Burley: Dutch test

Full Time90 The final whistle goes and Scotland are out of the running for World Cup 2010 as they slump to third in Group Nine with Norway beating Macedonia. Holland win the group with eight wins out of eight.

90 Naismith's shot from 20 yards out is well saved by Vorm and that is that for Scotland.

90 There will be three minutes of added time.

90 Free-kick to Holland on the edge of the box as McManus mistimes his challenge on Huntelaar.

88 Good sliding challenge by Naismith on Kuyt as the clock ticks down for Scotland.

87 O'Connor tries to catch Vorm out with a lob with the keeper out of his goal but the shot goes just wide.

86 Whittaker makes an excellent block to deny Van der Vaart what looks like a certain goal.

Substitution85 Klass-Jan Huntelaar comes on for Van Persie.

84 As it stands, Scotland will fall to third place in the group. They need a goal here to secure second spot at least. Holland are heading for eight wins from eight.

Substitution83 Garry O'Connor comes on for Maloney.

Goal82 GOAL - ELIA. It's all over for Scotland. They fail to deal with a long ball forward and Elia gets in to score. Weir makes a mess of his header allowing Elia to go through and take the ball past Marshall and fire Holland into the lead.

81 Good cross into the box by Maloney is met at the back post by Commons but the midfielder directs it well wide.

80 Van der Vaart's 25-yard drive is held by Marshall.

79 Weir gets across well to deny Van Der Wiel on the right as Scotland pour bodies forward.

Substitution77 Sneijder is replaced by Rafael Van Der Vaart.

76 Another chance for Scotland as Whittaker plays Maloney in on goal but Vorm is out of his goal well to deny the forward.

75 Fletcher's ball forward is too long for Miller. Naismith has gone through the middle now for Scotland, they are trying everything to find a goal.

74 Commons is playing through the middle alongside Miller with Naismith and Maloney remaining in the wide positions.

Substitution73 Robben makes way for Eljero Elia, a rising star of Dutch football.

72 Good possession again by Holland but Scotland get men behind the ball and defend well once again.

70 Another chance for Scotland and Miller. The striker's snapshot at goal is spilled by Vorm but the ball agonisingly squirms inches past the post.

68 Commons' first involvement sees him dispossessed by Van Bronckhorst.

Substitution67 Change for Scotland - Kris Commons comes on to replace Hartley. Scotland are going for it now, a holding midfielder off for an attacking one.

Yellow Card66 Robben cynically takes out Maloney in midfield and is given a yellow card.

65 The offside flag goes up against Miller.

64 it's all Holland at the moment. You wonder if George Burley will make a change to freshen things up.

63 Robben misses another glorious chance for Holland. he goes clean through on goal and cuts onto his right foot but Marshall stands tall and makes a superb stop to deny the forward from 10 yards out.

Yellow Card62 Kuyt is booked for diving in the box trying to win his side a penalty.

61 Thirty minutes to go for Scotland. Excellent performance so far but a draw is unlikely to be enough for them.

59 Kuyt misses an excellent chance for Holland. He gets away from Whittaker at a corner but sends he free header wide of the post. That really should have been 1-0 to the visitors.

58 Good defending by McManus to head the ball away with De Zeeuw looking like he has a free header at the back post.

57 Good turn by Miller and through ball but it's just too long for Naismith.

Yellow Card56 Darren Fletcher catches Nigel De Jong late and is shown a yellow card.

54 Whittaker's cross looking for Naismith is overhit and it's a goal-kick to Holland.

53 Good work by Miller on the right wins a throw for Scotland.

52 Fletcher looks to cross for Maloney but gets too much on it and the ball drifts out for a goal-kick.

51 Scotland are pressing the game well at the moment, not allowing the Dutch any time on the ball at all.

50 Ooijer fouls Miller on the Scotland left but for some reason the free-kick goes to Holland.

48 Naismith tracks back well to block Robben at the expense of a corner.

47 Brown's deep cross looking for Miller is gathered by Vorm.

46 The teams are back out and Scotland get the second half under way.

45 It's been an enthralling first half and Scotland will feel they should be ahead as they have been the better side so far. Brown missed a glorious chance early on before Miller's sitter. Naismith and Miller have also hit the woodwork for the Scots. Holland hit the post early on through Kuyt and Marshall had to deny Robben from inside the box. It's all there for Scotland in the second half.

Half Time45 The half-time whistle goes and it's still goalless at Hampden.

Yellow Card45 Hartley is booked for trying to stop Holland from taking a quick free-kick.

45 Van Bronckhorst's shot from 25 yards out is easily held by Marshall.

43 Whittaker has to head behind for a Holland corner.

41 Miller's glancing header inside the box floats well wide of goal.

40 Scotland won't get a better chance than that in this game. It wasn't quite of Iwelumo proportions but it wasn't too far off considering he was six yards out and with the goalkeeper on the ground.

38 Miller misses an absolute sitter for Scotland! Naismith's 25-yard drive is touched onto the post by Vorm but with the goal gaping and from just six yards out, he somehow hits the ball against Vorm. What a miss.

36 Decent chance for Van Persie but he volleys the ball over the bar from 12 yards out on the turn.

35 Brown goes down under pressure from Kuyt in midfield but no free-kick is given.

33 The ball is in the back of the net for Scotland but Naismith is flagged for offside - again though it looked the wrong call.

