Full-time Portsmouth 2 Wigan 0. Jermain Defoe proved a point in the direction of Fabio Capello as his brilliantly taken double proved enough against Wigan. Redknapp's side were never at their best but in Defoe they have the predator supreme. Once again, many thanks for all of your feedback.
As Wigan pushed forward in numbers, Kranjcar's inch perfect pass played in Defoe and with poise and precision he wrapped up the points with an accomplished clipped finish.
94 - GOAL for Portsmouth DEFOE has done it again!!!
93 - Valencia goes down on the edge of the box but Wiley shrugs away his appeal. Good news for Wigan fans from Bolton though, Arsenal are now leading 3-2.
Four minutes injury-time held up Can Wigan forge a leveller?
90 - King again wasteful as he selfishly goes for goal from an acute angle. Bruce will be pulling his hair out on the touchline. The former Watford striker still has a lot to prove at this level.
89 - Wigan can't get the ball as Portsmouth are calmness personified in possession. Kranjcar nearly broke through with a trademark shimmy, while Nugent has looked lively since coming off the bench. You can't say the kid doesn't deserve a bit of luck.
88- It's FIVE strikers for Wigan as Melchiot is replaced by Aghahowa. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
86 - Sibierski denied by another James wonder save. The Frenchman showed great technique in controlling his volley from 20-yards but James brilliantly tipped over to rescue his side again.
82 - Skelly wants his money back as he claims Defoe's goal-a-game record is not good value. I suspect his tongue is firmly in cheek as the diminutive front-man, who in truth has done absolutely nothing but score, looks to be the match-winner once more.
81 - Very scrappy here so there's little to report. Marlon King has moved to the right flank but his two deliveries thus far have been very poor and cut out at the near post.
79 - Sibierski warned for a late challenge on Mendes. Wigan are looking somewhat laboured these last few minutes. Portsmouth have defended pretty well for most of the afternoon and it looks as though it could be long trip back north for Bruce's boys. Remember, you can contact me on alex.dunn@bskyb.com.
76 - Wonderful smothering save from James denies Heskey. Valencia's slide-rule pass played in the Wigan forward but James got his angles just right in denying the big man. Clearly he's learned his lesson from Wednesday night.
73- James out smartly to clear with his feet as Wigan charge forward in search of a leveller. They'll have to careful at the back though, as Pompey are more than capable of playing a quick counter-attacking game. Wigan are not going overly long though, and are playing some patient football. Just a thought, but have they missed Koumas' creativity this aftenoon?
71 - Tactical reshuffle Wigan now have four strikers on the pitch as Hagen has been sacrificed for King. Scharner will drop back, with Sibierski likely to play in the hole.
69 - Wigan go for broke as Marlon King is preparing to come on. Bent is the likeliest candidate to make way, with Heskey having enjoyed a productive afternoon.
68 - Portsmouth sub Richard Hughes is on for Utaka, with Portsmouth's bench looking a little worried. The forward appears to have picked up another knock.
65 - Flurry of changes Taylor's miserable afternoon shows no sign of improving as he is replaced by Sibierski. Nugent has also come on for Portsmouth, with Baros making way. In the ensuing mayhem caused by the penalty award, Lauren sneaked on to replace the injured Hreidarsson. Have Wigan blown their best chance of stealing a share of the spoils? Any late-doors predictions? Let me know your thoughts.
63 - Kirkland rescues Wigan with a low stop to deny Utaka. Moments earlier and Kilbane needed a strong defensive header to thwart Defoe - who was lurking at far post.
Disaster for Wigan Taylor's low spot-kick was brilliantly saved low to James' right. The ball came back to the Wigan man and he blazed miles over from no more than six yards. The goal was gaping and Taylor will wonder how he failed to convert. The penalty was awarded for Distin's trip on Valencia. Replays showed it was again a decent call by the match officials.
SAVED - David James has denied Ryan Taylor
61 - Penalty for Wigan!!!! A controversial award - Redknapp is fuming.
60 - Blow for Portsmouth Hreidarsson has what looks to be a twisted ankle and is on the touchline. Upon returning to his feet he beat his fists - clearly frustrated with the FA Cup semi on the horizon.
57 - Taylor thumps high, wide and not so handsome on the stretch at the far post. Valencia's looping cross was kept in play by Heskey but Taylor couldn't control his volley.
53 - Skoko booked for pulling back Baros, who is looking so much sharper. Perhaps he's had a Harry rocket at the break. He certainly looks hungry for a goal having watched Defoe steal the spotlight again.
51 - Utaka fires into side-netting after showing dancing feet in cutting inside Taylor down Portsmouth's left. Kirkland had it covered but it's another warning sign. Taylor has been caught in the mouth and is receiving attention. He should be fine to continue.
50 - Pompey in control of the early second half sparring. Wigan look a little lacklustre as the home side hunt for a killer second.
48 - Baros bursts into life as his effort after a smart one-two is blocked by Boyce. The Lyon man, on-loan at Portsmouth from Lyon, has been peripheral all afternoon but looked sharp then. He's yet to score in ten Pompey appearances though. I have just had the first call for the introduction of Aghahowa.
46 - Scharner booked for the first late challenge of the game. Mendes was on the receiving end in the middle of the field. More clumsy than dirty and there are no major complaints. I've also just learnt Defoe was booked for taking his shirt off when celebrating his goal. Good to see refs clamping down on the serious stuff.
Wigan kick-off the second half, with Damien desperate to see Marlon King introduced into the action.
Half-time Portsmouth 1 Wigan 0. Followers of Wigan shouldn't be too downbeat as the away side have created chances and look capable of scoring a goal. Redknapp will be content with the score but perhaps not the performance. Portsmouth are certainly playing within themselves to date but in Defoe have a striker at the peak of his powers.
