At times, you would have struggled to remember that the former Arsenal man was on the pitch. But he was at his destructive and quietly effective best as he kept his side ticking over.

A constant thorn in the side of England and his pace when cutting in from the left troubled Wes Brown and Matthew Upson. Capped his night with a well-taken goal.

The Manchester United defender started well at right-back and showed intent with attacking runs. But he faded and contributed to England's defeat, switching off as Nilmar scored the winner.
James Milner
Midfield
The Aston Villa man has proved it is possible to progress from the Under 21s to become a regular senior international under Fabio Capello. His effort wide on the left could not be faulted, however, his final ball was disappointing at times.
Wayne Rooney
Striker
The Manchester United star clearly wanted to lead by example in his first game as captain and he caused endless problems in 'the hole' behind attack. Unfortunately for England, his team-mates left him with too much to do.

  Shaun Wright-Phillips races down the right past Michel Bastos but Wayne Rooney is unable to reach his teasing cross at the far post.

  Joleon Lescott spares fellow centre-back Matthew Upson's blushes after he is robbed by Nilmar, with the Manchester City defender cutting out the resulting cross.
- 20 mins: England let off
  
  England are lucky to escape as for once Kaka's first touch deserts him as he tries to control a poorly-hacked kick from Ben Foster.
- 24 mins: Upson challenge
  
  Upson produces a perfect tackle to deny Kaka as he tries to get on the end of a one-two with Luis Fabiano. Bobby Moore-esque.
- 35 mins: England upset
  
  England are disappointed when Rooney's driving run towards goal is blocked by Thiago Silva on the edge of the penalty area and referee Abdullah Abdou waves play on, only for James Milner to shoot over the bar.
- 47 mins: Brown switches off
  
  Nilmar will take the plaudits for his well-taken header, but Wes Brown was at fault as he allowed the Brazil forward a free run on goal.

  Luis Fabiano's penalty was one to forget, but Fabio Capello will remember Wes Brown's woefully short attempt to chest the ball back to Ben Foster, causing his Manchester United team-mate to bring down Nilmar.

  It is not all bad for Brown as he puts his body on the line to block a goal-bound header from point-blank range and takes a whack in the face.
- 78 mins: Lucio lets rip
  
  Brazil captain Lucio almost has the goal his performance deserves as he unleashes a left-foot shot from 25 yards which beats Foster but rebounds back off a post.
