birmingham v fulham

Full-time: Fulham 2 Birmingham 0. The Cottagers move out of the relegation zone, while Birmingham are now second from bottom.

90 + 3 - Break: Davies sends Healy galloping clear, but the angle becomes too tight and he drags a shot straight at Taylor.

Sub: Dempsey makes way for Healy.

Booked: McFadden has his name taken for a foul on Dempsey.

90 + 2 - Good effort: Murphy goes for goal with a 25-yard free-kick, but it is too central and is easily tipped over by Taylor.

Booked: Jaidi is cautioned for blocking off Nevland as the striker looks to get in behind.

89 - Dreadful: A Birmingham corner falls to Muamba at the back post but his effort is truly awful and trickles behind for a goal kick. That could be about it for the Blues.

87 - GOAL: Fulham 2 Birmingham 0. Konchesky lofts a hopeful ball forward and when Queudrue gets his header all wrong Nevland is away. He closes in on goaol, composes himself and smashes the ball past a helpless Taylor. Should be game over.

Booked: Queudrue is cautioned for his protests.

86 - So close: Jaidi towers above everyone to win a header from Larsson's corner and sees his effort bounce agonisingly wide of the post.

85 - Waste: Birmingham play a short corner, but Murphy's delivery is woeful and is headed away by Hughes. Both sides look tired, but can't afford to give up now.

Nervous: Geoff in Austria has everything crossed that Fulham will not throw away their lead as they edge towards a crucial three points.

82 - Space: McBride drifts towards the back post unmarked as Bullard tries to find him with a free-kick but the ball is overhit and the striker is unable to keep it in play.

81 - Noise: The Craven Cottage faithful have upped the noise level as we enter the last 10 minutes. Can they carry their side to glory?

79 - Good challenge: Hangeland does well to time his tackle on McFadden as the Blues forward bursts towards the dead-ball line. Jaidi looks to be in after staying up after the corner but has drifted into an offside position.

78 - Poor touch: Zarate knocks a clever pass intp Kelly but the full-back's first touch lets him down and Hangeland is able to come across and cut out the danger. Birmingham are pushing men forward but can't find a killer ball.

76 - Well out: Queudrue lofts a long, straight ball down the field which almost frees Jerome. Keller is quick off his line though and gathers the ball seconds before the striker arrives on the scene.

75 - Almost: McBride is awesome in the air and flicks on towards Nevland. His strike partner has not read the touch though and is nowhere near the dropping ball. Fulham are pushing hard for a second.

Sub: Jerome comes on in place of Forssell.

74 - Should be two: Davies whips over a great ball from the right and Dempsey should do better as he plants a free header over the bar. A great chance to double their lead goes begging.

72 - Close: Larsson floats a free-kick towards Johnson, but he is kept out by Konchesky. The ball continues to bobble around in the Fulham box before Hangeland hammers clear.

Booked: Davies goes into the book for a mistimed tackle.

Staying up: Paul in the US of A is certainly confident that the Cottagers have what it takes to maintain their top flight status. His countryman has given them a good chance of achieving that goal here today and they look good for the points.

68 - Frustration: McFadden is doing his best to get Birmingham going but he is being blocked off at every turn. He needs to keep his head as he appears to be getting wound up.

Sub: Kamara has picked up a knock and is replaced by Nevland.

66 - Poor: Larsson has an opportunity to test Fulham with a free-kick from the right but his delivery is too high and too hard and is taken easily by Keller.

Out of the zone: At present Fulham are out of the bottom three as Reading are losing at home to Spurs. What an achievement it would be if they were to stay up.

64 - Too much: Zarate is keen to get invloved but is trying to do too much on his own. Fulham have so many men behind the ball that he is never going to be able to beat them all and needs to involve his team-mates.

61 - Offside again: Kamara yet again. The Blues are holding a high line and are perhaps fortunate to get this decision. Kamara was cutting in from the left flank and appeared to be level when the ball was played.

60 - Poor pass: McFadden has room to shoot 20-yards from goal but chooses to try and slide in Forssell. His pass is overhit though and it rolls harmlessly behind.

Sub: Kapo makes way for Zarate as Alex McLeish looks to boost his attacking options.

58 - Good hit: McFadden with a wicked swerving, dipping effort with flashes inches past the post. Hope for the Blues, and yet another example of how crucial the Scotsman is to their chances.

