Match Commentary: Boro 1-0 Derby

Last updated: 22nd March 2008

Tuncay Sanli goal celeb Middlesbrough v Derby

Full time it is all over here and well as predicted in my preview yesterday, 1-0 to Boro. Poor match really but just about deserved. Thanks to you all for the feedback and I hope you can join us again next time.

90 mins - Alves break Great work from Boateng as he clears from right-back he finds Alves for his first real touches but he is closed down well and the chance is gone.

90 mins - Possible chance Wheater gives a free-kick away 30 yards out - a chance for Derby to do something but Ghaly can only find Schwarzer.

Crowd control Peter in Moscow wants to know if the crowd have left. Well no, not yet as Derby are keeping Boro on their toes here Peter.

88 mins - Break Another great chance for Derby who counter from Boro corner. Three on two as Miller has Pearson and Ghaly in support, but he goes on his own and shoots straight at Schwarzer - he should have passed.

87 mins - Changes made Alves and Johnson come on and strike-duo Tuncay and Aliadiere come off. Downing has moved up-front with Alves.

86 mins - What a chance Fantastic chance for Derby to level. Andy Todd pulls it back for Earnshaw who heads wide from no more than three yards - horror show as Derby should be level from there only real chance of the match!

85 mins - Get ready Boro are getting Adam Johnson and Alves ready for action! God this game needs something!

84 mins - All wrong Good work from O'Neil down the right he cross for Aliadiere but his header is way off the mark and almost goes for a throw.

83 mins - More bad news for Boro Yes Sunderland have scored at Villa Park as Newcastle go 2-0 up, well at least Boro are still winning.

80 mins - Nice move For the first time some lovely football from Derby, involving half the team - with Ghaly the instigator. He looks for Earnshaw in the box but he is denied. The Boro fans are getting frustrated now.

Yawn fest Well Jay in Melbourne thinks so, and that has been enough to send him to bed. Night Jay.

78 mins - Booking Tuncay is booked for blocking a Moore clearance with his hand - the fans dont like it.

76 mins - Awful The passing on show here is truly dreadful from both sides - neither side looks like it wants the ball, Aliadiere for instance takes the ball down wonderfully well but then his next touch is into open space!!!

Derby hope? John Grieve wants to know what chance of a Derby goal and how did Savage do? Well I thought Savage was okay, better than Jones anyway and a Derby goal looks unlikely but at 1-0 you never know.

74 mins - Pressure mounts More pressure from Boro, this time Downing curls in a corner looking for Wheater but his header is wide.

73 mins - Carroll on song Another good stop from the Derby keeper as Aliadiere is sent through, he beats Moore for pace but his shot is parried by the Rams number one - good stuff from the Northern Ireland ace.

72 mins - Good hands Mark Schwarzer is called on to make a rare save, well he actually clutches the ball from McEveley's cross - he did well with a slippy ball.

Young concern Justin in London wants to know if the Young switch was tactical. Well it wasnt as we are hearing he has a back problem but as I said doesnt look a major problem.

69 mins - Poor fare The conditions arent helping but Boro seem to have lost all their composure and the match is not making good viewing at the moment.

68 mins - Bleach blond Forgot to mention Cattermole is sporting a new hairdo - bright blond, and yet Ghaly still didnt see him coming as he fouls him. Catternole just moments later does it again and this time he is booked.

66 mins - Boro sub And here is Boro's first sub and it is a strange one as Luke Young comes off with Mohamed Shawky coming on - it must be an injury with Boateng dropping to right-back. Worrying news for Boro but he didnt look in touch much discomfort.

65 mins - Told you so The snow is coming down now, horrible conditions here now.

64 mins - Rare chande Derby win a corner and it is cleared. It comes back out for Lewis, he finds Villa with the cross but his header is well over. Another half chance but no more.

63 mins - Changes Michael Wittering and Chris Smeaton want to know what is happening with Alves - is he coming on, well there is some movement but it looks like Derby are going to make a double change first. Stephen Pearson and Hossam Ghaly are coming on with David Jones (who has had a shocker) coming off along with Savage.

61 mins - Missed chance Aliadiere breaks clear on the right and Downing makes a great run down the left, but the striker tries a one-two with Tuncay instead, which doesnt work. Wrong option from the Frenchman.

60 mins - Getting wet The rain is starting to come down on Teesside although it could easily change to snow!

59 mins - First booking No prizes for guessing who? Yes Robbie Savage is first to pick up a yellow after his challenge on Tuncay.

57 mins - Down Aliadiere is down again, this time after Moore goes through the back of him and he looks in pain although there wasnt too much wrong with the challenge. He looks in some pain, it is the same ankle he had a problem with in the first-half.

All quiet You lot are like buses, no emails and then a glut - you know where to send by now.graeme.bailey@bskyb.com

55 mins - Great save Brilliant stop from Carroll at full strecth as Boateng unleashes a volley from the edge of the box.

