoping for a positive response

Manchester City and Sunderland look to bounce back from midweek defeats when they meet on Saturday. City slipped to only their second setback of the season away at Tottenham on Wednesday, while the Black Cats came unstuck on home soil against Aston Villa 24 hours earlier. The Blues have now won only one of their last 10 Premier League fixtures, and have slipped into eighth place in the table as a result. They are, however, still unbeaten on home soil and will fancy their chances heading into the weekend showdown at Eastlands. Mark Hughes' men have lost only one of their last 17 games in front of their own supporters, and have found the target in each of those contests. City have also won nine of their last 10 meetings with Sunderland, including the last eight in a row. The omens do not look good for Steve Bruce's visitors, as they have also lost four of their last six matches on the road. The Black Cats have won just one of their last 18 Premier League away games and have taken one point from their last seven. No team in the top-flight has scored fewer goals on the road than Sunderland's five, while they have only managed to keep one clean sheet in their last 16 fixtures away from the Stadium of Light.

De Jong suspended

Manchester City will be without Nigel de Jong on Saturday as the combative midfielder must serve a one-match ban. Joleon Lescott will also be missing after undergoing knee surgery, while Michael Johnson is sidelined with a knee problem of his own and could miss the remainder of the season. Wayne Bridge is still nursing a knee ligament problem and will not feature again until the New Year and Shaun Wright-Phillips remains a doubt as he is yet to shake off an ankle knock.
Cana banned
Sunderland are also missing a key man in the heart of their midfield, with captain Lorik Cana banned for one match following his dismissal against Villa. His absence could mean that Lee Cattermole is drafted back into the starting XI following his recent return from injury. Boudewijn Zenden is rated as very doubtful as he struggles with a hamstring injury, while Anton Ferdinand definitely misses out with an ankle complaint. Craig Gordon is the Black Cats' only other long-term absentee as he continues his rehabilitation from a broken wrist.