57 - Offside: No need by Kamara. He is looking along the line and still goes too soon. He had plenty of space to move into and could have waited for the ball to reach him..

55 - Quick feet: Brilliant run by Kamara as he twists and turns past four Blues defenders. It all goes to his head though as he then blazes over the top. Dempsey had an open goal in the centre had he looked up, but Kamara can hardly be blamed for trying to round off a fine move in style.

54 - Mix up: Birmingham look rattled and Jaidi slides in to take the ball off Kelly, his own team-mate! There is plenty of time left and they need to regain their composure.

52 - GOAL: Fulham 1 Birmingham 0. Bullard lifts over a free-kick from the left at a difficult angle for Taylor and the Blues defence to deal with. McBride dives in at the far post to plant a firm header back across goal and into the far corner. How crucial could that goal prove to be?

51 - Quality: Birmingham need to get the ball to McFadden more regularly. The Scot looks to have the beating of Konchesky.

Booked: Muamba is cautioned for dissent. Birminigham appeared to have won a corner only to find the decision given the other way. Muamba had every right to compain, but should have walked away after being warned.

49 - Easy save: McBride tries his luck from 2-yards but his effort flies straight at Taylor.

48 - Well positioned: Kapo swimgs over a cross from the left but Konchesky reads the danger and does well to get in front of the waiting McFadden.

47 - Sloppy: Not the best of starts as Hangeland hammers a long ball straight out of play, and Forssell is a mile offside as he looks to break clear. It can only get better!

Second-half: Fulham get us up and running again.

Sub: The injured Ridgewell has made way for Queudrue. Not surprising considering how badly the former Villa man was struggling at end of the first-half.

Half-time: Fulham 0 Birmingham 0. All square at the break in a games of few clear cut chances. Fulham will feel that have edged the first period, but Birmingham have defended well.

Booked: Stalteri is cautioned for diving.

45 + 1 - Great block: Ridgewell is not helping his team. Murphy breaks down the right and pulls a ball back to Kamara. The striker makes good contact from six-yards, but Jaidi throws himself in front of the effort to keep it out.

45 - Problems: Ridgewell has hobbled off and looks in some pain. He rejoins the action but looks far from comfortable.

43 - Solid again: Bullard floats in a corner from the left which is hammered cleared by Jaidi. The centre-half has done well this afternoon and looks unbeatable at the moment.

40 - Recovery: James McFadden gives up a chance to get a shot away after beating the offisde trap and bursting into space. He trys to play a square pass to Forssell but Hughes gets back in the nick of time to get a toe to the ball and knock it behind. Birmingham really should have made more of that opportunity.

39 - Rash: Damien Johnson is fortunate to escape a booking as he piles into Davies. The Fulham winger just about managed to get out of the way in time which may have spared the Blues skipper.

38 - Handball: Dempsey appears to use his shoulder to take the ball into the box but has been pulled back by the referee. He eventually misses his effort anyway, but it looked a harsh decision. Fulham have been on the wrong end of a few questionnable calls by the officials.

36 - Well over: Bullard whips in a free-kick from the right which Kamara gets his head to. The striker has been well marshalled by Jaidi though and plants his effort high into the stands.

35 - Patient: Birmingham are happy to sit and watch Fulham knock the ball around among themselves, and the Cottagers lack ides on how to break down the stubborn resistance.

34 - Quiet: The game needs bringing to life. A bright opening has made to a tight contest in which defences are very much on top.

30 - No vision: Ridgewell stays up following a Birmingham corner and is disappointed not to be given the ball once finding plenty of space on the left of the area. As a result, Kapo gets an earful as the defender jogs back into position.

29 - Must do better: McFadden with a freat run before feedign Larsson on the left. The Swede delivers the perfect cross to Forssell, but the striker lets the ball slip under his boot and the chance goes begging. All he needed to do was get it under control and he had a clear view of goal.

27 - Almost: Murphy looks to breaks past his forwards after a good one-two with McBride. He gets the ball caught under his feet though and eventually knocks a poor touch into the hands of Taylor.

26 - Poor pass: Kamara and Davies make lung-bursting breaks to get up in support of Dempsey, but as the American looks for them he overhits his pass and it runs harmlessly away for a throw.

25 - Danger: McFadden certainly has the ability to cause Fulham problems, but his attempted cross is charges down by Hughes at the expense of a corner. The set-piece is easily dealt with.