54 mins - Dominant All Boro at the moment with O'Neil very busy - a second goal looks as if it is coming for Boro.

52 mins - Derby luck Brilliant pass from Boateng sends O'Neil clear and Jay McEveley brings him down with a crude challenge right on the edge and it looks as if it could have been a penalty. The resulting free-kick comes in and Aliadiere is there to glance a header just wide. Replays are showing that it should have been a penalty, Derby are very lucky.

50 mins - Anger Tuncay takes the ball down unchallenged in midfield but his ball is poor - but Derby boss Paul Jewell is not happy and is demanding more effort. 30 seconds later Savage is there to challenge the Turk.

47 mins - Rams counter Derby break down the other end and win a corner off Andrew Taylor, the first of the game. Eddie Lewis curls it in - but Boro clear through Boateng.

46 mins - Good save Boro are on the attack straight away and it comes for Aliadiere in the box, he turns and shoots and Carroll blocks well with his legs.

Kick-off Boro get us underway and they are kicking - as you see it on tv - from right to left towards their own fans.

On their way The teams are out, at first glance no changes!

Big win Glenn Matthews from New Zealand is predicting a 3-0 Boro win with a Tuncay double, well he is half-way there.

Taylor report To answer Justin Johnston-Taki - Andrew Taylor is doing okay although he took a knock early. To be honest I would say Jonathan Grounds is unlucky not to be in.

Crowd Peter McDonnell wants to know what the crowd is like. I would say not too bad, hard to tell with most of the South Stand shut but I would estimate 26,500 - note I will go back and change this when it is confirmed just to look smart!

Nice pic! And we have a picture of Tuncay celebrating from today's match - I know you can't tell but I promise it is!

Controversy from down under! Now this is bound to get some replies - Nick Foulds from Wagga Wagga (actually a real place!) does not know how Boro's modern stadium could have storm damage and he feels Teessiders are being 'fickle' unlike the loyal Rams support. Well Nick cant comment on the fans really although I know many are still hurting from the Cardiff result - and well don't think Derby can comment on the stadium given they used the design for the Riverside to build Pride Park - but we will see what Boro fans have to say in reply, do you agree with Nick?graeme.bailey@bskyb.com

Half-time The whistle goes for half-time and Boro are ahead which is just about a fair reflection on the match so far - please dont stop sending in, I am just going through more of your mails now! graeme.bailey@bskyb.com

45 min - Now this was a penalty Another claim by Boro, but this was a stonewall penalty as Todd - for some reason - just grabs Aliadiere and throws him to the floor, again not given by Mr Atkinson, he musnt have been watching the play otherwise it would have been given.

Two Lee's Two questions from two Lee's - Maskell and McMaster. Lee Maskell wants to know how Boateng and Cattermole are shaping up in comparison to Arca and Rochemback. Well Lee talk about chalk and cheese, there isnt much up against them today to be honest but they are doing okay nothing more though. And Lee McMaster wants to know how Wheater is doing following his England call-up, again like with the midfield there isnt too much for him to do but he will have to be on his toes as Earnshaw looks quick.

45 mins- Physio again Both physios are earning their money today, this time O'Neil is down after a coming together with Villa - could be a dead-leg but he should be okay to continue.

42 mins- More claims Another claim for a penalty by Boro, this time the ball bounces up at Leacock and strikes his hand, ref says no and you have to agree really. Derby then break up the other end and Miller fires over from the edge of the box, a half-chance for Derby which they need to take - especially away from home.

Forgiveness Paddy MacDonald - a Boro fan in the Toon - wants to know if the fans look to have forgiven them for the Cardiff result. Well Paddy they are quite vocal given how cold it is, but I think it is going to be someitme before they earn that and it will take a lot more than a win over Derby.

41 mins - More treament This time it is a Boro player down as Aliadiere gets a kick, on what looks like his ankle. He looks in pain but should be okay. The resulting free-kick is taken by Downing but again is well off target and quite poor, as the deliver froim set-pieces has been all day today.

40 - Change We have our first sub of the day as Sterjovski has failed to shake off the injury he picked up after Cattermole clattered him, Argentine Emmanuel Villa comes on and it should be interesting to see how he gets on.

38 - Counter hope Derby are looking to counter and they are looking dangerous at times and Earnshaw actually scores but it is ruled out for offside as he gets away from Wheater. Right decision but Boro should take note. That should also answer the question from Neil Turnbull - who is all the way in California today!

Alves impact? Well Gareth Saunders is already looking for Afonso Alves - who is on the bench for Boro - to come on, whilst Rob in Texas wants to know if the Brazilian would make an impact - well Rob I dont think he would have a better chance of scoring but Moore and Leacock are both very physical so he might not fancy it too much.

Well you did ask... Just as Tuncay scored Lewis Bradley was asking how Derby were doing, well Lewis there is your answer and it was coming really.

34 mins - Penalty claims Pogatetz goes down but Martin Atkinson is having none of it and he appears unlucky as Dean Leacock was tugging him. Leacock and Moore are not amused and let Pogatetz know so.

