Commentary: West Ham v Manchester City

Last updated: 11th August 2007

Full-time: A deserved 2-0 win for City. West Ham rarely troubled Schmeichel, while Elano, Bianchi, Richards and Dunne all shone for City.

90+2 - Nearly three: Ferdinand's casual pass lets in Geovanni, but Green saves this time.

90 - Three to play: Minutes of added time, that is.

88 - Chance for Ashton: Ljungberg crosses and Ashton gets up above Onuoha to head wide.

86 - Exodus: The West Ham fans, who arrived in such high spirits, can't head for the exits fast enough.

85 - GOAL! Onuoha rampages through the Hammers defence before prodding the ball back for Geovanni to strike, across the keeper and into the far corner.

82 - Bojinov blast: The Bulgarian shows what he's all about, as he chests the ball down and hammers in a left-foot shot - miles off target though.

79 - Third City change: Geovanni replaces fellow Brazilian Elano

79 - Offside: Etherington crosses and Ashton volleys just over - but the flag is up.

77 - No power: Ljungberg finds Zamora but Schmeichel saves easily.

73 - Petrov fails again - Ireland and Elano work the space for the Bulgarian, but he dithers on the edge of the box and Spector clears.

71 - Third City caution: Elano trips Etherington as West Ham try to break.

70 - Mistake by Green: Petrov runs 60 yards and shoots, apparently harmlessly, but Green spills the ball wide for a corner.

67 - Bojinov close: The striker gets on the end of Petrov's cross but heads over.

62 - Here comes Ashton: McCartney is the man to make way as Curbishley goes to three up front.

60 - Substitutions: Bojinov and Onuoha replace Bianchi and the tiring Corluka for City.

59: Desperately close: Etherington volleys across the face of goal but Ljungberg is inches away from getting a touch for a certain goal.

56 - Dunne stands firm: Etherington's free-kick to the far post is flicked away for a corner by Dunne.

54 - Better for Hammers: Things look more promising in the second half for the home side - Corluka's strong defending holds off Ljungberg.

51 - More danger: Schmeichel can't prevent the corner from Garrido's back-header, but Hamann clears Ljunberg's corner. Zamora heads wide when the ball is returned.

50: Imminent arrival: Ashton looks set to come on very soon - probably for Zamora.

49 - Desperate scramble: Etherington's cross is missed by Bellamy, Ljungberg returns it but Richards clears before Zamora drives wide.

47 - Early pressure: Noble wins a corner off Garrido, but Upson heads over from Ljungberg's kick

Changes: Etherington and Mullins on for Bowyer and Boa Morte.

Half time - City lead: Bianchi's goal is enough to give City a 1-0 half-time advantage.

43 - By the right: Everything has gone down the left for West Ham, but Zamora plays in Bowyer down the right and Richards has to come round to cover.

42 - Easy for Green: Petrov flights a free-kick straight at Green from 30 yards - that's the Bulgarian's fifth attempt on goal.

39 - Hammer time: West Ham are improving, with Bellamy seeing plenty of the ball, but they haven't looked like scoring.

35 - City scare: Schmeichel gets no distance on the punch, but Ljungberg hooks his shot wide.

33 - And again: Make that four in six minutes.

30 - Home fans unhappy: Zamora is caught offside three times in as many minutes.

29 - Second caution: Ireland catches Bowyer and becomes the second name in the book.

25 - Green save: Green scrambles to his left to keep out another Petrov strike.

22 - Yellow card! Garrido brings down Ljungberg and picks up the first caution.

21 - No foul: Bellamy is brushed aside by Corluka and wants a free-kick, but gets nothing.

18 - Near miss: Zamora fires a long-range left-footer wide of the target. City's five-man midfield is dominating though and buying space for Elano.

17 - GOAL! Superb run by Elano, whose low cross-shot is touched in at the back post by Bianchi.

12 - Third time unlucky: Petrov shoots again but it dribbles tamely wide - he had Garrido over-lapping but didn't use him.

10 - Home boost: Bellamy gives the crowd a lift by snapping into a tackle on Dunne.

9 - Over the top: West Ham look edgy - they give Elano space and he fires over from 25 yards.

6 - Double take: Ferdinand's mistake gives Petrov another chance, but his right foot is weak and Green isn't troubled.

3 - First strike: Petrov lets fly from 30 yards but it's all along the ground and well wide.

1: Talking tactics - Corluka has started at right back for City, with Richards in the centre. No surprises in the Hammers' line-up.

We're off: City get the game started.

Three minutes to go: Peter Schmeichel is in attendance to watch Kasper make his first Premier League appearance, while Eggert Magnusson has been prowling solo around the Directors' Box for at least 10 minutes.

Teams news in: Bellamy partners Zamora in attack, with Ashton on the bench, Ljungberg also starts. For City, Schmeichel, Corluka, Garrido, Elano, Petrov and Bianchi all make their first starts.

Team news expected: Dean Ashton should return for West Ham after missing last season, while there should be debuts for Craig Bellamy and Freddie Ljungberg. City have a host of players available for their debuts, with Elano and Javi Garrido among those expected to start. With Andreas Isaksson injured, Joe Hart or Kasper Schmeichel will start in goal.