45 - Last few moments here as Kirkland takes a cross easily enough. A good start for Wigan has failed to be built on though by Bruce's men, so they've it all to do in the second half.
45 - Heskey is down after being caught in the face by Campbell. Nothing malicious but it's been a fine old fashioned contest between the pair. While most of the Pompey fans are loving life this season, John May is frustrated they aren't doing even better. Any thoughts? And for Wigan supporters, Bolton have gone two up and Arsenal are down to ten men. What should Bruce do at the break? Let me know your thoughts on alex.dunn@bskyb.com.
42 - From Palermo with love Carl Parker is stuck at work with a 'humongous hangover' but his mood has improved with Defoe's opener. His wife is at the match, so at least the Parker clan are well represented. And Carl, remember, it's better to be hungover on work's time than your own.
It's an open affair here as Wigan are enjoying spells of possession but Pompey, without being at their fluid best, look dangerous on the counter-attack. The much maligned Heskey deserves a pat on the back for an unstinting work-rate - which could yet yield dividends.
37 - Heskey wins a free-kick off Campbell. The veteran defender is struggling to contain his international team-mate. Scharner's effort, though, is pathetic. Bruce is furious on the touchline.
35 - Kranjcar goes close to making it two. Wigan don't know what's hit them here as the midfielder struck with venom, as Kirkland was made to parry over the top. A massive ten minutes ahead until the break for Wigan as Pompey go for a second.
Defoe finished smartly from an acute angle after Utaka's shot had looped into his path off a Wigan defender. That's five in five at Fratton Park. Are you watching Fabio.
33- GOAL for Portmouth! It's that man DEFOE again!!!
32 - Excellent turn from Bent creates a yard of space but his shot lacks punch. Mendes is trying to get on the ball for Pompey.
Bad news for Wigan fans as Kenwyne Jones draws Sunderland level at home to West Ham. Derby are beating Fulham so that's great news for Bruce but Bolton have taken the lead against Arsenal. The game here is very much for the taking. It's all a little pedestrian, with leaden legs after an international week playing their part.
25 - Kirkland breathes a sigh of relief as he is adjudged not to have handled outside of the area in taking a lofted Kranjcar pass. I think referee Alan Wiley got the call about right. At the other end, Taylor has been wasteful with a free-kick around thirty-yards from goal. Email your thoughts to alex.dunn@bskyb.com.
22 - Pompey a little too cute in the final third as they try and pass the ball into the net. Wigan are defending all too easily as Portsmouth's attack lacks a thrust thus far. Everyone knows Defoe loves a shot but at times the home side are being a little too intricate. The Beast is beginning to settle for Wigan after a clumsy start.
Wigan faithful content with Bruce it seems as Damien Caunce and Richard Turega have both emailed to offer their praise. Richard used to dread Saturday afternoons but thinks two wins will be enough for survival.
20 - Ryan Taylor causes James consternation with a bending daisy cutter that drifted a yard or so wide. The wide man capitalised on Campbell's poor defensive header and went so close to opening the scoring. It's been an impressive away day thus far for Wigan.
17 - Decent spell for Wigan as Skoko just fails to get a shot in after a scramble in the home side's area. Heskey and Bent are winning their fair share of flick ons and causing Campbell and Distin - normally so solid - problems with their physical strength.
The Wigan wide man had to score when played in by Heskey after Pompey were caught horribly square on. His finish was accurate but Glen Johnson was allowed to get back on the stretch and divert the ball onto the bar. A glorious chance for the away side.
16 - Ball smashed against Pompey's bar as Valencia misses a glorious opportunity.
14 - Real chance for Defoe as the ball dropped in Wigan's box. The England man's strike was true but a yard or so over.
12 - Any Wigan fans out there? While there's a bit of a lull in the action, what are your thoughts on Bruce's tenure? Has he done enough to keep your boys up?
10 - Hagen concedes free-kick in a dangerous situation on the edge of Wigan's box. Kranjcar's bent effort was a yard or so wide - good job too - as Kirkland looked unsighted.
8 - Pompey chimes are heard for the first time as the home faithful wake up thanks to Defoe's direct drive for goal. The striker's shot smashed against the chest of Melchiot. Are Pompey ready to turn the screw?
6 - Excellent defending from Hreidarsson denies Bent in the area from Skoko's devilish whipped delivery from the left. No real tempo set as yet as both sides feel each other out.
4 - Mr King's on the money as Kranjcar's cultured left peg draws the first save of the afternoon. The gifted Croatian cut inside and hammered for the near post but Kirkland was down smartly to parry. The resulting corner was cleared easily.
3 - Wigan win the first corner but it comes to nothing as debut boy Erik Hagen is penalised. The big Norwegian looks an absolute beast.
2 - Pompey on front-foot as they win a throw deep in Wigan's half. Pompey fans Adam King has warned Wigan that Defoe is red-hot at the moment. He also says keep an eye on Kranjcar. Any predictions? I'm playing the politician this afternoon so remain firmly on the fence.
1 - Portsmouth kick-off as Harry Redknapp and Bruce exchange pleasantries on the touchline.
Early thoughts It's a typically breezy afternoon on the coast as Portsmouth look to cement their position in sixth against a Wigan side who are battling manfully to retain their top flight status. Bruce has opted to partner Emile Heskey with Marcus Bent ahead of Marlon King, who has struggled for goals since returning to the big time. For Pompey, Milan Baros lines up alongside the in-form Jermain Defoe - who will be looking to show Fabio Capello what he was missing in France. Any Pompey fans out there who think Defoe was hard done by?