31 mins - GOAL The breakthrough comes and it is Tuncay who fires home after a nice run, he cuts inside and fires home - it has been coming.

Polish Ram We have our first Derby mail, Boro were dominating the mailbox like the game so far. Raf wants to know whether Derby will go 26 games in the Premier League without winning and beat Sunderland's record. Well Raf, Derby are on 24, so they need to beat Boro or Fulham in their next match and although I can't see a win today, a home match with Fulham is a great chance - so you never know!

29 mins - Catt close Another chance comes for Cattermole as Derby scramble another corner away, this time the young midfield see his side-footer fly about a foot wide, unlucky but he will think that he could have done better.

27 mins - Lack of chances Boro continue to dominate possession but little in the way of action here and I am still waiting on your mails - there must be some questions you guys want answering, so come on get in touch! graeme.bailey@bskyb.com. Lets start predictions, who do you think is going to open the scoring here?

Bad news up the road Well bad news for Boro fans - Mark Viduka has put Newcastle ahead at St James' against Fulham.

24 mins - Struggling Andrew Taylor is limping badly after going down for treatment. Jonathan Grounds is warming up and could be set to come on.

Africa calling Well our first mail from abroad sees Swamp Mick get in touch from Nigeria! Good to hear from you Mick. He is just hoping the Boro fans do not turn on them if they fail to take an early lead! Well no signs of that yet Mick! If your abroad following the action, let me know where you are! Remember my mail is graeme.bailey@bskyb.com.

21 mins - Boro pressure It is all Boro at the moment and Downing wins a corner which O'Neil whips in but Carroll manages to punch clear.

20 mins - Silly stuff Great move from Boro as Tuncay's plays a one-two with George Boateng - but Jeremie Aliadiere takes it off the foot of the Dutchman!

19mins - Half chance Boro free-kick is whipped in by Gary O'Neil - it comes for Tuncay just four yards out but he misses - good job the linesman's flag is up!

17 mins - Miss match Kenny Miller reacts badly to Emanuel Pogatetz challenge and he squares up to the Austrian, well he looks up at him and then decides to back away - wise move not to get involved with a player called Mad Dog!

16 mins - Over and out Cattermole fancies his chances and launches one, but it is way wide. Never going to trouble Carroll.

At last! We have some feedback and thanks to Dan Millward - and he wants to know about how empty the ground is and what this means. Well Dan, given Boro's last match was the defeat to Cardiff I think the crowd looks healthy to be honest, more than I expected - also the South Stand is empty after over-night wind damage at The Riverside. But also Derby have not brought many fans at all so that will not help!

14 mins - Rare attack Derby push forward for the first time with Earnshaw looking to break but the move is stifled out by Wheater and Luke Young.

12mins - Another one down Derby have another player down, this time Savage needs the physio after he clashes heads with George Boateng - the Boro fans are not too amused!

10 mins - Ouch!!! Cattermole crunches Australian Mile Sterjovski - some tackle and replays show the youngster is lucky to get away with it. The Derby man should be okay after some treatment. Still not much interaction here, remember you can get in touch and I will post any reaction we get. graeme.bailey@bskyb.com

9 mins - Close Great work from Downing as he crosses and it comes off Robbie Savage and only just goes wide, so nearly an own goal. Downing takes but it is put behind. The England man has another go, this time Tuncay Sanli meets it and Roy Carroll is there just to push it wide ahead of Wheater. Third corner comes in but Darren Moore clears.

6 mins - At last We have seen some action and Gary O'Neil wins a corner. Stewart Downing lines it up, but it is too long and drifts out. Poor.

4 mins - Cloughie looking down Of course Brian Clough is a legend of both these clubs and I am thinking of his famous quote "If God had wanted us to play football in the clouds, he'd have put grass up there" - Well he would be turning in his grave looking at this match so far! The grass has still barely seen the ball as Derby launch it at every chance.

1 min - Early doors 30 seconds gone and the ball has not touched the ground yet as the two sides play head tennis - lets hope this is not a sign of things to come!

Kick-off Bright sunshine, but a freezing day at The Riverside as Derby get the game underway.

Team thoughts? So both sides are now in, what do you make of it - Lee Cattermole starts for Boro and his central midfield clash with Robbie Savage could be tasty to say the least. Can new England call-up David Wheater cope with Rob Earnshaw and Kenny Miller? - let me know, graeme.bailey@bskyb.com. Andy Todd also comes into the Derby side as he faces his former club.

Derby Carroll, Todd, Moore, Leacock, McEveley, Sterjovski, Savage, Jones, Lewis, Earnshaw, Miller. Subs: Price, Villa, Pearson, Robert, Ghaly.

Boro Schwarzer, Young, Wheater, Pogatetz, Taylor, O'Neil, Cattermole, Boateng, Downing, Aliadiere, Sanli. Subs: Turnbull, Alves, Shawky, Johnson, Grounds.
