Russia v Wales

Final email from Adam who wants to know how the Spurs trio of Gunter, Bale and Pavlyuchenko did. You would have to say all three had very good games - the Russian looks a class act and could be a decent replacement for the departed Dimitar Berbatov.

Substitution90 The final act of the game sees Pavlyuchenko off with Vladimir Bystrov taking his place. The whistle goes straight away and it is a 2-1 defeat for a brave Welsh side.

90 Ricketts caught deep in his own half by Pavlyuchenko and the restart is launched long by Hennessey. Wales win a throw but it comes to nothing. The Welsh keep pressing but an offiside flag halts any momentum.

90 That is the first minute gone and Russia quite happy to just keep possession as Wales desperately chase the ball.

90 We are into time added on and there will be three more minutes.

89 Saenko makes a nuisance of himself down the right this time but he is unable to deliver a cross. He then nearly pounces on a header back to Hennessey from Ricketts but the ball has just enough pace to reach the Welsh 'keeper.

88 Saenko makes a promising burst into the Welsh area but just as he is about to set himself for a shot on goal, he has the ball pinched from out of his control.

86 Wales go hunting for a second equaliser but Ricketts is off target with a long-range effort.

85 Free-kick to Russia on the left near the edge of the Welsh area but his delivery is too strong and evades everyone.

84 Hennessey callled on to palm the ball round the post for a corner as Pavlyuchenko cuts on to his left-foot and hits a low drive from the edge of the Welsh area.

83 Russia seem to have settled down once again and they are content to knock the ball around and keep the Welsh chasing.

Goal81 GOAL POGBRENIAK - Hennessey is really unlucky as he makes a tremendous stop from a Zyryanov header but the ball drops to the feet of the substitute and he fires home from eight yards after he is the first to react.

79 Wales get another free-kick after a clumsy challenge from Kolodin. Bale steps up to strike and it is in on target but Akifeev makes a comfortable stop.

Substitution77 Steve Evans now on for Edwards for Wales. Ricketts has actually not been booked it was just the referee pointing it in the direction of Toshack.

Yellow Card77 John Toshack keen to get another substitute on for Wales. While he is gesticulating, Ricketts gets a yellow card for time wasting and Toshack then gets a card too!,

Substitution75 Pavel Pogbreniak is on for Russia in place of Semak.

75 Bale at the centre of some more good play from Wales but his left-foot shot is just high and wide of the top right-hand corner.

74 A touch of desperation from Russia as defender Denis Kolodin tries his luck from 30 yards at least but it flashes wide of the post.

Yellow Card73 Edwards goes in the ref's notebook as he hauls down Sergei Semak rather cynically in midfield.

71 Another Russian change on the cards sooner rather than later.

69 Russia's policy to sit back at 1-0 has backfired but they are no on the atack and looking for a second goal. But Wales have virtually all their team back defending.

Goal68 GOAL - LEDLEY: Bale bursts between two Russian defenders in the box and crosses low for Ledley to tuck into the empty net from two yards.

65 The ball goes up the other end and Arshavin misses a gilt-edged chance to double Russia's lead as he heads over from eight yards.

65 Bale wriggles his way into the Russian box but finds himslef crowded out by a trio of defnders and can't produce anything of merit.

63 A second corner of the game for Wales as Ledley's cross is blocked. The ball does break dangerously for a second in the Russian box and then Ledley crosses again - but it is too deep.

Substitution62 A second Welsh change sees a switch up from with Ched Evans on for Vokes, the latter having worked very hard for the cause.

61 It has certainly been much brighter from Wales so far as Russia seem to have run out of a few ideas at the moment in terms of building attacks.

Substitution60 First Russian substitute as Torbinksi is replaced by Ivan Saenko.

59 Another good chance for Edwards as he just glances a header over the Russian bar after a good cross from Gunter.

58 Nice ball into the Russian box from Gunter finds Edwards but his touch is really poor and the ball goes behind for a goal-kick.

56 Thanks to Allyn Sutton, who says on email: "Wales will turn it around in the second half and Bale will make up for his penalty miss with two goals, one will be a freekick!!!" A very bold prediction - do you have a crystal ball by any chance, Allyn?

55 Some more possession for Wales down the left and they win a throw inside the Russian half. The ball reaches Gunter but his left-foot effort is off target.

53 Long ball forward by Hennessey is headed on and Ledley goes in pursuit but Akinfeev is off his line and smothers the ball.

51 Better from Wales down the right and Edwards gets into a position to cross but the ball gets rather tangled underneath his feet and it is behind for a Russian goal-kick.

49 First chance of the second period as Pavlyuchenko cracks a left-foot shot from 25 yards but it gets a glance off the head of Morgan and goes behind for a corner.

Substitution48 Wales have made a change with Carl Robinson going off and he is replaced by Sam Ricketts.

Yellow Card46 Clumsy challenge by Ashley Williams on Dimitry Torbinsky earns the former a yellow card for his troubles. The free-kick is chipped into the Welsh box but cleared.

46 We are under way again in Moscow and the rain is still pouring down.

The marvellously named Webmaster from Dragon Soccer also thinks Wales are no forlorn hope in the second 45 minutes and he says: "Wales are still in with a shout, if we can hold Russia for the first 20 mins of the 2nd half. We are creating chances, just need to take one."

Betting with Sky Bet at the break has Russia 1-25 now for the victory with the Welsh 80-1 for an unlikely turnaround in Moscow. The draw is on offer at 10-1.