32 Giovanni Van Bronckhorst clatters Naismith from behind and Hartley has the chance to deliver a free-kick into the box.

31 Robben goes clean through on goal but the flag is up for offside - wrongly looking at the replay.

30 Scotland go so close again! Brilliant effort by Miller from a tight angle as his looping drive comes crashing off the crossbar and away to safety. Superb effort, so unlucky.

28 Meanwhile, Norway now lead Macedonia 2-0.

28 But the Dutch up the tempo in an instant as Robben makes a run into the channel and forces Marshall into another save with a left-footed drive from inside the box.

27 Good spell of possession by Holland but fortunately for Scotland it is mostly at the back and in midfield.

26 De Zeeuw lashes wide from 30 yards out.

25 Wesley Sneijder does well on the edge of the box and goes for goal with a curling effort which Marshall has to direct over the bar.

24 Van Persie is moving gingerly after being caught by Whittaker in midfield but he is quickly back into his stride.

22 Another half-chance for Scotland as Miller is set free in the box by Maloney but Joris Mathijsen makes an excellent sliding challenge and the ball deflects into the arms of Vorm.

21 After a slow start, Scotland have come more and more into the game and are giving as good as they get here.

20 Fletcher drives into the box but Vorm comes quickly out of his goal to deny the Scotland skipper.

20 Fletcher then goes in late on Van Persie and is lucky not to be booked considering what happened a few moments ago.

Yellow Card18 Yellow card for Van Persie for a late challenge on Darren Fletcher.

17 Maloney's corner is well held by Vorm.

16 Gregory Van der Wiel crashes into Maloney from behind and Scotland have a free-kick.

15 A long ball forward trundles through to Marshall in the home goal.

Yellow Card13 Naismith is caught offside on the right but thinks he is onside and is harshly booked for kicking the ball away.

12 Stephen McManus tries to pass the ball out of defence but gifts the ball to Arjen Robben who is then fouled 30 yards from goal on the left by Weir.

11 Real encouragement for Scotland, that was a clear-cut chance for Brown. But they are unlikely to get too many of them tonight, will they rue that miss?

10 What a chance for Scotland. Alan Hutton gets forward well on the right and his inch-perfect cross is met by Scott Brown unmarked ten yards out but he stabs the ball wide. That really should have been 1-0 to Scotland.

9 Eslewhere in Group Nine, Norway are 1-0 up at home to Macedonia as Holland launch the ball clear.

8 Demy De Zeeuw is fouled 30 yards from goal by Darren Fletcher but the free-kick comes to nothing.

7 First shot on goal for Scotland. Good play by Naismith finds Kenny Miller whose powerful shot from 25 yards out is deflected over the bar for a corner.

6 Steven Naismith rises well to win a high ball but it runs harmlessly through to Michel Vorm.

5 Steven Whittaker catches Robin van Persie in midfield as Holland looked to break quickly again, The visitors look really sharp.

4 So close to the opening goal for Holland as Dirk Kuyt picks up the ball on the edge of the box before lashing a right-footed drive off David Marshall's post. Worrying for Scotland already.

2 As expected, Holland are enjoying the early possession and they win a corner which is headed clear by David Weir.

1 Holland get the game under way at a packed and noisy Hampden Park.

Joe McGuigan doesn't sound too confident about Scotland's chances. He says: "As ever Scotland have got themselves into a position that belies there natural home grown talent and choice and as ever I think that they will come up short by the smallest of margins. Norway will beat Macedonia 2-0 and Scotland will lose out 2-1 to Holland with Holland scoring a disputed goal from a disputed corner in 5th minute of injury time.

I have been here before."

There is a slight chance Scotland could make a play-off place with a draw tonight but realistically they must win. It's given me a sore head trying to work out the different permuatations! But the dream one for Scotland is this - if they beat Holland, Northern Ireland fail to beat Slovakia and Poland draw with Slovenia, Scotland will secure a play-off place tonight.

Sky Bet Scotland are 7/2 to win this crucial game with the draw at 12/5 and Holland now odds on at 5/6. Sky Bet's Joe Petyt said: "All the money has been for Holland today, they've been cut to 5/6 from an opening price of 5/4. In the first goalscorer market Maloney (12/1) and Darren Fletcher (18/1) have been popular selections for the home side, Van Persie (6/1) and Sneijder (12/1) would also be bad results for us."

Holland's number one keeper Maarten Stekelenburg is ruled out with a finger injury and is replaced by Michel Vorm, who was earning his first competitive cap. Wesley Sneijder declared himself fit after suffering an ankle injury in Saturday's 3-0 friendly win over Japan.

Holland team: Vorm, Van Der Wiel, Ooijer, Mathijsen, Van Bronckhorst, De Zeeuw, Van Persie, De Jong, Kuyt, Sneijder, Robben.

Can Scotland do it? Let me know your thoughts at gareth.friel@bskyb.com.

Craig Gordon misses out for Scotland, a huge blow for George Burley, who is also without the inspirational James McFadden. Steven Whittaker and Steven Naismith both make their first starts in an attacking line-up while Paul Hartley has not started since defeat in Macedonia almost a year ago.

Scotland team - Marshall, Hutton, Whittaker, Weir, McManus, Brown, D Fletcher, Hartley, Naismith, Maloney, Miller.