Not pretty: The game so far is far from pleasing on the eye, but i don't think anyone was expecting a classic. There has been plenty of endeavour from both sides during the opening exchanges, but we are lacking a little bit of class which can cut defences open.

22 - Hand ball: Larsson barges his way into the area and is unfortunate to be penalised for hand ball as Hangeland smashes the ball against him.

21 - Good climb: McBride looks to ghost in behind Ridgewell at the back post, but the Blues defender rises welll to cut out Bullard's attempted cross. It was vital that Ridgewell got soemthing on the ball as McBride was in acres of space behind him.

20 - Slip: Forssel slips as he challenges Stalteri for a long ball, but the Fulham full-back touches it behind for a corner. Larsson's resulting set-piece is nodded clear by McBride.

18 - Shocking: Jaidi has just produced the world's worst dive. Kamara slid in on the defender to prevent him clearing his lines but got nowhere near him. Jaidi goes to ground anyway and is told to get up by Chris Foy.

17 - Solid: Kamara threatens to break through the centre of the Blues' defence but Ridgewell stands his ground well and gets in a vital interception.

16 - Delayed: Kelly muscles his way down the right flank, but in his attempts to work a better angle he ends up taking the ball out of play. Disappointing, but positive all the same.

Better: Birmingham have come back into the game during the last five minutes and are looking to pile men forward. Both sides don't look as though they have come to defend all day, so hopefully we will get some goals!

13 - Dangerous: Great swinging delivery by Larsson from a free-kick on the left and Hughes is forced into a last ditch header to prevent the cross reaching Forssell. Larsson can work magic from set-pieces and that could provide Birmingham's best chance of forcing a breakthrough.

11 - Tight again: Birmingham are pushing their luck. Dempsey sprays a decent pass towards the back post where Kamara has escaped his man. The linesman's flag again rescues the Blues, but the striker looked level and eventually they will get one of these decsions.

Mood: The Fulham fans are in fine voice and the atmosphere around the place has been visibly lifted by the Cottagers' resurgence over the last few weeks.

8 - What a save: Taylor with an unbelievable stop to deny Davies. Bullard drilled a clever free-kick low across the box and Davies looked to place his effort into the bottom corner. From only eight-yards out the Welshman looks on in disbelief as Taylo rflings himself to his left and palms the ball to safety. Fulham look lively and are bossing proceedings at present.

6 - Mis-kick: Great football by Fulham as they spread the play from one side to the other. Bullard takes a wide swing at Davies' cross, but misses the ball, while McBride heads aginst the bar from Konchesky's resulting cross. The American has been given offside though so his effort would not have stood.

5- Close call: Bullard lofts a delicate ball in behind Birmingham, but Davies has broken too soon and is pulled back by the linesman's flag. It was a tight decision and Birmingham have received their first warning that they cannot afford to push too high up the field.

Settle: Both sides are bound to have a few butterflies knocking around, and today's contest could come down to who settles quickest. An early goal for either side could see their opponents heads drop beyond return.

2 - Too long: Jaidi launches a free-kick towards the Fulham box but overhits the delivery and it sails over the heads of the waiting masses and out for a goal-kick.

1 - Positive: Kapo makes an early break down the right for Birmingham, but is eventually dispossesd by Stalteri. He had men charging into the box but delayed the cross fractionally too long.

Kick-off: Birmingham get us underway.

Get in touch: Keep your comments coming in throughout the afternoon. You use the following link to get in touch with me: Chris Burton.

Birmingham team: Maik Taylor, Kelly, Jaidi, Ridgewell, Murphy, Larsson, Muamba, Johnson, Kapo, Forssell, McFadden. Subs: Doyle, Jerome, Queudrue, Zarate, Parnaby.

Fulham team: Keller, Stalteri, Hughes, Hangeland, Konchesky, Davies, Bullard, Murphy, Dempsey, Kamara, McBride. Subs: Warner, Bocanegra, Healy, Nevland, Andreasen.

Both sides know that their fate could be sealed this afternoon should they fail to pick up three points and results elsewhere go against them. Fulham have enjoyed a mini-revival of late winning two of their last three, while Birmingham have slipped into trouble on the back of no wins in four. It promises to be an intriguing contest and hopefully we will get two teams looking for goals as opposed to looking to avoid defeat.