Wayne Price is a bit more optimistic about the chances of Wales and they are not out of this: "I think this wil be a great test for our young team. The future is bright with the success of the under 21s and plays like Gunter, Bale and Aaron Ramsey commanding big fees and moves to Premiership clubs. Maybe this game is a bit to early for them but a draw would be a fantastic result for the young dragons."

Nick Watson also expects a rough afternoon for the Welsh and he says: "Wales are definitely minnows of world football, and England soon will be too. I expect Wales will lose 5-0, England will be lucky not to lose today and the best they can hope for is a very lucky 0-0 draw. I don't like the attitude of the England players anyway despite being English and I wouldn't be all that sorry if they lost 3-0, although that would be tough on Fabio Capello the manager who I respect a lot."

Thanks to an email from Cillian Byrne who says: "I'm going to go for a 4-0 win for Russia. They're far too strong at home for a poor Welsh team." They have certainly created enough chances to be more than 1-0 up.

45 The referee has seen enough and it is halftime.

45 There will be an additional minute of play.

44 Final minute of the first half and another throw to Russia on the right deep in the Welsh half as the rain continues to hammer down.

42 Late break down the left for Wales and crossfield ball is headed out for a throw-in. The ball is crossed by Gunter and Ledley finds himself unmarked at the back post and manages to miss from a matter of yards. An infringement by Vokes is spotted and a goal would not have counted anyway.

40 Russia continue to press forward and win a throw-in on the right.

39 Gunter knocks the ball forward down the right for Simon Davies to chase but he looses his footing on the slippery surface and is unable to do anything bar put the ball behind for a corner.

38 Nice play down the right from Wales and the ball is crossed to Vokes in the centre. He can't get to the ball so decides to commit a clumsy challenge and gives away a free-kick.

37 Bale gets into an advanced position again down the left but he can't really make an impact and the ball is cleared up field by Russia.

35 Wales win their first corner of the game after a cross from Edwards is deflected behind. An in-swinger from Bale is comfortably cleared by the Russian backline.

34 Free-kick taken by Bale is hit towards the edge of the Russian area but it comes to nothing after flicking off a Welsh head and goes bhind for a goal-kick.

33 Zhirkov apologises to his team-mates as a wild left-foot shot from long range sails over thwe bar and into the crowd.

31 Good move on the far side by Wales and Joe Ledley crosses quite nicely but Akinfeev is alert to any danger and gathers the ball.

29 Arshavin shows some deft skills once again but his threaded pass is unable to avoid a cluster of Welsh defenders that have gathered around him.

27 Arshavin hits a lovely floated cross to the back stick from the edge of the area and Pavlyuchenko moves on menacingly behind Bale. The latter just gets a touch and the ball goes for a corner - which comes to nought once again.

25 Zyryanov creates some space on the left for Yury Zhirkov to cross. Hennessy springs from his line to punch clear in relatively convincing fashion.

Goal23 GOAL - PAVLYUCHENKO: The striker steps up and just beats Hennessy with a rather cocky spot-kick to give the home side the lead .

22 It is a second penalty in the space of six minutes as Zyryanov is brought down by Robinson after a clumsy challenge.

Yellow Card20 Carl Robinson picks up the game's first yellow card.

18 Are Wales going to be made to pay as Russia come pouring forward once more. A cross from the right flashes across the six-yard box and Gunter has to put it behind for a corner. Again the deliver is not great and wales now have a goal-kick.

16 High drama as Bale is hauled down in the box and the ref points to the spot. Bale then gets up to take the spot-kick but Igor Akinfeev saves well to his right and the score remains goalless.

15 Wales are exposed again down the right and Pavlyuchenko makes a dart to the near post to try and get on the end of the cross but just fails to make contact.

13 Some more slick play from the home side and Pavlyuchenko should have opened the scoring. He meets a chipped cross from the right about 10 yards out and makes good contact but Hennssey makes a fine save diving to his left and the ball is then scrambled clear by Craig Morgan.

11 All the possession is currently with the home side and Pavlyuchenko is able to work an opening after a good ball from Andrei Arshavin. His shot just deflects over the Welsh bar and a corner is the outcome - the restart comes to nothing.

9 Zyryanov plays an optimistic one-two and tries to chase down the return but Gunter is on hand to deal with any potential threat and sees the ball out for a Wales goal-kick.

7 Russia on the attack and in a dangerous position on the edge of the Welsh box but the referee spots an infringement and gives a free-kick to Wales in their own penalty area.

6 Another stern challenge on Dave Edwards in the Welsh midfield and he wins a free-kick. The restart is pumped aimlessly into the Russian box and easily dealt with.

6 Early sortie down the left from Konstantin Zyryanov for Russia as he takes on Chris Gunter. His cross is very tame and is easily collected by Hennessey.

5 Roman Pavylyuchenko gets an early feel for the ball in the Welsh half. He controls well and lays the ball off nicely.

3 Hefty early challenge on Gareth Bale and a free-kick is awarded.

3 Early touch for Wayne Hennessey in the Welsh goal and he clears long upfield.

1 Wales sporting a rather striking kit of yellow shirts and green shorts. Looks a bit like Norwich!

1 We are underway and the first free-kick of the match is given away by Sam Vokes deep in the Russian half.

Russia field both Andrei Arshavin and new Tottenham striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Sam Vokes' winner against Azerbaijan on Saturday wins him a place in the starting line-up for Wales. Boss John Toshack recalls Carl Robinson into midfield in place of the injured Jason Koumas.

The action is just moments away at a packed out Lokomotiv Stadium in Moscow and the national anthems are under way.

Russia have been the subject of a plunge with bookmakers before kick-off and Sky Bet currently go 1-4 on a home victory with the visitors on offer at 11-1. The draw is priced up at 9-2.
